Cape Town, South AfricaCourt saves baby's life
09/07/2008 09:37 - (SA)By Norman Silke, Die Burger Newspaper
Port Elizabeth - Strict religious beliefs nearly claimed the life of a 14-day-old baby at the weekend.
The Legal Aid Board and Port Elizabeth High Court had to intervene on Friday night to save the life of a baby boy.
Dave McGlew of the Legal Aid Board in Port Elizabeth said the baby was born 10 weeks premature on June 23.
He had to have an urgent blood transfusion, but the religious beliefs of his parents, who are Jehovah's Witnesses, did not allow it.
Jehovah's Witnesses keep strictly to the Bible's decree that no form of blood may be eaten. They believe this is applicable also to the storage and transfusion of blood.
McGlew said Netcare Greenacres Hospital, where the baby was being treated, asked for legal aid and the case eventually ended up at the Legal Aid Board.
Court ordered transfusion
According to a statement, advocate Lilla Crouse of the Legal Aid Board had to act quickly to ensure that a judge, a registrar and a stenographer reported to the court at 18:00 to hear an urgent application and a paediatrician was asked to testify.
The court ordered at 19:00 that a blood transfusion should be done.
Parents are required to give permission for a blood transfusion for a minor. McGlew said the High Court, as supreme guardian of all minors, could give consent for a blood transfusion.
He emphasised that the parents did not oppose the application, but could not give consent themselves.
Crouse said: "My heart went out to the child's parents. The couple must've known that, with their decision, they were signing their child's death certificate."
Crouse's statement said that the paediatrician had explained that, without a blood transfusion, the child would have died on Friday night or Saturday morning.
The judge apparently went to a lot of trouble to explain to the parents, whose names were not allowed be publicised, why he ordered the blood transfusion.
'Some people die because of this belief'
Juvenal Coelho, an elder at the Jehovah's Witnesses church in South End, Port Elizabeth, quoted various passages from the Bible that forbade the eating of blood in any form.
According to him, this included the intake of blood through a person's veins.
He said: "Some people die because of this belief, but we believe in a resurrection in God's new paradise.
"What happened will not be held against the parents or the child; it wasn't their decision."

THE PRESS-ENTERPRISE
Riverside, California
Violent end to a life spent making others smile 10:00 PM PDT on Tuesday, July 8, 2008
By TAMMY J. McCOY Hiding behind corners to surprise unsuspecting loved ones as they walked by -- memories of such antics are all that Isabelle Alexandra Jarka's family has left. The 40-year-old mother of two was found dead April 28 inside her Murrieta home, and much of the information about her slaying remains solely within the purview of investigators and prosecutors.
Isabelle's husband, Kelle Lee Jarka, has pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges that make him eligible for the death penalty if convicted. His attorney did not return calls seeking comment.
Jarka, 39, waits in a Riverside County jail cell until his trial. Today would have marked the couple's 19th wedding anniversary. Isabelle Jarka had spent nearly half of her life married to Kelle when Murrieta police found her on the floor of her home. A pool of blood was near her head. Her skull had been hit more than 10 times with a blunt object, according to police and court records.
It was a violent, ugly end to a life spent making others smile.
Her sister, Maritza Trelak, recalls that Jarka occasionally would amuse herself by poking a finger into the middle of the newspaper, scaring the reader.
Her penchant for silly antics did not perish with her. The Jarkas' 12-year-old daughter is following in her mother's footsteps, said Trelak, who spoke on her family's behalf.
Jarka also enjoyed entertaining people at her home, and relatives raved about her cooking, especially Italian cuisine.
She was a gourmet chef who listened to tenor Andrea Bocelli and poured her creative talents into interior decorating and sewing. "She loved providing the best for her family," Trelak said.
Inside the Jarkas' spacious Murrieta home, which was opened to the public for an estate sale, were several bookcases filled with magazines and books devoted to cooking, dieting, fitness, home decorating and ways to improve one's appearance.
The youngest of three sisters, Jarka grew up in La Mirada, a suburb of Los Angeles County, in a home where her mother, Tina Canchola, cooked breakfast, packed their lunches and had dinner ready when their father, Elias, came home from work, said Trelak.
Jarka grew into a warm, compassionate woman, Trelak said.
The family moved to Missouri in the late 1980s because of their father's job. Jarka, a Jehovah's Witness, was living there when she met Illinois resident Kelle.
Kelle Jarka's uncle introduced them during a religious event, said Trelak.
They married July 7, 1989, and honeymooned in Cancun, Mexico, where Isabelle Jarka developed a stomach ailment from the local cuisine, causing the couple to return home earlier than planned, Trelak said.
For their second wedding anniversary, Kelle Jarka gave his wife a diamond tennis bracelet.
She was excited about the gift and had trouble unwrapping the jewelry box, a videotape of the anniversary party shows.
When she saw the bracelet, her face lit up with a big smile. She kissed her husband, a brief peck on the lips, then displayed the bracelet for all to see.
Isabelle wore the bracelet often and planned to pass it on to her daughter, Trelak said.
Kelle Jarka listed the bracelet among the items he reported missing from their home after his wife's death, according to Murrieta police Sgt. Jim Ganley.
In 2007, Jarka learned she was pregnant with the couple's second child.
It was a happy accident, a pregnancy that was not planned but absolutely welcomed, Trelak said.
"And once she found out it was a boy, well that was a source of pure joy to her. It just made her family feel 'complete,'" Trelak said.
Six months later, the Jarkas' infant son was in his parents' master bedroom, police said, not far from his mother when she was beaten to death.

I think is unfortunate for the children and the rest of the family that this had to happen to someone who was so full of life. She didn't deserve this.JJ2014:
Unfortunately, "familicide" is not that uncommon amongst members of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Here is a link to a webpage which starts three pages of summaries of cases in which Jehovah's Witnesses have killed their spouses, parents, siblings, and other family members. That website also has three additional pages of summaries of cases in which Jehovah's Witnesses have killed their employers, employees, friends, and others:

In the following account, I'm using two fictitious names, but the story is real.
Our congregation in New York City wasn't growing, and the elders chose me to give a service meeting talk about "hindering the spirit." I urged anyone who is committing a secret sin to humbly confess to one of the elders. On the weekend a sister approached me and said "Erin" is the one I was talking about and that "Erin" wants me to visit and she will confess. "Erin" was one of the most zealous publishers we had, and she "auxiliary pioneered" nearly every month of every year. Everybody enjoyed her enthusiasm and positive attitude.
I went to see "Erin" and she had a most difficult time trying to confess, and she asked me to come by again when she felt stronger and more able to explain. I said, "Erin, you didn't murder anyone, did you? If you did, even that can be forgiven if you confess." She said it was worse than murder. I told her I didn't think that's possible but that I would call again in a few days when she might feel stronger. She said it was worse because of what it's done to "Jehovah's name." As I started to walk away, she told me to wait and to step inside and have a chair. She tried for about 15 minutes to get out the confession, and she was trembling all the while. Eventually she said, "Brother Toth, I'm not a woman. Before I got baptized, I had a million dollar sex-change operation in South Africa." Erin said his/her original name was Aaron. Aaron said I probably hate him now and want nothing to do with him. He said he would probably be disfellowshiped. I said I didn't know but that I would check with Bethel as to what our next steps should be.
Well, men in the Service and Writing Departments told me "Erin" had to go back to being Aaron. No reverse sex operation was necessary, but Aaron must no longer continue living as a woman. He would also have to be re-baptized since his original baptism was under false pretenses. Aaron resumed living as a man and continued coming to meetings for about a year. Of course, the whole congregation was astir, but eventually things settled down. However, Aaron never got re-baptized. As time went on, he further confessed that as a JW woman he had been shacking up with various men, and now as a man he was having sex with both men and women. He said he was addicted to sex and just couldn't help himself. Eventually he stopped coming to meetings and moved away. We never heard from him again.
I've placed this account in the "supernatural" category since at the time we all believed to the point of being superstitious that the congregation wasn't growing due to "the spirit being hindered," that the spirit moved the elders to lay the matter before the congregation, and that the spirit moved Aaron to confess. It's of interest to note that the congregation did NOT start to grow again immediately after this "hindrance to the spirit" was removed.
Frank
PS: I have to correct the story on one point. I just now remembered that I did see Aaron again about 3 years later. He and I were exactly the same age, but I was shocked when I saw him. His face and neck and especially his hands were etched like those of a very old man. He had aged, it seemed, by at least 20 years.

The New American Standard Bible and the New King James Version are often recommended for accuracy. The New International Version is less literal, but it's good for bringing out the original thoughts in language we can better understand. For smooth reading as well as fairly good accuracy, I also like the New Living Translation.

These are the best of times in many ways. Most of mankind have access to more education than ever before, especially due to the internet. Good books, magazines and newspapers are available to cover every interest, good as well as bad. There are many more millionaires now than ever. We still have dictators and tyrants, but none are equal to Hitler at the peak of his power. Slavery was legal at one time, but not anymore. Gone are the days when child labor and abuse were acceptable. Women and non-whites have rights that formerly were denied to them. We still die from diseases, but not on as large a scale as during the Black plague or the Spanish flu. Modern and holistic medicines produce more cures than ever before, and people in general are living longer than in previous centuries. Hospitals now replace useless arms and legs and revive victims of stroke and heart attacks. The Dark Ages are gone and so are the torture chambers that were so common in that period. People are no longer burnt at the stake for being witches or for believing what others label as heresy.
Sometimes it seems like people are becoming more godless in both belief and actions. But people change as they grow older, often for the better. Guys who in college were the biggest womanizers, boozers and godless fools eventually got married and had kids. Lo and behold, many of them now attend church and work hard to put their kids through college.
Until we come back down to earth, life is scary and society is threatening to bring the world to an end. But that's the way it always has been and always will be until God in his own due time and way steps in to change things.

I remember a Brother King. He was imprisoned in China for like 40 years? . . . I wonder if any one knows what he is up to today?
Actually, he was imprisoned nearly 5 years. Four of those years were spent in solitary confinement. His wife Faye died two years ago, and I believe he died a few years before that. (Don't quote me on that, though. I may have heard wrong, and he might still be alive.)
