Any (original) Star Trek Fans?

anyone remember the one where kirk got mixed up in the transporter and spit into two people?

one kirk was mean and violent and nasty and tried to feel up yoman rand and swore a lot and attacked people for no good reason.

the other kirk was sweet and nice and he seemed better, but he was kind of a woosie and couldn't make a decision or do anything meaningful except talk about denuvian slime bread toppings and he couldn't even get a bulge in the spandex for yoman rand, but at least he was polite.. gosh, i don't know what made me think of this episode.. night all,.

Are You Influenced By Looks?

on friday night i watched a report by abc tv's john stossel (in the normal 20/20 time slot) that dealt with how humans are influenced by looks.

it was a re-broadcast, and even though this was the second time i've seen it it was still fascinating.

to demonstrate whether we are influenced by appearance, several scenarios were set up, involving people considered attractive and those considered more 'plain'.

Interesting so far, and I must agree with something COMF said: highly attractive people often do become used to having things their way without much effort. They are far more likely not to have developed interesting personalities, in my experience at least.

However, something yet to be discussed so far is the dynamic of the internet on such perception. So many of us now get to know people first from written communication, sometimes followed by voice only, only later to meet in person. By the time we actually DO meet, our opinion of the other person is well-established and our physical observation is tainted.

Has the internet affected how we "see" people? How many of you have formed relationships with people through the internet you would not otherwise have given a second glance to if you passed on the street??

I'm guessing there are many juicy stories out there.

Joanna: Dale Chihuly lives in my neck of the woods. Recently, he opened a new glass art museum in Tacoma. The Seattle Symphony Hall has two major Chilhuly art sculpures hanging on either end of the grand entry - amazing works, both of them. You have to see them to believe. Try Benaroyal Hall web site for a look (or Seattlesymphony.org).

I've yet to visit the new glass museum, although it's getting rave reviews. I just need someone to go with me. Any takers??

How hot is it?

my cousin max, who lives in pennsylvania sent me this today.

he says it would be funny, if it wasn't true.. i t i s s o h o t t h a t .

.. the birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground.. the trees are whistling for the dogs.. the best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.. hot water now comes out of both taps.. you can make sun tea instantly.. you learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.. the temperature drops below 95 and you feel a little chilly.. you discover that in july it only takes 2 fingers to steer your car.. you discover that you can get sunburned through your car window.. you actually burn your hand opening the car door.. you break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 a.m.. your biggest bicycle wreck fear is, "what if i get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and i cook to death?".

Ain't life great, Mulan? My daughter came over this afternoon and we drank sun-tea on the front porch. Sunny, with a cool breeze, just perfect.

No matter how hot it gets (and that 91 degree day was up there) it always cools off at night. Could be that's why it costs so bloody much to live here??

Do jws really covet other peoples' homes and consider that they should be rightfully theirs?

Not all, but enough that it has become a well-known cliche.

#1 with a qualifier: talking to some people at the doors. I really enjoyed talking to people who would actually ask questions and converse. I learned how to think on the fly, a skill that has helped me greatly in my post door-to-door life.

I'm back ... now READ THIS

we've just got back from out holidays after travelling with 2 young kids for 24+ hours and logged on to see the same old people complaining about the same old things with the same worn out arguments.. the topics seem to be along the lines of:posters should be allowed to say anything they want.we want absolute free speech and seem to be under the mistaken illusion that the usa has it.there is mass moderation happening on this forum and censorship is rife.

... and so on.. all of these claims are utter crap as far as i am concerned.. now, i am not going to put up with people trying to stir things up and interfere with the majority of posters who want to use this forum properly and see me and moderation as the main topic of conversation.. keep harping on and you will be deleted.

IMPORTANT - JWD Closing Down

the discussion board and chat located at jehovahs-witness.com will be shut down permanently as of midnight (gmt), sunday august 18, 2002. .

this is primarily due to the recently added stress on simon and his family as a result of the moderator issue.

he simply does not want to see his hard work come to naught and is shutting down while still at the peak of it's success.

Kismet: while I understand your frustration, I do give Simon much more credit for strength than you seem to. I doubt very much that Simon takes this board as seriously as some here seem to.

I do agree that the issue of moderation has been blown waaaay out of proportion, but it seems to be three or four very vocal complainers starting, or replying to, several different threads. Other issues are being pushed onto pages 3 or 4. From my experience on various boards, these complainers have a short attention span and will either run out of steam, or leave in a huff only to return again later.

When you think about it, aren't you (and I for that matter) playing into perpetuating the problem? Maybe we should all turn off our PC's and go for a walk or something.

i see the same thing happening here that happened on another site a couple of years ago.

all of this complaing about moderation.

i just can't believe it.. think of it this way.

Good, so we are not as far off as I thought. You would consider asking them to modify their behavior for the benefit of other guests (even if you, yourself were not bothered by it), do I take your meaning correctly?

I don't think Simon, or those acting in his behalf, have demanded anyone "do their bidding or get the F out." What they HAVE done is request people behave in a respectful manner towards each other, keeping in mind the needs of the more sensitive among us.

It seems to me, TH, this all got under your skin because someone deleted a picture you posted. I didn't see it so I can't really make a judgement on its merits, or lack thereof.

I do think there is a good reason for not enumerating a bunch of "rules" which themselves would become subject to interpretation and debate. There are nine Supreme Court Justices who do nothing but sit around and interpret the Constitution. Keeps these old guys on the gravy-train for life.
