Our CLAM meeting (vid): SELF-NEGATION is the first "treasure" from first meeting segment
by Gilgamesh inin the first sample video of the clam meeting (christian life and ministry) at about 5 minutes, 50 seconds in, a brother (steven phillips) is assigned the first segment of the new meeting, "treasures from god's word.
" ( http://tv.jw.org/#video/vodstudio/pub-jwbrd_201510_5_video ).
he shows just how sloppy the wts still is at trying to explain the deeper meanings of scriptures.

TOH: It's not the "old" TEACH book, oubliette - it's still the one to use.
I know. Apparently you haven't read all of my posts on this thread.
TOH: The new book is for those with limited capacity, and therefore it is no wonder it is written the way it is written.
I know. Apparently you haven't read all of my posts on this thread.
TOH: I don't see how you can critisize [sic] a book for those with learning difficulties to be written in a not-too-academic way.
I know. Apparently you haven't read all of my posts on this thread. Please see my response to Barrold at the top of page 2 of this thread.

Ding: Has anyone done a comparative analysis of the previous version and this one? Changes, etc.?
Yes. As I have said several times on this thread, I previously analyzed the old Bible Teach book using the same software based analytical tools. It only scored one grade level higher.

GrreatTeacher, that is a very informative comparison: Stellaluna to the new Bible Teach book!
Thanks for sharing your research. Really telling.
GT: that is a powerful thing to teach a 5 year old: whether something could be true or not. This is how critical thinking begins.
I totally agree. I wish I'd been taught those skills better when I was a kid. Maybe I would never have joined this cult!

Can this forum mark the "Previously read" post so that I will land on the first unread post next log in?
by notjustyet inbasically it would be nice to come to the site and not have to wade through all the previously read ( by me) post on a thread.. i just want to initially land on the next unread post when i enter a thread.

Grreat Teacher: I still think 5th grade reading level is a little optimistic. Reading for the 5th grade classes I have taught was more advanced than JW literature.
I agree.
However, this is our subjective opinion, albeit one informed by years of classroom experience as teachers working with real curriculum. This is why I used these AI analytical tools to score the reading level of this new "Bible education" tool. It is completely objective and no one can accuse me of bias.
Another point I'd like to address in response to your comment as a professional educator: Even 5th graders can be taught emergent critical thinking skills. There is obviously none of that in any WT literature.

Barrold: So it's really not surprising at all that the book is aimed at a low reading level.
True, but the old Bible Teach book was not significantly higher. When I ran the opening paragraphs from it through the same reading level analysis software it only scored one grade level higher.
This organization has absolutely NO materials designed to challenge an individuals thinking ability or satisfy a desire for deeper meaning and understanding. They used to have publications that at least appeared to do this, but those days are long gone. (For example, Crazy Freddie Franz' ideas were whacky and wrong, but at least they were interesting and as intellectually stimulating as a piece of good fiction).
Please also see my comments in the post immediately ^^^^^ above.

Pete: Either the individuals writing this material have diminished reading and comprehensive abilities or they are trying to make sure that the message is simple enough for anyone to read and understand.
It's actually not that easy to write clearly and consistently at a specific level of reading ability. This suggests the your second hypothesis. Although I disagree with the "for anyone" piece. This writing suggests a deliberate targeting of people with limited reading ability and/or limited intelligence.
They are clearly NOT interested in appealing to anyone of above average intellect or academic ability. I believe that this is because they are very much aware that anyone in either of those groups just will not be interested in the religion, their belief or false promises.
Those that are stuck in the cult but that are reasonably intelligent are almost always held captive by the thread of being shunned by their entire family and alleged friends.
Let's review: It's a cult!
