First and most important is your mothers emotional/physical health - is she safe with this man - sounds to me as if she would be better forgetting any help from elders and making other living arrangements - the husband/elder is unlikely to change his spots and pressure / exposure will probably make him WORSE in private - get your mother out of there while she is still sane

Portuguese Law would not support any action as the news of what is apparently the cause of the Police assigning these two people as "suspects" has not been released by the Police - the suspect status assigned to people means that the Police make no comment or give any information to anyone unless and until charge are laid before a court. "Suspect" status protects the person in some ways and I am surprised that the parents were never assigned that status from day one - in fact they could have requested it - giving "suspect" status opens no doors to big money claims as Portugal operates its laws as it does and has done for centuries, with little in the way of compensation culture -
On the issue of the car/blood etc - I do not think that this couple had 5 minutes out of the camera to allow them to dispose of a body 25 days after the disappearance - also the UK Police are working with the Portuguese Police which makes me think they have some sort of evidence of which we know nothing
For Mr & Mrs McCann now to scream that the Police are framing them is hysterical and ridiculous - what else did they expect at this stage given the background here. Some reports have said that the McCanns refused to answer 40 specific questions from the Police - hardly full cooperation if true.To suggest the Portuguese Police are inept fools may have some credence but to suggest they are framing someone in the light of the worlds spotlight is highly unlikely - only a court - not the Police can weigh any evidence as to guilt/innocence. Suspect status in Portuguese Law gives rights to the "suspect" - such as the right to silence - which witnesses do not have. The Police should have done this months ago -

Gill - you are absolutely correct - in past times holidays were "family" events and grandparents stayed in when parents went out and vise versa - our family holidays included all sorts of relatives/generations so young children were NEVER left alone - in uyears gone by finding family friendly eating places was difficult but now - very easy and in holiday resorts they cater for just that market - people with families. The children - twins as well as Madeleine - should have been with the family for the meal and all home together later in the evening - nothing excuses the criminal negligence involved here - everyone has great sympathy for the distress involved but underneath that I would dispute the claim made by this family "that everyone leaves their children alone at some time"
Think this mystery will never go away - if any charges and acquittal always the whiff of doubt - if a conviction - always a claim on a miscarriage of justice - as no 100% rock solid evidence it looks to me to be going into the mystery books for all time -

In the Sally Clarke case the evidence was twisted against her by a flawed "expert witness" - who has since been discredited - I do not think Mrs Clarkes demeanour played a part in her conviction - what did was the assertion as fact of the "belief" of Professor Sir Roy Meadows.
Whatever the Portuguese Police know we can be sure - WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY KNOW -
Sniffer dogs were apparently only brought into the picture recently (from the UK Police)
There are too many unaswered questions to rush to convict or acquit.
What is certain is that leaving the children was wilfull neglect, and that if the parents had been from a different background the twins would now be in the care of the Social Services.
I would assume that if solid evidence existed at this point then arrests/charges would have been made - as none have it seems insufficient evidence exists.
This case should warn any parent abroad on holiday - look after your children - no one else will.
As regards the fishy smell - yes 2 from my viewpoint - an apparently hapless Criminal investigation, and a set of parents with a lot of explaining to do. -

The UK Charities Commission website lists Michael Porter as an elder (Trustee) of the Mill Hill Congregation - not certain it is the same person but probability tells me it could be - notable Bethel heavies in that cong - Ron (if I take the emblems can I be on the GB please?) To quote from above - yes the repentance card - amazing how he was repentant AFTER he was exposed and did not just "see the light" with no threat of Police action hanging over him. If he is still an elder then anyone of any moral fibre in Clevedon/Portishead should refuse to attend meetings at which he is welcome - not that they will as doubtless a local needs item has been given to keep them in line.
This case nearly exactly reflects a case which affected my daughters and caused our realisation that WT Land was really Fairy Land and not a Spiritual Paradise - there was a good side - we got out - but the bad side is still with us after many years as our (now older of course) children were permanently traumatised by a man similar to this pervert. I wonder what hois neighbours think of having him in ther midst?
This has brought flooding back all the nightmare memories of our case and the disgraceful handling by imbeciles on a JC who managed to see that a friend of theirs walked free - no DF. Seeing the news has caused deep trauma to our girls again - have the WT learned nothing - we were treated as if we were the problem - not the pervert elder - and guess what - did our friends and family in the truth support us - yes you guessed "wait on Jehovah" "elders are imperfect men" etc etc - they were and are as much use as a chocoltae fireguard -the judge here is a disgrace - he does not live, as we do, with the permanent scarring and emotional trauma people like this elder cause. Seeing him on TV - leaving court with his wife clutching his arm made us all feel sick - is she MAD? The victims count for zilch in WT land - just go away and dont rock the boat - this sickening episode has brought back to the surface all the buried horrors caused by an elder such as this, a trusted person. allowed into this home because of what he was (a respected elder)/stood for - never a day goes by without us bitterly regretting how we let down our children by trusting thee WT to support us and elders in particular. If our children had died it would have been easier for them as they would not be troubled by the dark nightmares of memory - and here this judge lets this man walk the streets - I do not condone violence but if I met him I would not be responsible for my actions as he represents what has damn near destroyed us - something the judge in this case clearly did not comprehend - a factor in the sentence was (as reported) because "he had a living faith" - words fail me - how anyone can read of this and not be sickened I do not know
I am not active in Silentlambs nor do I support their methods nor will I buy any of the CDs re Barbara Andersons material.
I have seen first hand the loving care of the society - shut up or be disfellowshipped - whilst perverts claim "repentance" - if there is a God he must be hanging his head in shame tonight -

HELP ! UK - new law to allow one person to refuse blood for another
by Enjoying freedom inmental capacity act 2005. does anyone know if the wtbts are doing anything about the new provision within the mental capacity act for a person to authorise another to make healthcare decisions?.
this is a completely new concept for those of us in england, wales and northern ireland.. until now (well 1 october!
) an enduring power of attorney would only allow an attorney to be appointed to make decisions about finance.. under the new lasting power of attorney (mental capacity act 2005 s9) the donor (aged over 18 years) can appoint an attorney to make personal welfare decisions (ie healthcare decisions) on their behalf if they lose capacity to make the decision for themselves.

The new provision of Lasting Power of Attorney replaces the present provision of an Enduring Power of Attorney - and it has indeed got much wider scope - however it is highly unlikely that very many will execute the new LPA as they all now need registering with the Court of Protection and the cost is several hundred pounds - under the old arrangement - which had no implications for healthcare, only financial management, an EPA was only required to be registered if the donor (the person granting the power) had lost mental capacity. A further difference is that with a LPA the attorney has to maintain and provide for the Court of Protection detailed accounts every year, regarding the use of the donors assets - the main reason for the change as currently attorneys were freely able to plunder the assets of those they served with little prospect of discovery.
Given the cost of registration it seems unlikely that many dubs will use this system.
As with most UK legislation the government has rushed this through but has as yet still not published to forms to be used and legal practices are not yet advised of all the fees, regulations etc involved - another cock-up ala HIPS.
As a final point - any existing EPAs are still valid for financial management and do not need registration unless the donor becomes mentally incapable. -

i know that there are hundreds of elders in the same position as myself (have had our awakening and have come to realize that "the truth" is a sham).. i encourage you to continue to serve as an elder and for you to work together with other like minded elders as a collective force for true good.
there is much we can do from the inside to help the cause.. there are thousands and indeed millions of kind and honest hearted people whose only crime is that they have allowed themselves to be deceived and are still active jws.

as said above - Governments should have bridging programs to help families get off Welfare.
That is the problem in the UK - a family (married or not) with a few children are trapped in that if the man or woman in a sole parent family gets work - anything over a very basic amount reduces their Working Tax Credit and other Social Security benefits
Having large families may appear good for the future stock of the country however it is not unreasonable (as a tax payer) to be appalled by this farce - who will convert a former hotel for anyone with a mortgage - will the government pay it if they lose their job (NO!)
This family is an example of the madness of the current social security system - to match the net earnings of this family I think a man woyuld need to earn around £100k pa at the least as his tax & National Insurance would soak up a large chunk of that leaving him to pay his mortgage and council tax (which this family have no worries about)
As a taxpayer at 40% of earnings (plus NI deductions on top) I cannot but wonder why we struggled with 3 children when the answer was to have more and less financial worry!
