Your earliest doubt?
by Apognophos inthis might be an unfair question for those who have been out of the organization for decades, but i'm wondering if any of you remember your earliest doubt -- maybe something odd that occurred to you as a kid (if you were a jw then).
please try to limit to two doubts at the most :-).
i think my first "doubt" was simply realizing that at the time of the flood, every animal that wasn't in the ark died (well, besides the fish, supposedly).

My earliest doubt was a dream I had when I was about 6 that listed religions on a giant TV screen with a true or false indicator. As each screen came on with a different faith, the only indicator that was highlighted was the false one. I was completely confident that when the JW screen came on it would indicate true. However when it came up, it too was false and I still remember the shock feeling I felt when I woke up to this day.

Bible Writers not just ignorant "goat herders"

i don't post much but this does irk me.
yes a few may have been shepherds or fisherman, but a fair amount were far more educated and were professionals in their fields of occupation.

I think the bible is a valuable book even if looked at in only secular terms. Even if it doesn’t track with archaeological history, and God doesn’t speak where he is said to, or if Genesis and other books were an evolved collection of pre-existing religious ideas meshed into an evolving Jewish faith and so on. Even if that is all the case what is the bible? It is a record of our spiritual ancestor’s spiritual journey. It is a rare collection of key holes into how humanity felt and thought about big questions. As such it will still have value and relevance because we are still asking those questions as a species.
From my own point of view I think God can speak through that journey even despite the issues listed above. I don’t think God will come down and commandeer the human experience as that would defeat the object of us being here in the first place but I think he can act through it. In that respect the bible is a record of this in a variety of ways as complex as humans being are themselves.

1. what's the real purpose of life and creation?
so we're created to live a perfect life, two clowns over 6000 years ago made a mistake and everyone is paying for it, although no fault of our own?.

Sometimes when a building starts to fall down the best thing is to demolish it and start again with new foundations. I guess your questions are about what foundations and of what quality? I think being an agnostic is an intellectually honest starting place.
When I lost my faith years ago I had to start again, while at the same time deprogram myself of JW bias. I found that philosophy was a very pure intellectual discipline and highly useful for processing theological, spiritual and scientific questions. It doesn’t have the same materialist limits as science. So one can ask questions about purpose without being told it is an invalid question, while considering as well if it might be.
Each of your questions could take a book to even begin to answer, but it seems to me that they are all related to each other, so that the answer to one would be the answer to them all. It would be tempting to tell you what the answers are and take my opinion as the right one. However I recon you may have had enough of that type of thing. Do you want to believe there is a God? Is a good question I think to ask.

I like Mr Fry, several of my friends know him, but beyond that I agree with much of what he says except when it comes to some philosophical positions he holds. I saw his debate with Mr Hitchens against Ann Widdecombe and a Catholic priest, and they slaughtered them. Was well worth a watch.
