How many of these books have your read?

Two. I've read both of Franz's books. They were a game-changer for me.

SFPW, they were hardly propaganda and vicious lies. ISOCF started of like Franz was a grumpy old man, but the rest of the book was just as well written as CoC. They were point of view books that gave clear evidence as to why Franz maintained that view. While most JW books are point of view books as well, they are presented as absolute truth, until new absolute truth replaces it, that is. Franz never lied about the purpose of his books, that certain facts could be wrong based on his limited experience, or that he should believed. Instead he encouraged you to make your own opinions based of evidence you learn from not only his book, but both JW and secular information.

A question about shunning-your input appreciated

i have been inactive for 5 years now.

lately i am being treated more and more as if i were disfellowshipped, which i am not.

do any of you know of anything, in writing, that is encouraging members to curtail any and all association with former members who are no longer active?.

I haven't heard anything lately, but I quickly got the cold shoulder as I've become inactive over the past 6 months. There was a brief elders meeting right before I went inactive to see how the elders could help me re-qualify as a servant again. I told them I just needed more time. With that time I learned TTATT and started doing less and less. On paper, I have a few hours of informal witnessing, but honestly I'm inactive. The time I count, although real, wouldn't be considered time by a JW because although it's spiritual conversation, it's not JW propaganda.

How many Kingdom Halls have you went to in your lifetime?

for me, i think i went to 20 kingdom halls in my lifetime.

just a guess.

I've been to about 15, give or take a few. I used to give outgoing talks, so I got around a bit. I do miss the days of giving talks at other congregations. I really enjoyed public speaking.

Jam, I agree. It all comes down to the individual. The UN was a big one for me. I thought it was a downright lie. I even convinced myself that the letters and articles were fabricated by apostates to draw me away from Jehovah -- that is until I found official documentation from the UN on their website stating the dates that the WTBTS was a NGO member. After that the floodgates opened for me.

We can only offer suggestions, but when it comes down to it, we have to tailor TTATT to the individual we are sharing it with.

its an arena for jaded athiests to bash anything christian or god related.

Cross, I have to attest to the usefulness of this forum. JWN has helped me immensely. I'm still not entirely sure what I believe as far as God and such. But everyone on here has helped me to see that this is okay. We've been lied to so much in our lives that we can't sort it all out over night. In the past six months I've went from ministerial servant to doubting to atheist to sure of my doubts, back to belief in God and a whole host of other emotions. Learning the truth about the truth can make you feel like you are going crazy. The people here have helped me to cope. You should give us a chance.

i re-read it after someone posted to it and brought it back on active topics and it was kind of prophetic in a way ... well, i had the 5 years part right if nothing else:.

it would be nice to visit the site (or whatever one is around then) in 5 years time to let people know how we're doing and find only a few of the same people still around.

I echo the sentiments of smiddy, etude, and others. Thank you for your sacrifices of time, money, and all the effort that you have put into this site. Without saying a word, the resources you have provided here have saved me from the JW cult. And for that, I will always be grateful to you. If you ever find yourself on the US Gulf Coast (Alabama/Mississippi/Florida panhandle), I'd love to share a pint with you.

The UN source is available directly from the UN website. Click on advanced search and search for watchtower bible tract pdf. The official statement should be one of a few documents. This way, instead of getting it from apostates, you are getting it directly from the mouth of the wild beast.

What was your "Aha!" moment?

for me it was when i learned that gb makes their decisions by 2/3 majority vote, not by direction of holy spirit..

Hortenzie, I say I never believed, but I guess I meant this more as an adult. I was raised as a JW, so as a young child I accepted my mother's teaching as absolute fact. How could my mom and everyone else I knew be wrong? As I grew into an adult and began to use my powers of reason, I stopped believing but reasoned that all religions have mis-truth in them. Why leave this one for another? So although I didn't believe anymore (around the age of 18/19, I'm now 29), I continued on as a JW, making the sacrifices that they make. Now that I realize my original reasoning was only the tip of the iceberg, it's becoming too much of a burden to continue on as a JW.

I'm fixing to read Pt 3, but I will attest to the fact that we are scared to learn the truth.

When I first visited JWFacts, I was scared to look at the Wt CD-ROM for fear that the quotes were truthful. But I had to know the truth. I had to know if apostates were twisting words, or if it was the GB that were twisting words. When I finally verified the quotes, I felt sick to my stomach because the apostates were speaking truth, the GB was not.

I'm still dealing with the mental repurcussions of that fateful day. And I found out that it's taking a toll on my blood pressure.

Questions During Meetings...Grounds for Suspicion?

with so many meetings during the week, it seems like the opportunity to raise questions would be rich.

i just wondered how probing questions are handled in most kingdom halls.

are they taken as an indication of an inquisitive mind or a potential source of stumbling for weak members?

Yep, the only ones allowed to ask questions are the elders. You can only make comments at the meetings. I've seen some people make some pretty off the wall comments. Usually the elders will get a weird look like they don't know what to do, thank the person for their "expression", and then deal with the matter after the meeting in the intimidation chamber ("back room").
