I'm going to distance myself from my original statements by saying that there is a difference between saying someone has stupid beliefs and saying that they are stupid.
And, yes, some beliefs are stupid.

do you consider most people as simple sleepwalkers through life not paying much attention to reason, logic, science, history and a desire to understand?

Sometimes I feel like Dr. Frankenstein.
People, I was wrong to title this thread the way I did and my use of the word "stupid" was ill chosen. (I said this before but it seems to have gotten ignored in the proceedings)
Notice I did not call any single person in particular here as "stupid" (unlike some rebuttels toward me). Why did people automatically conclude that I was talking about them? I don't know. As a matter of fact, I believe that this site has members whose intelligences I admire; people I have learned quite a bit from.
Really, I don't wish to partake in my own creation any longer. Can I kill it?

what is the belief of jdubs about dinosaurs now?
my daughter came home the other night from her grandma(jw) saying that she wouldn't let her watch a show about dinosaurs on discovery channel because what they were showing is not true.
dinosaurs were not meat eaters.
Remember the old green Bibles with the map in the front cover showing a brontosaurus smack dab in the middle of Mesopotamia?

Stacey,
Brad if people don't agree with you then they're wrong every time.
That is absolutely not true. There are many areas where, while I do not agree with other people's opinion, I do respect them and their position. For example, I'm currently having a lively debate with a fellow ex-JW who buys into the "prime mover" argument for God's existence. Although I disagree with him I believe his position has intellectual merit.
Simply because I make certain categorical claims about particular matters does not mean that that same general judgements to everything I come into contact with. Got it?

The Watchtower doesn't talk about dinosaurs all that much. They had an Awake article a few years ago that was very vague about the subject. I remember the subheading in the article entitled, "When Did They Live?" and no geochronological evidence was presented one way or the other! They simply said, to the effect, "Jehovah created them on the fifth day of creation" -- [insert raucus laughter].

Ah, Brummie,
You wish everyone believed like you do, thats the point "Oh if everyone wasnt so stupid and believed like I do the world would be so much more interesting" Lol, I'd rather read the phonebook.
I will gladly pay you or anyone else $100 if you can provide documentation of me ever writing or saying that.
Rather than the phone book, might I suggest a book on.....oh, never mind.

Brummie,
See, it's comments like yours:
greatteacher to think everyone will one day drop all their beliefs and become great minds like you and Logan is perhaps the most stupid belief of all.
that just make no sense whatsoever when viewed objectively.
Nowhere did I or greatteacher state that people will simply one day drop all their irrational beliefs as one would quit a job. It's a process, much like losing faith in a cult -- it doesn't happen overnight and it isn't always pretty.
Why do you (and others) persist in false representation of what I said? I do NOT consider myself a "great mind." Good heavens, if I haven't made that clear enough...

For a nice summary of why astrology, tarot-cards, new-ageism, creationism etc. are "stupid" beliefs, check out the following link -- www.skepdic.com

sunnygal,
I strongly object to you lumping new age thinking and astrology into that grouping.
I most definitely would put them in the category of "stupid beliefs."
Ouch,
Bradley
