there seems to be a lot of discussion these days about iraq, even on this site, which i think can be handled in one easy illustration.. if your family was mugged, and the mugger without question is going to shoot and kill them, but you have the opportunity to shoot and kill the mugger first, would you not do it?
no time to discuss the consequences with the mugger, cannot discuss with said mugger on how he would "feel" if you shot him, no time for anything.
if you do not react, he will kill your family without question, without hesitation.
Without revealing my opinion on the issues at this time, I do find the terms, "very simple" and "without question" to invalidate your analogy.
If the situation in Iraq were "very simple" and there were "no questions", why would people be so divided about it?

I held back getting involved in the board wars. I can be compassionate. I had a disappointing February. (For the love of God, people, I couldn't even see the groundhog, let alone the shadow!!) anyone remember the one where kirk got mixed up in the transporter and spit into two people?
one kirk was mean and violent and nasty and tried to feel up yoman rand and swore a lot and attacked people for no good reason.
the other kirk was sweet and nice and he seemed better, but he was kind of a woosie and couldn't make a decision or do anything meaningful except talk about denuvian slime bread toppings and he couldn't even get a bulge in the spandex for yoman rand, but at least he was polite.. gosh, i don't know what made me think of this episode.. night all,.

Tracy: we're staying at various places. I got wise to the fact that packing up your crap and changing hotels is a great way to save dollars. The first night, we're staying off-strip. After that, we have a choice of several good properties- Paris, Aladdin, Rio- all under $50 per night. Sunday and Monday are really cheap this time of year.

I guess I was thinking about the ending, where both the good and the evil Kirk had to get back together to survive. Interestingly, Good Kirk understood how he needed his other side, while Evil Kirk would only rant and lash out and even Spock couldn't reason with him. (Spock looked a little bit like seven006.) Evil Kirk had to be locked up to keep him from hurting himself or other people, but this only made him madder.
(The little known fact is, recently they found some archived footage which was edited out of that episode. Yoman Rand decides even though Evil Kirk is kind of attractive in a dangerous way, she realizes she doesn't like either exreme and ends up sneaking off to Ohura's quarters. That went way beyond what the conservative censors would allow back then. I kind of think it would have been interesting.)
TeeJay may be right. The Roddenberry moral lessons are too simple to be relavant today.
Glad to know there are still fans out there.
