And the government has very good reason to believe that is the case with these people on the Tampa. They are not refugees, they are illegal queue jumpers.

All i can say to that Prisca is...Prove it. How can you possibly know this. How can you know their individual cases just like that. You know there is a pregnant woman on board...seems like a pretty desperate thing for a supposed well do to woman with lots of moolah to do. If they are coming from Afghanistan, then more than likely they can claim asylum, if you know whats going on Afghanistan...you know, THE TALIBAN. I bet you if it wasn't the Taliban running things in Afghan, but instead the WT, who had decided created heaven on earth in their own little asian plot, most ozzies here would say "sure let them in"
What about if they are Iraqi. We are responible for the sanctions imposed on that Nation. They barely have any basic medical supplies over there. Hospitals use Asprin cause they cant get morphine...you know. How many kids are dieing over there because of our sanctions. So when they flee and come here, we are supposed to tell them to piss off. Thats pretty heartless.

We asked the Tampa to help us, to pick up the boat people.

He did it. Good on him.

Then he needs our help, we tell him to piss off. Well give yourself a medal John Howard.

BTW, those $$$ you think they have most likely took every last goat they owned + their shirt off their back to get.

So what happens now. What if Indonesia doesn't take them? Do we tell the Tampa to take them to Norway. Sheesh! What happens next time we spot a bunch of boat people off our shores, do we just assume they are queue jumpers and tell them to turn round?.

Facts are, that this isn't the first group of illegal boatpeople trying to get into Australia.

So when does a Refugee or Asylum seeker become 'legal' Prisca. When they walk down the only road in Afghanistan and apply at the local Embassy.
Refugees flee trouble...they dont stick around and fill out papers.

Recent vox-polls show that up to 90% of Australians do not want these guys to enter Australia.

What if everyone wanted to jump off a bridge. Would that make it smart..or right

While Australians have no problem with helping out genuine refugees, who enter the country by legal means, there is no reason why Australia should be expected to continue to accept illegal refugees who think they have the right to pay people smugglers $$$ and jump the immigration queues.

You cant jump a queue that doesn't exist...Refugees are refugees, they flee trouble, thats it. Their may be some that arn't genuine in this load of people. But what about the ones that are. Do they go back to Afghanistan...or Iraq? How do you know what you have on that boat if you dont assess them! If they are from Afghanistan, they are most likey going to be approved.

As far as I can see, the current Australian regime is really popular in the polls for their "stand" against the refugees.

Yep...your right it seems. Talk back radio here is scary here. Ignorance is bliss with a lot of people. People like to get angry at someone or something. With Dubs its 'this system of things', with other people its immigrants or whatever happens to be in the news at the time.
I haven't been over there for awhile, but on the the ninemsn.com.au discussion board under 'news', all it was a few weeks back was: 'Get rid of illegals'...'feed them to sharks' etc. It was pretty pathetic. And these people just use the same arguments too (if you can call them that)...say the same emotive things over and over.

Well...your probably right Ozzie mate. My point was however that these refugees have an idealistic view of Australia. They have no idea that they will be caught, spent a few years in a jail like situation and then be set back. They think they are coming to the good life. Do you think the smugglers tell them their going to get caught. No way...they take their money, say we'll get you in undetected and you'll live happily ever after.

Who is going to get the message. They arn't getting the message in the first place. The OZ government spents plenty in advertising over in indonesia (a popular jumping off point) about the perils, but they still come. The idea that they could be sending a message by doing this is strange...The message will fall on deaf ears. We will still be taking them in years to come...unless we decide to sink their boats when they hit our territorial waters.

you will appreciate that the Australian coastline is vast and the task of keeping the 'borders' safe is particularly difficult. Some say that it's impossible to maintain a secure coastline as vast as ours.

We do have a large border, but most of its harsh desert, and as a nation we are still relatively isolated.

For the past few years we have become a 'popular' destination for thousands of boat people.

Nowhere near as popular as certain european countries on the mediteranean coast. Apparently they get a huge influx from Africa. Our refugee influx is relatively minor to other countries.

What, the smugglers. The people who smuggle these people in dont tell them them of the risks or that they will most likely get caught. They will still come. These people are desperate. A lot are fleaing Afghanistan...and Iraq, a country we have imposed harsh sanctions on!

What are we supposed to do. Indonesia wont take them. We have a duty of care...or we could just feed them to the sharks like some talk back idiots want to do.

please read it all, i know it's a bit long, but you need to read it all to see where i am coming from.

i beleive in creation in the sense that the big bang and spontaneous generation don't make logical sense to me.

i am sure funkyderek and jan will have some fun with me on this one.

To deny macro-evolution while affirming micro-evolution is equivalent to accepting that it is true (an observed fact) that a continent can drift ten centimeters in a century, while still denying that multiplication works and that a continent can drift 1 km in a million years.It is logically indefensible and absurd.

What is a 'biological kind' anyway? How do you define it?

Are all Cats really one 'kind'. There is a HUGE variety within the cat family you know!. You have tigers, lions, the domestic cat, puma, Sabre tooth tiger, Cheetah, Fred Hall etc.

Are all Fish one 'kind'

Are all Birds one 'kind'

Are all invertebrates one 'kind'

Are we to be grouped in the same 'kind' as chimps?

Charles Darwin assumed in his theories that because micro-evolution occurs then macro-evolution must also be possible

Why isn't that a fair assumption? Macro-evolution is just more micro-evolution
