Since you invited me to semi hijack your thread (can you hijack your own thread?) I'll put in my two cents on the politics is fun thing.

I agree, it's a hoot. Which is why I couldn't resist shooting of my fingers. The one thing I dislike with many political threads is they get very black and white, and I find myself defending positions, that while I hold them, doesn't give the full picture of what I believe. I think other people tend to do the same. Then it just falls apart into a name calling session until the "nazi rule" gets invoked.

As much as I sometimes dislike many of those that practice it, (Kissenger comes to mind) and the results that come about from it (bombing of Cambodia) I think the only way politics on the international stage can be conducted is via realpolitik. Idological stances almost always turn around and bite you in the bum. It's one of the main issues I have with the Bush adminstration. They took an idoglogical stance, and sort of took this "sole remaining superpower" thing a little too much to heart. They could probably have gotten what they wanted with much less grief if they didn't go around irritating their natural allies for no good reason. And mostly when people are discussing politics, it's from an idological standpoint, which probably doesn't map to what really happens that well.

Well, as I hoped was obvious, that was more of a parody/ joke kind of thing, not an honest attempt to set new screening standards. Though I would stand by the suggestion that cowboy hats and dinner plate belt buckles are a leading indicater of potential redneckness Probably could throw CAT baseball caps in there too. Also, like I said, I'm not meaning to diss rednecks, they are my people, and I come from rednecks way back.

And as far as that screening missing McViegh, I couldn't agree more, and is part of the point I was (apparently poorly) trying to make.

If you will notice, I didn't say McVeigh was a cowboy, I said he was a redneck. Rednecks live everywhere, hell, I was one while growing up and into my early twenties Which means I'm pretty good at spotting the breed, and he sure as shotting was a redneck.

In a short term sense, I don't disagree. However, I think it's important to consider the law of unintended consequences. For example, if you were targeting the KKK in Alabama, and you decided to pull over every middle aged white guy and searched them when they left the state, what would you really accomplish? You might catch a few people at the very first, and an occasional complete idiot after that, but that would be extent of the upside. On the down side, you would piss off every middle aged white guy in the state, and perhaps make some of the sympathizers.

Now, I'm not saying that there shouldn't be some extra scrutiny on certain people that fit a profile. On the other hand, you go very far down that path, and suddenly everybody who isn't you starts looking at you like the enemy. The West is going to need friends in the Arab world if we don't want to be dodging bombs all the time, and singling out the people who will most likely be most sympathetic to the West (ie, students, business men, techies, plus the guy at the kwiki-mart) is probably not the best way to win friends.

It's a fine line, and I don't think there are easy answers on this. The "kill em all, and let God sort it out" just ain't going to work no more.

Actually, I don't disagree with you that most of the screening that goes on is silly and ineffecual. I just think that being simplistic in our response to it will do more harm than good. I was two blocks from a bomb going off in the 80's, which scared the hell out of me. Who placed it? White supremacists. It's a big old ugly world, and pretending that bad guys only come in one flavor will just get you blindsided.

finally, guilt at just being a lurker has driven me onto the board.

not that i feel i have much to add, but did want to extend my appreciation for much of the information and insight i have received from many of the posters here.. i suppose some brief synopsis of my story should be forthcoming.

its very similar to many of stories i have read here.. was raised in the truth ,third generation on both sides.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm unsure if I'm being paranoid about identification, or if they really are out to get me. I guess if I learned one thing from the eighties (and one per decade is my usual rate) it was the concept of "plausible deniability". I figure as long as I have that, I'm okay. In regards to faith in the bible, I do have a certain unease that perhaps I'm throwing out a baby with this bathwater. It's just that I've drank so much bathwater that I have to stand on dry land for awhile. I recently read an interesting book that related to this same experience, only for an entire culture. It was A.N. Wilsons book "God's Funeral". It is about the Victorians trying to cope with the facts about geology, and evolution basically disproving at least a literal belief in the bible. It's interesting to read something and realize you are going through the same mental process that most of the rest of the human race went through over a hundred years ago.

I know how you feel. Personally, I sort of don't care what they do, I feel like I've moved beyond their little games and don't give a rat's behind about it. However, it would so upset my mother, and really hurt her, so I want to avoid it if at all possible. Kind of pisses me off that the only effect any action would have would be to hurt someone who is extremely loyal to their belief system.

It has changed a lot. To me it seems they sort of grab a paradigm every 20 years or so and flog it into the ground, then look back a few years and grab some other outdated concept. Well, I am a fan, though I actually screwed up the name. I was aiming for the Golum that according to Jewish legend was created in Prauge. However, not being all that bright, I typed in how I thought it was spelled, looked right, and went with it. After I realized my mistake, I was sort of stuck with it.

Not even going to try the fancy pants quote function, but here’s a shout back to a few of you.

I have no illusions about some of the people in the org. I sort of always thought being in a hall was a lot like living in a small village. Everybody knows everybody else’s business, and it tends to amplify some strange behavior.

And one of things that I always kept going all through my time in the borg were outside interests and friends. I have no idea how I got away with it for so long, but I always did.

I actually can’t take the credit you give me. I lived with the cognitive dissonance for a lot longer than a person more committed to truth and honesty would have. It was simply easier for me, but it finally reached a point where I couldn’t live with myself anymore.

BTW, always enjoy your posts, especially about the org. I swear I’m going to try and avoid getting into political discussions on this board, but if I do, I’ll enjoy sparring with you, since I sit much more on the spawn of satan side, and sort of have romantic fantasies about Hillary Clinton <grin>.

Definitely the weirdness from the org was very wearing. You never knew what bee was going to get into their bonnet next, and since it really wasn’t based on either logic or scripture, you could never anticipate. it.

What I enjoyed was the sort of localized, personal weirdness and obsessions of some of the people in the hall. Amusing as all get out.
