an Elder in a former congregation didn't believe in doing anything to help inmates because 'They are in there for a reason'.
Yet if WT can gain converts by exploiting their situation, it has no problem sending JWs to preach to prisoners.
several years ago, i was studying the bible (jw literature) with an ms from the local congregation.
i happened to mention that i had several pen pals who were incarcerated in various prisons.
no matter what crimes they committed, i said i saw them as fellow human being who deserved to have a friend to write to.

Gorbatchov: My respect for the Wachtower is growing more and more. They made a plan to soften the sharp religion.
As long as WT continues to preach death to billions of non-JWs at Armageddon (and lately the idea that most JWs won't survive is growing among JWs themselves), has a harsh disfellowshipping policy, uses harsh Judicial Committees which violate basic rights to enforce conformity, has no financial transparency to its members, bans blood transfusions, has no charities, etc, I don't know how WT can be considered as 'softening'.
You can candycoat a turd...but it's still a turd.
As far as the "children's section" pictured above, all I have to say is this:
"It has been found that the best way to insure implicit obedience is to commence tyranny in the nursery." -Benjamin Disraeli, British Prime Minister

Notice the picture that's supposed to be "fun" for kids is of Caleb going door to door. That's not fun...it's pure indoctrination.

even sci am magazine is getting in on the et/religion question.. they would have to give up blood pie to be witnesses though.

Are there Klingons near Uranus?
the witnesses and adventist remind me of monty python comedy...."no we are not wrong our king is right here...he is invisible.

i've been drinking 1 tbs with a glass of water twice daily for digestion for about 3 weeks now.
i've found it helps, but it also acts as an appetite suppressant; i've lost several pounds since using it.
i'm consuming fewer calories because i'm just not as hungry as before.
ADCMS - You seem full of piss and vinegar today!
Very true...but only about two tablespoons worth (of vinegar). As for the other, I have no idea...

I think we have exhausted this subject
Try to not sound too acerbic when talking about vinegar, Gregor.

I have found an enema consisting of 3 parts apple cider vineger to 1 part fresh apple juice to be effective.
It gives the pleasant sensation of sitting in an orchard at harvesttime when using the bathroom.
So does sprinkling vinegar on popcorn feel like being at the movies when you use the bathroom?
YY2: Here's a nice Seventh Day Adventist video teaching aid:
String Theory is more understandable than SDA nonsense.
I'm not sure which is more important... the 1914 doctrine or the 144,000 doctrine. Take away 1914, a bunch of JWs leave, but a bunch more will stay. Changing the 144,000 doctrine, however, becomes a lot more personal
Take away 1914 and we're no longer in the last days (this "generation"), Jesus isn't ruling, and the WT wasn't chosen as god's spokeman (1914 is critical to establishing 1918/1919 in WT timeline).
Take away the 144,000 doctrine and most JWs don't give a damn...because they aren't going to heaven anyway. What do they care if one or 144,000 are going to heaven? 8 million JWs aren't in the club anyway so it doesn't matter.
Of course, all this is a moot point because WT made the same exact claims and attached as much importance to the year 1874.
We'll know for sure what is actually in this seven-minute video next week, but something tells me WT will still hang on to the date but present a nice song-and-dance that essentially minimizes it to a point of irrelevance. Why do I say this?? Do WT or JWs talk about 1874?
Oubliette: ...is anyone else creeped out that there is even an expression "our beliefs about 1914"?
The clear implication is that all JWs everywhere have exactly the same "beliefs" about the significance of this number.
Actually, to me it makes perfect sense:
"The endeavor to compel all men to think alike on all subjects, culminated in the great apostasy..." Wt Sep. 1893, p.264
Julia: So this tells me jws don't even know why they believe 1914 is significant
I am often staggered at the ignorance JWs have as to their own beliefs. Arguably, 1914 is the most important doctrine to JWs, yet, especially among those that have studied and been baptized in the last 10-15 years, they cannot explain it and have no desire to. Frankly, in JW Land, understanding your beliefs has little relevance and is secondary to blind obedience.
