i've always wanted so much to know the true god and to do his will, but it seems i struck out at the kh.

I personally don't think anyone can Biblically show that membership to any visible church meets Christ's definition of His Church.

If you are joined to the Head, you are a member of the body. That's it. That's all.

However, believers meet together to build each other up. (I think some Christians here do that online, which qualifies in my book! It's nice to see people in person, tho'.)

Jesus told a parable about a man sowing wheat in a field, and his enemy came at night and sowed tares (weeds) in it. The young wheat and young weeds looked similar. They were left until harvest for sorting. Jesus was warning that even among groups of believers, there would be found those who really were not actually followers of Christ. So you can't put your faith in "church membership".

You're a Christian if your shepherd is Christ. Read John 10:1-5. I love verse these parts: " ...He calls his own sheep by name... the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice."

I knew some folks from Australia back when we were in Japan, and also from 'way back while I was in college. We even hosted some girls from Australia for a few nights while I was in high school. Boy, was I glad to have already studied "Strine" from a book I had run across earlier! As a result, I was able to understand them more than most people could. Now, after this simple lesson, Americans too might be able to go watch "Crocodile Dundee" and finally understand all the jokes you missed...

"Let Stalk Strine!"

Air Fridge: A mean sum, or quantity; also, ordinary, not extreme. As in, The air fridge person; the air fridge man in the street.

Baked Necks: A popular breakfast dish. Others include emma necks; scremblex; and fright shops.

Cheque Etcher: Did you obtain. As in, "Where cheque etcher hat?" or "Where cheque etcher dim pull, son? Where cheque etcher big blue wise?"

Letty Mare Fit: Let him have it. As in, "Letty mare fit tiffy wonsit. Zarf trawly zonier kid."

Mare chick: Effects produced by the assistance of supernatural powers. As: Black mare chick; mare chick momence; "Laugh, your mare chick spell is airfree ware."

Numb Butter; Jessa (synonyms): Only. As in: "They're numb butter buncher drongoes," or "He's jessa no-hoper."

Orpheus Rocker: Psychopathic; neurotic; psychotic; slow; quick; eccentric; absentminded; unstable; imaginative; introspective; creative; or in any way different.

Retrine: Making an effort. As in, "How to speak Strine without retrine."

Sex: Large cloth bags used as containers for such things as potatoes, cement, etc. As in: sex of manure, corn sex, etc.

Uppendan: To and fro; backward and forward. As in, "She walked uppendan Flinner Street farairs an then she finey got a cabbome to Cannerbry."

Would Never: Do not have. As in, "You would never light woodgermite?" or "Ar would never glue."

Zarf Trawl: Because, after all. As in, "Zarf trawl Leica nony doomy Bess," or "Zarf trawl wee rony flesh and blood wennit Saul boiled down."

...Once when I was utterly overwhelmed I suddenly had a certain picture in my head: I was alone on a stage, but I knew I wasn't really alone. It was absolutely quite; couldn't see any audience, since it was nearly pitch black. There was only a tiny shaft of light filtering thru some smoky air, landing only where I was standing. There was a tiny little string dangling from somewhere above, hanging just where I could reach up and hold on to it. All of my energy was spent in only standing in this light, and only hanging onto that little string... and I found peace.

It was a metaphor for me, about perseverence and faith--not doing something "heroic and strong", but merely resting (Matt. 11:28!!) as I held onto that string (somehow even being held up by it!). Whenever I get overwhelmed again, I remember this mental image. And I wait again...

How many of you have had panic/anxiety attacks at the KH or...

i cried through a lot of meetings at my second congregation while i was still in good standing.

i couldn't stop myself; i'd just cry quietly.

That is totally unimaginable!!!! I cannot, cannot understand such cruelty. No wonder the tears and panic.

What a lovely woman to try to help.

If God blessed her for such kindness, she's probably out of the KH now.

I'm beginning to understand better the story of the Good Samaritan through your experience...

(BTW, the pharisee and priest possibly were afraid to "soil" themselves because of legal requirements for keeping ceremonially "kosher", since the poor guy looked dead. Ceremonial "uncleanness" for touching a dead body was a condition that could be changed only after a seven-day purification period--not an enduring condition, but somewhat inconvenient! NU 19:11-22)

Jesus commended the Samaritan(!), not these "kosher" Jews. The Samaritan was more like God, more theologically correct than the ones who supposedly remained "ceremonially kosher".

(... And didn't the pharisees plot to kill Jesus after he had (horrors!) healed on a Sabbath?...! Same principle here.)

I truly hope you are finding better friends near you these days, Beryl!

the wt admits that jesus was king as far back as the year 33 c.e., but he supposedly didn't do much while just sitting on a throne at god's right hand and ruling god's "kingdom of the son of his love" (col 1:13).

my favorite author thru the years has been cs lewis.

i read narnia in hs, and loved the last book the best (last battle).

I loved "The Necklace" as well. It somehow reminds me of the short story "The Gift of the Magi" by O'Henry.

(BTW, Celia/Farkel, the link to the piano piece was on a thread dealing with Roman Polanski's movie, and the controversy over him/it. I clicked onto that page, and of all the music choices, I chose the Danse Macabre. All I can say is, God really lets the sun shine on the just and unjust... ;) what an amazing gift for a grumpy guy... ) :)

Oh yeah! Harry Potter books! I love them. Love Grimm's fairytales, too.

...actually, I like lots of these mentioned. Some I haven't read, but only heard of (Keats, Potok, eg.). This list makes me want to get to the library!

PS http://www.4literature.net has lots of books available for online reading. (But I think it'd be hard to read a large novel online; I think this kind of thing is nicer for shorter works like short stories and poetry.)

This is a very interesting subject.

I think if JWs were to individually find neighbors in trouble, they would probably react to help them out. But I have serious doubts about what would happen if a group of them were together--they'd be constrained to be kind, in my opinion.

It's a toss-up for me. Although there are some reports here of giving assistance, I'm still skeptical. Is there anyone, anywhere, who is not a JW, who has reported on the actions of those in Bethel that day?

I would HOPE that they did right.
