i was watching pleasantville (tobey maguire, reese witherspoon) on tv last night.
as i watched i started thinking that although the movie isnt about religion, the way the characters and storyline evolved, reminded me of how it felt like to be in the "truth" and then to be in reality.. the movie is how two teens get stuck in a 50's tv show similar to the perfection of "leave it to beaver" everything is perfect in this town, but everyones in black and white becuase they are not in reality.
when the kids arrive they start to the show the people in the town art, books, love, sex and everything starts to turn into color.
I thought that they made the Amish look pretty good, but I heard that the Amish community was very upset with the way they were portrayed. How would they know?
Good question...one I wondered about too, but I'm sure they have their own clerics/pharisees/elders that monitor anything and everything so as to warn their flock/followers/suckers about not getting involved in anything that they decide is taboo...just like JWs.
I remember a movie that had Kevin Costner in it about an escaped convict who kidnapped a JW kid. The kid and convict become buddies in a way and the JW kid ends up trick or treating and dressing up as a ghost even when he knew it was wrong. I think(can't remember for sure) the movie was rated R. I remember some of the friends being all upset how the little boy was portrayed and condeming the movie and I wondered, "how do you know? Did you see it? and if you did, why? wasn't it rated R?"
for me it would be smoking, drinking, certain movies/tv shows and my favourite music (which includes eminem :p)

self-respect is what I would lose if I went back. It would probably just break my spirit if I went back.
But, for argument's sake the physical things to give up to go back would be numerous. Drinking, R-rated movies, clubs, concerts, worldly friends, music, the list goes on.
I know that a JW would say "you can still do some of those things", but it was my experience when still in that even if it didn't bother your conscience to do, see, say something, it bothered somebody elses, therefore we still shouldn't do it so as to not stumble someone.
Our conscience didn't really matter, it was the collective conscience that mattered and since the collective conscience was ultra-conservative, based on the teachings from the leaders, most everything "worldly" was ruled out.
Yea, lots of us sneaked around and did things that we hoped nobody found out about, but if you want to be a truly dedicated JW, you have to, have to, give up anything that the collective would frown on.

It's not really a made up word, but the meaning of the word is totally changed from what normal people think:
"Publisher"
When non-JWs hear the word "publisher" they think of someone who prints books, magazines or newspapers. When JWs use the word they think of other Jehovah's Witnesses. A buzzword to always remind us that we were more than just believers, but that we were all expected to give our time and effort in trying to gain new converts.
edited to add a real made up word that I remember: backcall before return visits(which qualifies by itself) we called them backcalls.
brobennett, you made this comment in another post:.
breeding pedophiles are more common in other religions since they are kept in circulation and not taken out of the religion.
by the way, brobennett, do you have kids?.
There ya go BB....ask questions. Think for yourself.

Well thats what the Bible says:"Certainly if anyone does not provide for those who are his own, and especially for those who are members of his household, he has disowned the faith and is worse than a person without faith."?1 Tim. 5:8.
Name one case where reading the Watchtower, Awake or the Bible and waiting on God or Jesus has prevented a single case of child abuse or brought a child abuser to justice, theocratic or otherwise?
I know some people still believe in Christianity and/or religion of various types and I don't mean to criticize beliefs, but if you sit around waiting on God to take care of things, you are going to be disappointed. He ain't gonna come down and smite the wrongdoers.
I'm not a christian, I don't believe in the Bible as holy...so quoting scriptures doesn't mean squat to me. Give me something tangible that I can work with. WTS writings and ancient manuscripts with no relevance to the subject matter ain't gonna cut it.
did you like them?
hate them?
fear them?
Methinks you're repeating yourself, min ole buddy. That or somebody else asked a similar question....but, I'll bite anyway, again
As a kid I feared them. Elders were more like policemen way back in the day. As I got older there were some I still avoided, I guess you could call it fear, but so as not to have to deal with their overzealousness and being sticklers for rules. Others became friends and I think they really want to be a good elder. Others were just going through the motions. Didn't care much one way or the other for em. Still a few others were just plain jerks and assholes and I wouldn't piss on em if they were on fire.

Witness was a good movie...while not as identifiable with JWs as the ones already mentioned, it does make you stop and think a little.
I thought that they made the Amish look pretty good, but I heard that the Amish community was very upset with the way they were portrayed. I guess it's kind of like JWs being upset at how they are portrayed by the media. They don't really get it, that's how everybody outside their commmunity sees them.
sidenote: my fav scene in Witness was when the redneck was picking on the Amish guy and Book gets mad and starts to get out and do something about it and old Eli says, "It's not our way" Book says, "but it's mine" and goes and kick's the guys ass. I always felt guilty for liking that scene when I was a JW because if we were in that situation, we would have to just sit there and have ice cream smeared on our face too instead of doing something. It was a secret pleasure watching Book smash that guys face, wishing I could be more like him instead of being docile and pacifistic.

If a family leader abused or did not act upon the security of his child then he would have to answer to Jesus Christ.
Yea, like I'm gonna rely on some mythalogical, invisible, storybook character to punish the abuser of my children.
No thanks, I'll take care of it myself.

I agree with full disclosure of pedophiles in the area and I am sure there are updated sites people can go to to view criminals in the area?
Would you agree that disclosure of pedophiles/abusers in the congregation should be made to the members of the congregation so that they can take steps to protect their families? If you do, that goes against the direction from the F&DS who do not allow elders to make public those that have been disciplined for these type offenses.
The right way to deal with the matter would be going to the authorities like I have written down to stop the crime in its tracks and then the criminal can be reported and dealt with in a timely matter.
So you agree that if I as a parent discover this crime has happened to my child I should immediately contact the authorities? Doesn't this go against the counsel from the WTS that the friends go to the elders to handle matters within the congregation and not involve worldly authorities if at all possible?
You may not realize this yet, my brother, but you are on the way out. First you are associating with known apostates. That alone is a DFing offense. At first you only quoted/cut & paste what the WTS printed. But as this thread has developed you are speaking your own thoughts. Thoughts that in small ways does not agree with the official position of the WTS. This is how it starts. Sooner or later, something will snap into place in your brain and you will figure out that the WTS and JWs are not God's spirit directed earthly organization.
Welcome ex-brother Bennett.
