hooberus,

B.
often in discussing christian origins here we have focused on the pagan influences without considering the influence that the pagan mystery religions had upon judaism prior to christianity.
these few excerpts from qumran texts illustrates how by this time forms of judaism had evolved into a more esoteric cult, shifting emphasis from sacrifice and ritual to abstractions like salvation and redemption.
these existing theologies neeeded very little refinement for a paul or james to create a new sect.

avishai,
I don't give a flying you-know-what how the society depicts me. Nobody else in the "real" world cares. So what, everyone else thinks they're a cult, too.
But, what about individual JWs -- all 6,000,000 of them? Do you care how they view you and other ex-JWs?

stillajwexelder,
I think rising above the "eye-for-an-eye / they do it, so can we" attitude would do us all nothing but good. Fighting sensationalism with sensationalism seems counter-productive.

Personally, I can't see meditation in any way being similar to our experiences as JWs. But, that's just my observation.
The cover article to Time magazine a couple months ago was all about meditation and it's benefits. Martin Seligmann in his book "Authentic Happiness" advocates about a half-hour a day for meditation.

Euphemism -- Very good points and I agree with your assesment. I think that controlled venting -- and some occassional sarcasm -- is beneficial. But, I simply believe many go overboard on it.
Here's a solution to the problem: have a very strict, "members-only" section to the forum in which we can vent. Heck, you could even call it a "members-only venting section"! Everything else would be more palatable for the JWs.

concerned mama,
I wish EVERYONE on this site could read what you just wrote.
I ran into this site (and others) when I was experiencing my year of doubts which finally gave me the courage to leave this religion. Needless to say, I found some of the topics discussed, and the manner they were discussed, to be entirely distasteful.
Finding out the "truth" about this religion is an unbelievable shock to the system. But, when those "truths" are presented in some of the ways they are here that shock is utterly unbearable.
Something to consider.

Simon,
First off, by no means do I want to insinuate that all the topics on this site are sensational in nature. They are not and, overall, it's a great site; very helpful.
But, I am tending to disagree with the "considering what some have been through" argument. Sure, some people have been through sh....er...hell . All the same, is lashing out at the Society the answer? The real answer? I don't know.
Perhaps I'm just being overly serious. Perhaps. But, here's something to think about: the more sensational and "angry" the topic, the more we appear to be what the Society has depicted us as.
The question is: is the anger and sensationalism, the existence of which is definite, helping others and ourselves -- or is it superflous to our aims?
Again, just a thought. I could be wrong.

How many here meditate? What is your program of meditation like? How often? With a group or by yourself? Do you feel it has had a positive effect on your mind and physical health? How has it affected your outlook and spiritual development (if you believe in that sort of thing)?
Questions, questions, questions! I'm all about the questions!
