I was there through the whole thing and I certainly disagree with Amicus, larc and others. 99%+ of the Witnesses I knew, and from what I can tell most Witnesses, did not make any changes whatsoever in their lives because of the 1975 stuff. Yes, some sold their houses to pioneer, some passed on medical treatment, and indeed some did run up debt on the assumption they wouldn't have to pay for it, but, the vast majority did not do those things. Education is in my opinion a separate issue and not particularly linked to 1975. The people that really jumped on the 1975 business desperately wanted it to happen then for all kinds of reasons, a lot of them were "escaping." They were not wise or judicious, but no one forced them to do what they did. It's their responsibility, just like the nut cases down at the corner store buying lottery tickets a hundred bucks at a time. Just like someone that's a smoker is responsible for their actions. I get so sick of this lack of personal responsibility, everything is always someone else's fault. It makes me gag. I think I'll go down to McDonalds and see if I can't spill some hot coffee in my lap.

ianao it's simple truth that we all live our lives as we see fit. Others may influence us but unless they've got a gun to our heads then that's the way it is. Some may be more weak willed than others but even if we give up our decision making capabilities to others that is something we choose to do.

Most Witnesses take things from the Society with a grain of salt, they just don't like to admit it.

It wouldn't bother me a bit to say something like "live our lives as WE see fit." I've done it before.

i have been reading all of your postings for a couple of days now.

i find this site to be very interesting and helpful (not to mention all of the people seem to be very intelligent, nice, and innately good).

therefore, i decided to join in.

Just to weigh in with Frenchy and Kismet. I have personally attended both funerals and wedding in churches, including Catholic churches, and no one said a thing. Some Witnesses have a particularly weak conscious and they limit themselves unnecessarily.

Skorpion, yeah they said all that stuff before 1975 I was there as well. But, I didn't live my life on the basis of what they were saying and neither did most other Witnesses. Some were critical, so what? So I got education, home, kids, life, etc. There has to be a certain amount of personal responsibility in this stuff rather than trying to lay the blame off on the Organization. Yes, they do have a certain responsibility but in the end we live our lives as we see fit it's too easy to go slopey shouldered.

we would both like to know, however, if it is biblical to shun the disfellowshipped/disassociated?

where in the bible does the society base the practice of shunning or groveling back for a long period of time if a person is sorry and wants to return to the church?

If it were just the Wt view on this matter then there might be some point to disagreeing with what seems to be pretty clear in the scriptures, however, it's not just the Wt. Every reputable authority that I know of holds pretty similar views, enough certainly to establish the basic principles. Some clearly do not want to accept that, so be it. I think we've beaten this one about to death so lets move on.

If Jesus instructions were so squishy as to be meaningless, why did he use those particular expressions? Why not say, throw them out of the congregation and then treat them as you wish?

waiting you're terminology is rather perjorative. Clearly Jesus was saying that unrepentant, continuing sinners should be expelled from the congregation and that contact should restricted to only that which was absolutely necessary. Racism, bigotry and hatred don't enter into it, it's a matter of actions not attitudes.

waiting, you're missing the point. Consider his audience, what did his statement mean to them? If the way they treated tax collectors had no particular meaning then there would have been no point to using that particular expression. Beacon's comment is disingenuous and frankly self-serving. I suggest you read someone like Edersheim on how Jews treated tax collectors, harlots and pagans (people of the nations.)

In Matthew 18 when Jesus addressed his Jewish audience and said treat them like Gentiles and tax collectors that would have been very clear to his listeners. They were very familiar with first century practice in dealing with those groups. Essentially that meant they didn't have anything to do with them. You might not like it, but that's the way it was.

I believe there is much wrong with the judicial process but clearly there is a scriptural basis for putting people out of the congregation is they continue a sinful course. Once they are out, then Jesus set the standard for how they should be treated. You might check a few commentaries and see what they say. You'll find pretty general agreeement.

Platlets...can WTBTS policy be defended?

if this topic has been addressed already...sorry...just ignore it.... if not...i would like to hear from those who would defend this policy....or who see the inconsistencies in the views on blood but the wtbts.. .

there is no question that the watchtower's blood policy needlessly kills jw children.

Just got a chance to read a couple of questions addressed to me. I'll have to dig the details out of my notes but I essentially remember that the point I mentioned was made by a Doctor giving a lecture at a medical conference in some major eastern city, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, something like that. He was the director of a transfusionless medical program in Portland, Oregon I believe. He was speaking specifically about surgical patients. I've got the names somewhere if I can just find them. The information was not in the Watchtower and I did confirm from another source that I heard what I thought I heard. Sorry I didn't get back on this sooner.
