here is something that has been on my mind.

i would like to know what others think.. the watchtower teaches that jehovah keeps a memory of us, so if we are to be.

resurrected, he can re-create us.

Here is something that has been on my mind. I would like to know what others think.

The Watchtower teaches that Jehovah keeps a memory of us, so if we are to be
resurrected, he can re-create us. The Watchtower has given the analogy of motion
pictures capturing an image of a person and then replaying it.

Thus, Jehovah, with his perfect memory could re-create us.

There is a problem with this. Motion pictures capture an "image" of a person, a
representation, which is used to create a "likeness" of the person. This representation
is quite separate from the actual person.

Even if a perfect representation of us was kept in his memory, what would be the
case if Jehovah decided to re-create TWO copies of us? It would be possible for him to do so.

Which one of the two would be the original person?

Or, consider this, Jehovah could create an exact duplicate of you right now, who would be
YOU?

Something for people to think about.

Thanks for sharing this interesting post.

Many witnesses say that reading the Awake gives one the equivalent
of a college education.

This is just plain wrong. I'd like to ask each and every one of them upon
what are they basing their statement?

What articles has the Awake or Watchtower published concerning algebra,
trigonometry, calculus or vector analysis? What about physics? Mechanics?
Electromagnetism? These are just a few examples of what does NOT appear
in their magazines.

What about writing courses? Reading the Awake will train one in writing essays?
What about critical thinking? Or would that be too close to "independent thinking"?

People make tremendously stupid statements based upon nothing.
Maybe this is what the Awake and Watchtower really teaches them to do!

Who paid for Beth-Sarim?

i had asked this question in the chatroom, "who contributed the funds for rutherford's.

I had asked this question in the chatroom, "Who contributed the funds for Rutherford's
San Diego house known as Beth-Sarim?"
(I also asked this question in Maximus' thread, "Need Assistance re Judge R")

Van Amberg, who was the WT Treasurer at the time, said "None of the Watchtower
funds were used".

I have stood in front of the house, and it is VERY large! Most of the original 100 acres of
land surrounding it has been sold for housing development, and the house does seem
out of place among the neighboring homes.

One neighbor, who had been inside the house, told me that it had large rooms, and that
the house had been there "forever"!.

Well, it has almost! It was built in 1929, a well-known architect designed it (His name
is given in the book "Witnesses of Jehovah")

In a newspaper article, Rutherford said the landscaping was done with special trees so
that the Ancient worthies,when they return, would feel at home.

So lets see here,

* 100 acres of land bought,
* a well known architect to design the house,
* a large house constructed on the land,
* special landscaping.

Also, there was a staff to run the house and care for the grounds.

It seems hard to believe all of the above came from a "Direct Contribution", and that
"No WT Funds" were used.

Obviously, WT funds WERE used in the upkeep of the house and land.

So, does anyone know where did the funds come from?

P.S. There is a tax problem as well. If an contribution is made to a
tax-exempt organization, and the funds are used to benefit an specific individual
(here it would be Rutherford of course), then it appears that some sort of tax dodge
has taken place. It would be interesting if anyone who knows about tax law would
comment about this aspect.

(Fictional Headlines: "JUDGE RUTHERFORD CHARGED WITH TAX FRAUD",
but it wouldn't stick, Hayden Covington would have gotten him off! )

Need Assistance re Judge R

just received a telephone call from a non-jw close friend who does not post on the board.

for some time he has been writing a very detailed biography of judge rutherford that will be meticulously documented.

he's spent many weeks visiting the judge's roots in missouri and elsewhere, with very informative results.

book published in Australia a few years ago about a person's experience growing up as
a Jehovah's Witness. The book was said to have been quite well known, a best seller.
But it is now out of print. Does anyone know what the title of this book might be?

Convention Summary

as promised, here are my observations from the three convention days here in hamilton, ontario.

i hadnt expected to say much since many like lostmyreligion and bibleexaminer had already discussed it a lot.

actually i have quite a few things to say, hopeful meaningful things.. a few general observations: .

I have a question about the announcement made about food:

"Last year, some brothers and sisters were observed leaving the convention grounds at lunch
to purchase food from vendors or other establishments. This has the potential to jeopardize the
simplified food arrangement and the relaxed atmosphere inside the convention grounds."

What "simplifed food arrangement"? I thought everyone had to bring their own food to the
conventions now. Or do they allow the convention center's commercial food venders to
sell food now? If so, jeopardizing the "simplified food arrangement" by JWs buying food elsewhere
would mean the organizers would have less bargaining clout next time they negotiate for
the convention facilities. (YEAH! Somebody tell me the nearest McDonald's is!)

Also "Relaxed atmosphere"? All I remember from the last convention I attended in San Diego was
all the solemn faces!!!

Good article Maximus.

I do not know if Bruce Metzger wrote the Watchtower, but the noted Greek scholar Dr. Julius R. Mantey did.

Dr. Mantey, along with H.E. Dana, had written the book, "A Manual Grammar of the Greek New Testament", which the Watchtower Society had been using in order to justify the correctness of their Greek translations of key Bible scriptures.

Dr Mantey objected to the WT misquoting him, and wrote a letter to the Watchtower, dated July 11, 1974. Towards the end of the letter he wrote:

"In view of the preceding facts, especially because you have been quoting me out of context I here with request you not to quote the Manual Grammar of the Greek New Testament again, which you have been doing for 24 years. "

I do not know if Dr Mantey ever received a reply to his letter, but I believe an edict must have been issued in Brooklyn not to use Dr Mantey's name in any WT publication.

For instance, in the March 22, 1987 issue of the Awake! magazine, Nicholas Kip told his story about "How Knowing Greek Led Me to Know God" In a footnote to this article, the Grammar Manual is given as a reference, but only the author Dana is listed!!
