  UK Gun Laws: Possession = 5 Years Imprisonment.

  following the deaths by shooting of 2 teenage girls last week, the uk government is speeding through even tighter gun controls than ever before.. already, high court judges have been told to impose a minimum 5 year jail sentence to anyone found in possesssion of a hand-gun in a public place.

  also, consideration is being given to outlawing replica firearms as well as air powered weapons.

  much is being made of the violent lyrics sometimes contained in rap - music which appears to often endorse gun culture.. see:http://news.bbc.co.uk/ for full story.. englishman..

  I still say, lets enforce the laws we already have as oppossed to making new laws. Just to stir the pot a bit though. People who own guns are twice as likely to die from a gunshot than those who don't. Now, ya gotta figure that suicides are quickly figured into this, as are all gang shottings etc. Still, depending on what area of the country I live in, I will keep a gun in the house, though I don't at this time.

  You're point about arrests for carrying guns. The law in the US provides for punishment of those carrying weapons who don't have a concealed weapons license. Enforce that law, and make it stricter.

  To whomever asked...most of the gun laws in the US are state and local, though the feds have a number of gun laws too, mostly dealing with transfer of weapons etc.

  i just found out my boyfriend has to go on a business trip to washington to talk with some of the "big wigs" at microsoft .

  he will be taking over a project and so they have to share info and whatever else they do in those meetings.

  i hate it when he goes out of town!!

  Yuck, that's so sweet it almost gags me. Why can't you have a jacked up domestic life like the rest of us dysfunctionals. No, actually, I think it's cool you guys are like that.   Let Dr Yeru Pipe in too. Don't ban handguns, rather, enforce the laws already on the books to the fullest extent. Make it a MANDATORY 20 years with no parole for the commision of ANY crime with a gun, loaded or not, real or not. Make it LIFE without parole if the firearm is discharged during the commission of the crime.

  Same same on police chases. If they made it a mandatory 10 years in prison for running from the cops (vehicular) some of these punks who are being stopped for tickets who just want to mess around and lead the cops in a chase might think twice. OJ would have gotten at least some jail time for his crimes then. Sad fact is, most first time offenders don't see any prison time for first time offenses when running from the cops.

  The whole "proving Satan a liar" or "Proving God has the right to rule over us" or proving man can't govern himself" are distinctly Society doctrines that most Christians dismiss. WHY evil is allowed to exist goes back to the free will issue we've discussed so often here.

  Why bad things happen to good people remains a mystery. We can't understand it. Most people hate that answer, but in the end, it's the only true answer. Only God knows.

  alcoholics/non-alcoholics and AA

  i realise this question is off-topic for this forum but i believe this forum moved away from it's original intent long ago, and is now just a social place to talk to others with a similar background.

  i've got a friend who has recently begun going to aa meetings.

  she tells me that an 'alcoholics' body breaks down alcohol differently from a non-alcoholic and the difference in metabolism is what differentiates between an alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

  Here's how I understand the issue of Alcoholism. When SOME alcoholics metabolize alcohol a different process takes place than in the average person. In all people, when alcohol is broken down the very first thing it does is become a toxin (thus alcohol poisoning, hang-overs, etc). The body then immediately breaks this toxin down into non-toxic components. With SOME alcoholics the next step is that this toxin combines with the dopamine produced in the brain creating something called THIQ. I'm not really sure what this is except that it's the same chemical produced by taking heroin. It's the addictive quality of heroin. Thus, for SOME alcoholics it's a true physical addiction the same as heroin is addictive.

  This was stumbled upon when doctors started getting the bodies of "bums" to study. It was noticed that none of the "bums" were heroin addicts, yet had the same chemical by product as a heroin addict.

  I say SOME alcoholics because this can only be discovered by cutting open the brain. I trully believe that some are psychologically addicted as opposed to physically. I fully convinced that no amount of "will power" can help a true alcoholic stop drinking. An enormous amount of "want power" is necessary though.

  AA has the best recovery rate of any program or treatment out there, and the rate for AA is low, only somewhere around 30 percent at best. True, some become addicted to meetings, but that is a healthier addiction than the alcohol itself.

  Personally, I haven't been to a meeting in about four years, (sober for 9 years as of 14 Nov).
