Yes - one Christmas was given a Turkey by a suopplier or someone so took it home and it was cooking away merrily with a delicious "Turkey" odour whilst the congregation book study was held in out living room. After the group one old brother said "is that a turkey cooking?" to which I replied - "yes - it was a gift from ..." (whoever cant remember now) He almost went apoplectic wuith rage and dragged his wife and children out of the house "bewfore they got contaminated" - how we all laughed at such nonsense - still took another 3 decades to convince me I was wasting our lives in the dub kingdom- - and the Turkey was the best we ever had and most useful as next week the Bether Truck delivery was held over for some technical/wqeather reason so we had to feed the truck driver brother and another brother he was training - guess what they got for dinner..no complaints ...it all vanished before us...told them what old brother had said and theylaughed out loud...dont think the meal contaminated them....the following week the old brother asked for a move from my group (oh joy to be rid of him!)

As a JW did you "take a turkey" or accept the Xmas Bonus?
by confusedjw ini felt it hypocritical to take a turkey abviously meant for thanksgiving.
i didn't like buying the easter candy after easter either as it was "food sacrificed to idols".. years ago at a place i worked they gave out a xmas bonus which i returned.
( a few hundred dollars which we sure could have used) they assured me that it was an "end of the year" bonus.

Only in America....?
by core inmuch said here recently re the world at large and how it views the us - not too favorably overall - however - must make this point - president bush has just announced his intention to have as secretary of state condoleeza rice - now for me that is amazing and a credit to the american system - she is from a poor, black american background, was rejected years ago in the south by the democrats - yet by hard work she has risen to the very top - cant see that happening in similar circumstances here in the uk - clearly one difference between us is that hard work can get rewarded in the us.
a further note - seeing president bush introduce her when announcing his intention to put her nomination forward, i for one was struck by his apparent absolute admiration for this lady, for once he had no smirk as she spoke, rather he looked on her with evident pride and respect.
not a fan of gw but must give him marks here for his positive discrimination in favor of talent regardless of background, ethnicity or whatever.

As a Republican President I would have expected far less of him - he deserves a pat on the back for this move and the US should be proud that Ms Rice has been rewarded for her hard work, not hampered by her background

NWT Scholars

the book, reasoning from the scriptures does not inform the reader on who are the nwt scholars nor their education background.
could someone provide some information concerning the nwt scholars?

WT chronology has a long and proud history over many centuries which now provides a good foundation for the interpretation of prophecy and eschatology
Scholar - sorry but I fail to see how a vast number of people, who have had failed WT Prophecy to live with, would agree with you - if WT Chronology was unflawed then 1975 must have passed my by, 1914 my grandparents must have missed "the rapture" and so on and on - WT Chronology is inextricably linked with the failed dates so it is anything but a good foundation for interpretation of prophecy or are we all missing something - is this the new system, has Satan been Abyssed? Are the 144,000 complete and ruling from the heavens - WT Chronology promised this and more - .....long ago
Re Peer Review and Jonssons book - I have read it and do not see anything but a book of cold information - let the reader use discernment - it satisfies me - and...just looked over my (complete since 1956) library of Theocratic Literature and can find no scholarly works other than Aid Book/Insight - Yes books like Qualified to be Ministers were excellent for purpose but not scholarly reviews of critical chronology - I have had sight of Furulis works (not sure if all of them) and they seem no more scholarly than many of the posts here.
Simple issue is for individuals to decide as no one acid test will convince you or me - for me I have seen the light - and it does not come from Brooklyn - I have seen so many changes in my time as a witness that I cannot accept that a God of Principle, fixed and absolute, would allow such error to exist in the past - yes I have heard the one about "imperfect men" and it does not wash - imperfect = no Holy Spirit in my book.
May I ask you why you think we live so deep into the time of the end, why 1975 is now a faded memory? Why were we misled - - I lived throught those times (as an elder) and know that it was not the publishers wagging this particular dog but the WT leading us all a merry dance - your chronology should have prevented many from destroying the quality of their lives by serving the Organisation which promoted 1975 - promoted - pushed and rammed down our throats from the top.

I have pointed out on this forum that there are chronologies available toafay but not one from apostates or WT critics.
Not sure what logic is employed here - as most Chronologies will have been produced by those who are not - and do not support - Jehovah's Witnesses then the absence of an "apostate" chronology - or one labelled "apostate" is fatuous
From memory I recall Scholar that you have made much in the past of "peer review" when you have criticised the writings of Jonsson - do you apply the same rule rigidly to the NWT (and other publications since from the WT) becasue to be even handed and fair you should hold to one rule for all - not selectively removing the WT writers from any "peer reviews" because of anonymity.
The study of chronology is complex and there is no uniformity within scholarship on this subject but the WT Society fro its earliest history has provided a coherent presentation of the biblical data with the secular data. In other words we have always had a chronology that establishes prophecy and buils faith in God's Word.
"We have always had a chronology..." .How True - leading to 1914, 1925 and 1975 to name but a few of the fatal failures of this chrinology.
Our chronology is based upon Absolute or pivotal dates and is not conjured out of thin air as you imply
Absolute Dates...now there's a phrase I can't remember seeing in WT print for many years - think that little phrase was dropped by the WT years ago.
Jehovah's Witnesses are interested in biblical scholarship as evidenced by the making of a translation which is the envy of scholars and proves that we are competent in producing works of serious scholarship.
Reviewing the recent publications from the WT one can only wonder at the lack of any serious content - when was the last book of serious scholarship - the Aid Book perhaps - but of course that was the work of Apostates!
"Scholar BA MA Studies in Religion"
Core writes - yes I also have the right to use designations of degrees and awards but dont use them as they prove nothing - your use of such shows that you are concerned with such worldly trifles - I am concerned with gaining back what I lost in serving the WT for decades amd making the most of my life - chronology - of your sort - has failed me - no Paradise, No New System, No Justice - just more loads and burdens from the "faithful slave" - and please dont even get started on the verse regarding those who mock the presence of the son of man etc - you and your leaders are blinded to the simple truth that every "tack" you make shows how flawed your chronology is - if it was from God would it have needed "tacking" regularly, I think not.

JWGift.org: New Watchtower Website for Online Donations

As the donations site is from the UK branch is this a test before going worldwide with the worldwide donations work ?
Clearly a clever way of reducing paperwork to take advantage of the UK Gift Aid scheme - but does the money stay in the UK (a question for the Charities Commissiion ?) or does it wander of to help in the "undeveloped" countries i.e., Brooklyn USA
As Someone said "And this Good News off the Donations Methods must be preached throughout the earth and then the end will come"
Or as it might say at Phillipians 1:10 "...that you make sure of the more important things, like how to donate, so that you may be spotless and unblemished..........."

Am I being totally unreasonable here?
by Princess inmy son is in a school for smart kids.
they call it "challenge".
he is in 2nd grade, just turned 8 last month.

...if the same standard is applied across all in the year group/grade then is this a big issue ? Is there more to it than just this simple spelling test...?
Having been at a seminar at a UK University this past week this brings to mind the words of the Vice-Chancellor when he said "...years ago a significant number of graduates took up teaching as a career - now we do all we can to discourage them because the profession is so demoralised and debilitating..."

This not British V American---------------BUT
by vitty inas an english speaking person, with an english accent, living in england.
why were we subjected every year to the conventions drama with an american voice over.. could they not have had tapes with an english accent?.
i have nothing against the american accent, some are very pleasent .

Back in around '65 at Blackpool (?) England the drama was ( as they all were then) acted out live with microphones on stage for the players to use - no tape from Brooklyn - just several copies of the actual script.
The Jeremiah drama was (idea of the CO _ Ernie Elliott ??) actually acted out and taped on reel to reel tapes in a local Kingdom Hall - in advance of the assembly -, and then the actors mimed at the actual assembly - I think from the favorable reviews that set a standard for some years so that those involved in assemblies in the UK all acted out and taped the drama well beforehand - of course that was enjoyable and took up too much time so the Org directed that one set of tapes would be made (in Brooklyn) and all English speaking assemblies would use them - the result being the ludicrous American accents (spoken out in the UK that is - ludicrously out of place)

Suicide.... how do you view people who "attempt" it?
by outbutnotdown inanybody who has read my other recent posts...... don't worry, this is absolutely not about me feeling that way... i'm very happy, thanks..... .
my roommate, however, had a friend who committed suicide a couple of weeks ago and she just broke up with her boyfriend and he was saying things similar to what the guy who committed suicide awhile back was saying just before he took his life.
it is freaking her out.

I can only give my side of it. I reached a point were with debts, trying to bring up a large family, being a JW etc. My mind finally blew a fuse, is how I describe it. I just did not see any escape from my problems.
Gordy
Cant agree more with you - the constant pressure of financial burdens, strains of living can become too much so that rational thinking is impossible - been there - seems only way out is death - think you won't be missed and insurance pays off all your debts so family will be better off without you - still feel that way 24 hours a day - cant bear to be alone so that my mind can go over and over all my worries and guilt at wasting so much of my life and childrens opportunities in slavedom to the black Tower of the WT
Suicide has been descirbesd as a cowards way out but I think any poor soul driven to it must be in a desperate state
Regards those who "attempt" suicide - possibly several times - different class of problem - such poor souls need attention/support - great tragedy if they succeed in a suicide attempt as a cry for help is what is being made
