BOTR, I understand. I avoided this site for a decade after I knew of its existence. I wanted to live my life and not immerse it in such thoughts. I only particiapte now because I am presumptuous (arrogant? pompous?) to think I can assist others on developing a better way to THINK. Thanks for your thoughts. Nice job.

Same sex marriage legalised in the UK at midnight tonight!!!
by DuvanMuvan intitle pretty much explains it all.
lots of people are getting married at midnight tonight.. what do you guys think?
maybe if anyone gets called on by a jw this weekend you can ask them what they think about it.. im just glad because it shows that religion doesn't define our conscience, that basic human decency can prevail over time and hopefully, these types of gradual but big changes will be present in the wts too in the future .

And while we are speaking about tradition I want to present something I have noted before on this site that should make sentient people think. For over 100,000 years do you know what the average 15-16 year old female was called? Mom.
For over 100,000 years do you know what the average 35 year old human was called? Deceased.
So the 'traditional' marriage arrangement, or whatever it was called a long time ago, by necessity to enable human DNA to be passed on in a manner that would better ensure another generation, was a man (likely much older) to a girl. That was called normal. No one gave it a whit's thought. The past few generations where prosperity (primarily the abundance of calories on a fairly continuous basis) has enabled humans to change 'tradition' is but a very small sliver when compared to human history. So Big Mac, you have neither history, tradition nor current cultural changes on your side. You seem to want things in life to be fixed at the point (which is a very very small segment of human history) where you are most comfortable with them.

BOTR,
As many of us have expressed in previous posts, most of us atheists don't give one single thought to theists in our day to day lives. I used to be one, many of my friends are theists/Christians and I live my life asocially/apolitically and a/religiously. That hasn't anything to do with carrying on a debate on this site. If your atheist friends were debating theists they would get just as frustrated at mantras, beliefs, superstitions and a reliance on discredited 2000 and 3500 year old scrolls. Place the frustration you sense from sone of us in context. I never discuss religion outside of this forum, and I would prefer to never discuss it here, other than perhaps what type of coffin we would choose for the demins of the Borg.

Bigmac,
You almost had me until you equated gay marriage with marrying animals. Get some help, dude. By equating gay marriage with marrying animals you reveal what is in your heart. Sure, you have gay friends. Sure. Rrrrrright. You may have gay acquaintences. No one who knew you thought so little of them would ever want to be your friend.
Marriage, as Xanthippe and DuvanMuvan pointed out, means whatever the culture indicates that it means. Are you so willing to hang on to every other archaic meaning for words? If so we can have a field day with that one. Your thoughts are commonplace in regards the institution and its meaning, but saying they are commonplace doesn't mean they aren't misplaced. They are. Life changes. Cultue and societies evolve. Hop aboard the train.

Xanthippe,
Ditto. Your husband's experience is nearly identical to mine. To be fair, there are good men in the BOE, but they are working in a corrupted system controlled by the dark lords (GB) in Brooklyn or wherever their Death Star currently resides.

And for those right wing religious fanatics in the U.S. who state that allowing gay marriage will harm the family unit as we have known it, this data from "Analyzing Moral Issues (2008):" Countries which have legalized gay marriage have experienced no negative effects to the family unit or to 'traditional' families. As expected.

Snare is right. I was an elder and tried to 'lighten the load' as much as I could. I quickly saw how that strategy wasn't going to work out so well. Are there good men/elders drawn to serve to do the right thing and help? Of course. However, organizations are egoist by nature, which means the organization comes first and last. The men who show that reverence of the Borg's leaders are more likely to become elders and the elders who support the Borg's leaders are much more likely to thrive. Elders who wish to lighten the load will quickly become disillusioned (like me) or fall in line (not like me).
The Borg ultimately is a dark, hate-filled, nasty cult. Its leaders will reflect that sooner or later or go along with those who do, which is essentially the same thing. Trying to fix it or modify it from the lower ranks is impossible. The Borg, as they remind everyone in every magazine, prayer and public talk, is the only channel used by god. They and they alone are the be-all and end-all. Elder who do not align with that are short for the Borg's world.
That is why, whenever anyone on this site asks about JCs or dealing with the BOE, I tell them the same thing every time. The dark side will seek to destroy them and those who belong to them if they do not comply. The sheep will not be treated as sheep. If you are exiting or thinking about exiting or even having doubts, keep them to yourself, exit quiety and quickly and take all that belongs to you with you if possible. You won't like the results otherwise.

Going to a meeting for the first time in a while- love bombing expected
by DuvanMuvan inlong story short, i have to go to the kh on tuesday with my mum and i havent been in at least a month now.
the reaon im going is because when i got my mum to finally let me make my own decision about whether or not i want to be a jw she made me promise that i'd go to the memorial, assemblies and if she had a talk.
she's already told me that people have been asking for me and only a few people in my cong know that i dont think it's the truth.. when i was trying to leave a couple brothers really piled on the "encouragement" and i dread to think about what it will be like when they see me again.

Duvan,
Lots of good advice as usual and as usual you will need to select what is best for you. My 2 cents worth: if you go, smile, be polite and engaging to everyone and do not say anything negative about the Borg. And almost all of them mean well, so there is no need to show angst to the RIF.
JW meetings are mind numbingly boring even when you believe; once you stop beleving they are painful. I hope you can act. If not simply think of something pleasant while you are there or slyly check out the hotties in the congregation sisters. Do anythhing to keep from showing your distaste of what is being taught/said. The Borg are like the creatures from the Invasion of the Body Snatchers; they will rat you out if they see you rolling your eyes at the droning coming from the platform.
You have my respect young one. You are strong. Good luck.

Eloquent and compelling re-count of your friend's story. Thank you. People can hide their hatred of gays behind a religious cloak all they wish, but it is ultimately bigotry in their hearts. If it was simply a religious issue, the discussions could remain within their church/building. Taking their argument out into the public in general is either trying to force their religious views down everyone's throats or their own inner hatred.
