More Watchtower Begging And Dumbing-Down

the latest kingdom ministry (may) has a few changes.

first, it has an insert called "international kingdom hall building in some european lands" - designed to extract more $ from the friends.

the announcement section tells people how to write checks payable to "jehovah's witnesses" for donations - but...

One other brother made this joke about that elder: "One of these days he'll ask, 'what's your favorite food', and a person raise their hand and say 'hamburgers' and he'll say 'that's not what I'm looking for".

That is so true. How many times did a brother ask a question, someone answer it correctly and the brother conducting say, "True, but that's not what I'm looking for". After 3-4 "not what he was looking for" answers I just wanted to shout, "Why the hell don't you tell us what you're thinking and save us all this aggravation!".

Do You Consider Yourself An Honest Person?

many jw's can lie and feel that they are only using "theocratic stratergy".

some people are extremely above board and any thought of lying would not ever be considered.

some feel that they are very honest but would still cheat on taxes if they could get away with it.

I consider myself a basically honest person. I won't cheat on my spouse or lie to her. I don't normally plan on lying to anyone, but in some cases I will and feel no qualms about it. Depends on the situation and the person. I call it "personal strategy". If someone deserves the truth, they will get it. If they don't, they may or may not get it. I pay my taxes and bills and don't ever consider a way of getting out of them. I do break various driving laws. I used to get counseled on my driving while a dub. I always took it as a compliment because IMO witnesses are the worst drivers(as a group) but I digress. Honesty is more than just lying or not lying. It can come down to the way you think and treat others. It's a complex question with complex answers. But overall I think I'm an honest person.

What Television Show Was Your All-Time Favorite?

So many good ones and so many bad ones, LOL. Definately the Simpsons is an all time fav. I liked the first 3-4 seasons of MASH and after that it got too preachy. I loved WKRP in Cincinati back in the day. I have rediscovered Gilligans Island. Mr Howell is a hoot and Mary Ann is still sooo hot. Sopranos and Six Feet Under are fav dramas. Back in my youth I was hooked on Miami Vice. The old SNL show was great and as a kid I stayed up late to watch Monty Python's Flying Circus. The original Star Trek was a fav as a kid though I never got into the newer versions. I have started watching Sanford and Son reruns on TVLand. What a great show. I forgot how funny Redd Foxx was.

do you feel a memorial on a hwy is offense?

here in wisconsin, around 6months ago we had a terrible crash on one of our freeways because of fog and driveing to fast for conditions.there were many casualities, anyway many persons who loved ones died in that crash have memorials at the sight such as crosses ,flowers ,etc.well it seems the county were this happened wrote letters to all persons leaving memorials to stop ,their saying it is a road hazard and a distraction to drivers.well now we hear it is non religious people are complaining , saying it is offense to them to have to drive by these shrines.

i feel if they dont like it they should close their eyes.

If you put flowers/crosses/signs memorials at every accident that took a life on the nations roadways, you would have one big mess. I say clean up the roadways, put the flowers in the cemetary and get on with your life.

I was in a bar not too long ago when a single brother from my old congregation came in with a single sister. They sat down the bar aways when they saw me. They had both the expression on their faces of "there's that inactive brother from the hall. don't talk to him" and the "ohoh. another witness. hope he doesn't see us out together alone".

I have to admit, that upon my first seeing them, I thought, why are they alone? Don't they know they aren't following guidelines? Then I realized what I was doing. I was judging. I then told myself, it's not my business. They're adults they can do whatever. I see hundreds of couples come and go in this place and never thought one thing about it. In walks a couple of JWs who aren't married and immediately a flag is raised. I couldn't believe that I reacted the way that I did and was embarrassed at myself. Old habits are hard to break I guess.

this post is going to be somewhat disconnected, my apologies.... for the first time in a long while, i'm really mad at this organzition.

you know, i had lost a lot of my "bitterness" a few months ago when i started to absorb myself in other activities.

lately, i feel like i've had a "delayed reaction" of sorts when it comes to my association with the jws.

For the first time in a long while, I'm really mad at this organzition. You know, I had lost a lot of my "bitterness" a few months ago when I started to absorb myself in other activities. Lately, I feel like I've had a "delayed reaction" of sorts when it comes to my association with the JWs. It's a strange combination of anger, sadness, frustration and grief.

I have had this same thing happen. When you think you've moved on and left this mess behind, something comes up and brings all these emotions back.

As far as missing the association, that too I understand. No phone calls from the guys going to see a ballgame or play ball or golf. No calls from other couples asking us to go out to eat with them or come over to play cards or a game. It takes time but you can find new friends and associates. If you're an outgoing person, it will come a little easier than for someone who is quieter or shy. I have never been real outgoing and my best friends were people I grew up with in "the truth". Now I am meeting new friends through the job and by new hobbies. It just takes time. And there are still going to be times when something reminds you of the past and the good times from knowing so many people from the hall and it may make you reflect on where you are now. But when you think of the good times of the past don't forget to remember the reason why you left it behind.

Witness Cruises

another post on another thread about a witness cruise got me to thinking about when the dubs would block whole sections of cabins on cruise ships and have "witness cruises".

i never went on one myself, but i knew a few that did.

i heard some pretty sordid stories.

We went on several cruises, but they weren't called Witness cruises

No, they didn't really have a name nor were they ever sanctioned by any congregation or even the Society. It was like a grass roots movement. Started small and then it grew and grew each year. I remember seeing a flyer being passed around that gave the iteneraries, the prices, port charges, etc. It was kinda like a sign up sheet. A sister in our congregation got one, made copies and passed it out at the hall. Her husband was one of the elders that slid down in his chair at the MS school when the instructor condemned them.

LOL, I guess not too many of ya'll went on these then. The ones that I knew that always went were usually not the pioneer types. I'm sure there were some conservative, corn-cobb-up-the-butt types along, but the dubs that I knew that went were usually your more liberal, fun-loving, living-on-the-edge worldly types.

Another post on another thread about a witness cruise got me to thinking about when the dubs would block whole sections of cabins on cruise ships and have "witness cruises". I never went on one myself, but I knew a few that did. I heard some pretty sordid stories. Hated I missed all the fun.

I remember at a MS school onetime when the DO or the CO gave a stern warning about these cruises. He basically told all elder/MS's in attendance if they were planning on going on one, they better think better of it. I remember that some that I knew were planning on going on one and had to cancel. Lost their deposit and everything. Do any other ex-elders/servants remember being warned about this?

How many of you went on these and what was your experience like? I'd like to hear some experiences on these trips.
