Honestly, what did she expect. She works/(was working) at a private, fundamentalist Christian college that requires all faculty and staff to sign a very specific statement of faith. -

Xanthippe: Philosophy deduced the existence of fundamental particles thousands of years ago.
Actually, it was philosophers that did that. Democritus was the man, building on ideas formulated by his teacher Leucippus!
Cofty: Much of what passes for philosophy is nothing more than mental masturbation
Can I do it until I need glasses?
Seriously though, we should not forget that science is ultimately a philosophical approach to trying to understand reality.
The difference between science and religion is that with science knowledge is discovered and to be freely shared with all whereas with religion knowledge is allegedly "revealed" and held only in the hands of an elite (self-proclaimed) individual or group.
The former can and should be empowering to all and for everyone, while the latter is a means to hold power exclusively for purposes of control over the masses.

"For sale: baby shoes, never worn"
by Simon inif you've never come across the above title before, it's considered to be the shortest novel possible.
a story, possibly a moving one, in just 6 words attributed to earnest hemingway.. it started a genre called "flash fiction" which is a memoir in six-words.. what would yours be?.
indoctrinated child found freedom, love, family.

Mephis: "case law shifted one way and then back since, under the impact of various new legislation."
Thank you Mephis, now we have a more balanced presentation of the facts, which is quite a bit different from what the terse statement you initially provided indicated.
Thank you for proving my point: these situations are too complicated to be reduced to simplistic solutions.
