Donkey's never-ending atheism thread
by donkey inwih the permission of simon, i would like to start a thread to act as a collection of thought, quotes and miscellany on atheism and agnosticism.
there are so many other threads on this subject but no one place which one can go to on here.
i have much to share - enjoy and contribute with me please.give me the storm and stress of thought and action rather than the dead calm of ignorance and faith.

I mean no personal disrespect to you or anyone else. All I want to do is challenge ideas (some held sacred). It is summarised by:
There is always need of persons not only to discover new truths, and point out when what were once truths are true no longer, but also to commence new practices, and set the example of more enlightened conduct, and better taste and sense in human life.

This is just another attack on Christianity
Nah, I deny all God's Christian and otherwise.
Besides how am I attacking something which doesn't exist? ;-)

I love Ingersoll.

Reach for God
by donkey inwhy do humans search and/or reach for god?.
if they are honest with themselves it is because have a fear or death or of non-existence.
or they draw "power" from god.

Blueblades - honest people are the best people!! Thanks.
I have started a thread called "Donkey's never ending atheism thread" http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/forum/thread.aspx?id=41460&site=3
I appreciate it if you join in on our journey. But I like the Epicurian response to your questions (questions which all of us ask over and over).
Why should I fear death? If I am, death is not. If death is, I am not. Why should I fear that which cannot exist when I do?
Asses and lasses....what a combo -

One of my personal favorites comes from Epicurus who put it this way:
Why should I fear death? If I am, death is not. If death is, I am not. Why should I fear that which cannot exist when I do?
and again:
If the gods listened to the prayers of men, all humankind would quickly perish since they constantly pray for many evils to befall one another
and finally
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? -

I must be boring or egotistical (the only one replying to my threads). Nevertheless, in case someone is interested here we go again...
Taken from "The Joyous Science" - Nietzsche
Have you not heard of that madman who lit a lantern in the bright morning hours, ran to the market place, and cried incessantly: "I seek God! I seek God!"...
The madman jumped into their midst and pierced them with his eyes. "Whither is God?" he cried; "I will tell you. We have killed himyou and I. All of us are his murderers. But how did we do this? How could we drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What were we doing when we unchained the earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving? Away from all suns?"
"God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him.
"How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves?... Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it?..."
Here the madman fell silent and looked again at his listeners... "I have come too early," he said then; "my time is not yet. This tremendous event is still on its way, still wandering; it has not yet reached the ears of men. Lightning and thunder require time; the light of the stars requires time; deeds, though done, still require time to be seen and heard. This deed is still more distant from them than the most distant starsand yet they have done it themselves."
Freddy concluded that the Christian notion of God was dead. Did God effectively die too?
