David,
your point about the criteria JWs use is well taken. At any rate, though, there was a decrease because, by the same criteria, that 1.3 percent increase was what 2.4? last year.
Anyway one cuts it, they're in troubles. If the criteria is the same, they're decreasing; if the criteria is changing, they're dishonest.
What is worse is that, in my opinion at least, they're both decreasing and WT is dishonest. Here's why: think about this 15 minute rule which was non-existent about 2 years ago. Think about this whole host of rules about when to count a non-baptized member as a "publisher", which was also non-existent as far as I know not so long ago.
They keep getting ever more creative about how to count someone...
...and I won't be surprised if they drop the whole statistics section in the Watchtower if those numbers don't improve soon.

SERVICE REPORT 2005 : WATCHTOWER FEB 1ST 2006

memorial partakers 8524 (compared to 8570 in 2004).
most european and nth american lands show pretty static figs - britain 1% increase, canada 0%, germany 0%, france 1%, usa 0%... but spare a thought for the inhabitants of zambia where 1 person in 90 is a reporting witness, must be hell going down to the local market!

Brand New Blood Card
by PoppyR inhubby has just come back from the service meeting where they have been handed out brand new style blood cards, now called 'advance decision to refuse specified medical treatment' .
it's quite a bit different.
and has the line on it about giving permission to the hospital liason committee to see your notes and medical records.. very scary stuff i think, and i certainly wont be filling one in.. i'm really short of time tonight, but will scan it in, along with the notes that go with it and try and post it some time over the next day or so if someone else doesn't beat me to it!.

"We'll have to wait to see if there are any changes in the US card."
Precisely what I thought too. Because of legal requirements in the US, the card may be a little different.
Can't wait to see the BLOODY card. :) -

WHAT'S NEW? DOORSTEP BIBLE STUDIES!
by stillAwitness inso i'm in service this morning and the young sister i was working with had what they call now a "doorstep bible study" .
its been encouraged by the fds that if one has a regular return visit with an interested one that one can hold a bible study by having them read one or two paragraphs out of the require brochure and ask the questions right at their doorstep.. i've never actually seen it done and boy let me tell you it was the most awkard, ridiculous thing i have ever seen!
the poor sister (who was nothing older thatn 15) is standing at the door having this grown woman read a paragraph out of the require brochure, and after having her ansewring the question and read a scripture she then then tells her she'll see her next week!

Yes, this is not a novel. Been there, tried that!
The problem is that in our area it was difficult even to finish the first sentence without hearing a "NO, I'M OK"... how can they expect the householder to READ the freaking paragraph and even ANSWER the question... (shaking head)
No, not gonna happen; not in my neck of woods here. :)

THE NEWS IS WAY WAY WAY BIGGER
by ffoeg inthe place is in the wilderness, the thing acting as a restraint is the face of the serpent.. .
how does someone gain access to the actual temple of the god and further yet, how is he able to lift himself up above everyone who is called god?.
god's spirit-directed organisation ---- (the man) ----------------- a god?.

Is the "Good News" really about 1914?
by rockhound in"the good news" that jehovahs witnesses preach from door to door, world wide, has a definite theme that is different than "the good news" preached by the churches of christendom.
"let the honest-hearted person compare the kind of preaching of the gospel done by the religious systems of christendom during all the centuries with that done by jehovah's witnesses since the end of world war i in 1918. they are not one and the same kind.
that of jehovah's witnesses is really "gospel" or "good news," as of god's heavenly kingdom that was established by the enthronement of his son jesus christ at the end of the gentile times in 1914.

What a joy!
Brazil had an increase of only 2%, which is a 50% cut from last year (4%).
Just think about this: as recent as 2000, this number was 5%; and as recent as in the 80's this number was in the double digit domain.
Brazil has finally been introduced to the Information Age! :)
But Mexico got smarter: It's now in the 3rd place in number of dubs, having only 1% increase over 2004.
Jehovah has greatly blessed our work!
