Watchtower "Newspeak" Self Defeating

it is likely that many of us consulted orwell's "1984".. in that book, one important component of big brother's rule is the.

use of "newspeak".

"canned response" is correct.

Bring up almost any topic - and it's predictable what the response is going to be, even on non-biblical subjects. Particularily this is true among the less educated.

I have a 20 year old jw working for me. He cannot defend his beliefs further than 2 layers of objections - he just gives up and says he believe the Bible. Like he knows it.

We used to get so frustrated with people like that at the door. "I was born a Baptist, and I'll die a Baptist." We used to leave and chuckle "You sure will."

Well, we were jw's...............

How Much Time did it Take for You?

while having a wonderful visit with my way-cool sister, waiting, her hubby, her and i were discussing the number of hours per week it took to be a jw.. here's a breakdown of the time i spent per week:.

5 meetings a week = 5 hours.

getting dressed and travel time = 5 hours.

I believe the proper wording would be she and I........

Lord!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe it! I actually caught my "very word proper sister in a minute error! I did it! I did it! And I'm not backing down on this one.

Other than that........a couple of other hour/day/week jw spenders were the Circuit Assemblies, District Conventions, and One-Day Assemblies just thrown in to confuse everyone.

Some of us had to work extra hours to make extra to spend our vacation time sitting/dozing/murmuring for days on end.

"The good old days" back when - those poor jw's had to sit for 8 long days, and evenings, no air conditioning, living in tents, for the priveledge of "spiritual food at the proper time by the Faithful and Discreet Slave - a sumptuous banquet of well-oiled foods."

I loooooooove sleeping in on Sundays.

Oh! And studying with our family. 1.0 hour weekly minimum.

Also.....for the elder above......time preparing for parts, elder meetings, "backroom visits", and a host of other stuff, eh? Hour upon hour upon hour upon hour.

I'm Screwed Up, You're Screwed Up

i have not followed very many threads of late, so if someone has already made the same observations i'm about to make, i apologize for my redundancy.. .

i admit it: i'm part of a highly secretive, highly elite group.

(we have to drink two quarts of fresh yak blood and get a tattoo of a pentagram on our butts as part of of the initiation.

When I first came to this board,I was impressed with the debates.Many intellegent and well-spoken posters made it very interesting and educational.But,either it's gotten worse in the short time I've been here,or I just didn't see it in the beginning.

I think the intelligent, well-speaking, interesting, educational people are still here, along with the others like me. I know that some posters have just gone away, for a variety of reasons.

But different issues bring out different emotions. Some are tied to male/female, money, jw background, sex - and we now have the freedom to say what we want - any way we want. Some of us take our freedom of words to an extreme.

But for what it's worth - this is an exceptional place at times. At other times, guess it's just human.

I also agree with Farkel for the most part, and posted as such with Happy Heathen. Glad you brought back the thread to it's intended subject - giving room for allowances to others, particularily with our screwy jw background.

Michael Jackson still a JW!

last night on one of the entertainment magazines shows they said that michael jackson just gave an interview to tv guide.

in it he says he is still a jw and still goes door to door in disguise.

i had heard a rumour recently that he still donated a lot of money to the society but had no clue he still claimed to be one.

Prince, a Michael Jackson copy-cat recently became a JW, and has changed some of his lyrics and songs to be more proactive toward the Paradise Earth belief. - Amazing

He now sings rock songs about God's killing 99.9% of the people on the earth - therefore making a Paradise Earth for Jehovah's Witnesses and mentally unstable (at least until the resurrection)?

Betcha that little diddy will make him a bundle!

It is called Beloved.net. Of course I haven't been on there for over a year.

Of course? That just made me smile. I know people that ***perhaps*** would have zoomed back in within a couple of months!

Glad it worked out so well for you and your husband. Rather like my husband and I. We met at business seminar, went back home, talked on the phone for two weeks, met at another business seminar then, and got married on the way home. We actually "dated" for a week.

It's been 20 years and none regretted, - well, occasionally. However, and a big one at that, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I told my daughter I'd slap her upside the head if she tried a cheap trick like her mother pulled.

It could have turned out terrible - and only a couple of days later did that fact occur to me. Slow on everything but walking down the tacky isle in a Los Vegas Love Chapel at 11:30 pm on Christmas Eve. The only sober people there.

Good luck and stupidity run hand in hand sometimes - as in my case.

WERE JW'S REALLY INVOLVED @GROUND ZERO?

my currently devout jw sis told me how "proud" she was of the bro's at the wtc and how they fed , and comforted all those ppl...this told at the meetings i suppose.

or was this just spin?

i think i read (was it here) that the doors of hq got locked up so outsiders could not come in..... did they really get involved" or was it enuff to make them look good?.

If you've never had the "spiritual shepherding" of your Book Study conductor asking you to "step aside" after the meeting to chat about your Field Service Report time reported (being low).......well, you've missed a common occurrence in our neck of the woods.

Then the publisher get the priveledge of explaining his own private life to justify what is being perceived as "token service." Try to explain that "No, I don't think I'm 'spiritually weak'. My conscience allowed me to take my family to the park twice this month on Saturday morning to watch softball."

Elder: "Well, brother, even though your conscience allowed it, doesn't necessarily mean that your conscience is bible trained and spiritually healthy, now does it?"

So................if brothers/sisters/children can be pulled aside to be asked why their field service hours are not up to the standards of whatever country we live in (10 hrs a month in usa last I heard).........the WTBTS can be asked publicly exactly what they did in their Field Service Report in an extreme emergency situation.

Besides, when they've put out Awake! magazine articles on helping in war/disasters in foreign countries -- they put in how many TONS of food, supplies, clothing given to our brothers -- and "our brothers" only.

And again besides, you're the one who said one of your elders worked in WTBTS warehouse - he should know quantities, don't you think? ]

My daughter, from 7 to 9 months during pregnancy, had the hiccups every night about 8 pm. And..........she's still a hiccup. That woman has more energy than I ever dreamed of having. Of course, she's 31, never had any children - could explain the excess of energy, eh?

Since one of your elders works in warehouse (presumably the WTBTS warehouse), EXACTLY what gross quantity of the above items (including batteries) did they supply freely? What is "hardware"? What is "etc."? How many vehicles were chauffered for the firemen and for how long?

And what does this mean?

And WHY hasn't the WTBTS come publicly forward and donated money? Afterall, we were taught to ask for donations door-to-door for their work. Why couldn't they help others with the necessities - including their money? It's one of the things the victims, families, and city needs immediately and long term.

And since your elder is in the WT spin arena, how do you know if he's spinnin' you or not?

I think everyone understands that you're trying to be a loyal friend to Farkel, but I honestly don't think you're helping matters any. What started out as a nice thread has turned into a typical JW.com mud-fest. (I shouldn't complain; it's these rows that have given me substance on this earthly plane.) It's pretty obvious to anyone not directly involved in this argument, that neither you nor teejay is ever going to back down. That being the case, why ruin your friend's thread? If you feel you must win the argument (which neither of you will ever do--trust the Voice of Reason on this) why not take it to the adult/disagreement forum?
