BETHELITES - Whatever Became of?

i often times wonder what happened to certain bethelites that i ran around with during my 1990s tenure there.

while there are still a few left there, the greater majority of them aren't there for various reasons (marriage, disillusionment, left the borg, etc).

a couple of cats i wonder about - there was one brother who i believe was from kansas, who got his fingers cut off in a printing press.

I know many of the Brooklyn support services crew and legal dept people from 1989-95 and pretty much any Canadian Bethelite from 84-95. I'd love to hear of any that have seent he light, left, or pretty much any news. I loved those people as my family. It is too bad they ar so short sighted that their love can only be for those who think the same as they do.

Despite my bravado, I miss so many, Rob & Paula Hinch (now missionaries in Malawi), Dave and Jennifer Nelson (still serving in Toronto). They were my best friends and still could be if they would just open thier minds and remove their prejudice. They don't hve to change their beliefs but just be open to be friends with someone who doesn't believe as they do. sad

I am not here to change them but would love to be their friends again.

i think 10 years is about long enough to be hanging out on jw related boards.

its been an interesting and educational ride folks.

i was already out mentally and had planned my fade when i found h20 late in 96. who woulda thunk that i would end up running the friggin site?!?!

Many a sleepless night and pretty much thankless job modding a discussion board made up of cultists and those who depart from it. I admire Simon and Ang for the intestinal fortitude they demonstrated keeping it alive this long!

I've encountered amazing people too numerous to list, those who were hurting, the angry, the bitter, those wanting to help. I also saw vile excuses for humanity appear who inflicted humiliation and upset for their own pleasure. But just like most cross-sections of humanity the good far outweighed the bad. The trick is not to waste 80% of your energy on the 20%. Lesson learned.

I'll still likely get involved in the legal battles if I see the Bethel lawyers lying to the courts again (like I did in the Hughes case for example) but otherwise I am done. Life is too exciting to continue thinking and caring about the past. I've done my penance for the things I did as an elder and Bethelite. (one of the main reasons I accepted the job as ForumDirector at H20 - guilt)

But my life is good. I move into my first home (3 bedroom bungalow with a nice yard, deck and woodshop) in two weeks. My career is flourishing. I have plenty of friends and acquaintences. SCREW YOU WATCHTOWER! I am happier and more content and at peace with myself now then I ever was a JW. To me that is the best revenge.

I am embarrassed to say I used this same illustration in a few Public Talks I used to give.

The scary part is that it is almost word for word. I know a few other Bethelites used it as well.

I am thinking it is quite funny that 13 years later, the GB is using an illustration created by a now apostate.

Me personnally? I am completely embarrassed and ashamed that I actually used to eblieve this stuff.

i got the idea for this thread by talking with a friend this weekend who had been abused by a father when young.

this person confronted this parent about it and got a very self righteous reply back from the offender.

already a precedent for exposing the watchtower society has been set.

If something would actually be gained by my posting my credentials for speaking with a certain authority on this topic I would. But I really don't believe that is really the point.

I was quoted today by an online Homeland Security Magazine as saying, "Emergencies + Egos + Agendas = Catastrophes."

Although the above quote is not related to the abuse issue, I believe it somewhat enforces Cog's point.

Obviously I need to spell it out for you:

You are promoting the circumvention of most democratic countries' civil protection laws and want to humiliate and presume guilty individuals purely on someone's say so. Anonymously posting names is a smear campaign not confrontation.

Llbh was much nicer but PEOPLE LIE. Just because they are an exjw doesn't mean they are immediately trustworthy about anything just on the basis of being an ex. Just as being a JW doesn't automatically mean you are honest. There are sick and disturbed people in the ranks of the JW's and the act of leaving doesn't miraculously cure that! I've repeatedly seen on these boards that all one has to do is claim to be an exjw, cry about a custody hearing and immediately they are presumed to be the better parent. In some cases the JW is by far more stable.

There are thousands of abuse victims and survivors within and departed from the JW cult. Oh and to answer your earlier question the number you quoted is not just the US victims. Some with such accounts so sickening it would buckle the strongest man's knees. These people and tender hearts do need support and need to find their voice INDIVIDUALLY. This is usually based on professional advice.

You are actively promoting that confronting one's abuser is the best and more laudible approach thereby insulting those who, due to choice or recommended professional advice, have used other methods to recover from their abuse.

You are calling professional advice to 'remain silent' neanerthal (I'm am not the self proclaimed big foot expert - ahem) and this is based on what credentials you hold?

Congregational elders also used to force ...oops ... 'recommend' confrontation as part of their judicial hearings, are you agreeing with them that this is required? You presume much about the needs of the abused but they are too vulnerable a group to be used by you. Bill Bowen made the same mistake and alienated all those who remained silent for a multitude of personal reasons.

I have no real desire to get into a pissing match with you but I will say I have likely been an abuse survivor advocate longer than you have been reading your self help books. You are better off sticking with being Dear Abby than straying into this territory.

This is a perfect example of self appointed therapists and do-gooders potentially causing more harm than good.

Flipper: Are you personally prepared to pay for the therapy that is likely going to be needed after a 'recommended' confrontation? Each person with the help of PROFESSIONALS need to determine best measures for them to deal with their abuse. Some lambs CHOSE to be silent rather than reliving the abuse in the form of a suit or confrontation.

Your naive recommendation about exposing "alleged' pedophiles is just plain dumb legally and ethically regardless how well intentioned. There are plenty of professional sites in existence to expose tried and sentenced.

Obviously more self help books and episodes of Dr. Phil are needed.

Go crazy offering your version of 'support' but for your and more importantly the safety of vulnerable ones, stay away from therapy and giving advice on that which you have no credentials.

i am a new to posting on this board though i have been actively reading your posts the past while and i thank some of you for the interesting viewpoints that you have verbalized and that i have enjoyed thinking on.

i am still an active jw, in fact an elder of 20 years standing hence my need to limit information about my personal circumstances.

i have served in a number of countries in europe as a pioneer and elder over the past three decades.

Restrangled, you have been nasty, HS has responded but in a highly eloquent fashion. I think that is what pisses so many off, HS is a great intellect who is able to clearly articulate thoughts in wriitng without resorting to a plethora of smilies to make a point. People feel dumb by comparison and thus lash out. The same thing happens in Grade school to the brain of the class and some have never matured emotionally since.

Considering the ilk supporting your attacks/"position" Restrangled, I am more convinced the above is true.
