The most Disturbing Story in the Bible
by fulltimestudent ini posted elsewhere about dr. james tabor's take on the book of revelation as re-write of an earlier non-christian document.
but in browsing his site i was reminded of an early biblical story in genesis that essentially throws so much jewish and subsequent christian thinking out of the window.. .
can your mind handle the concept of yahweh standing in front of you, with a human body like yours, eating, drinking.

Atheists know more about the bible!
by Comatose ina newly minted atheist, she uses her youversion bible app to try to persuade people away from the christianity she grew up in.. .
i know of a lot of atheists who have come to their nonbelief by actually reading the bible rather than just the fluffy stories they choose to tell you about in church, she said.
reading the full story with all its contradictions and violence and sexism, it should make you think, is this really what i believe in?

Growing up dubbish I found it hilarious that any christians I bumped into never seemed to know their bibles.
As an atheist I find it frightening that most believers don't know their holy books.
Perspective's a bitch.

Well, Stauros how in the world did you derive these conclusions from what you read? At least give explanation as to how you did.
LC.
(Not what your conclusions are - but how you derived them). If it's a good enough question to be asked...
"We are not responsible for the sins of our fathers, sons or daughters, ect. ect."
(Exodus 20 v 5, 6)

So I got engaged...
by frogonmytoe in...to my boyfriend, we're going to have one of those weddings ('gay' weddings to the straights).. although my jw family know i'm gay, and not going to meetings, only one of my sisters has sussed the situation.
but i think after 3 years it's about time i told them.
especially if sometime in the future i'll turn up with a (gay) wedding ring.

"(the bible is not one book)"I know. It's a bible. I was answering your question: "We do not throw away books and dismiss their contents simply because they do not claim to be inspired, right?"
"Would you throw out the subject OF a book, if you found out there were errors in that book?" Perhaps not out of hand, no.
But if the book was the ONLY reason I had for thinking the subject was anything other than make-believe... AND the book didn't just contain errors, it contained outright lies designed to maintain control over the people who believed the lies therein: I would, I do.
"True." Well, ok, I guess that's that.
"I cannot KNOW without knowing from Christ. I can reason, I can think, I can ponder, I can believe... but I KNOW when He confirms something or tells me something. Be that in words or in spirit." It seems odd that we can think, ponder and reason our way into knowing all sorts of wonderful things... But that process isn't enough to know anything about "The Truth".
Just plain weird for god to give us such brilliant tools for understanding and then make understanding "The Truth" such a counter-intuitive struggle.
"However, if something is not against love, and you do not know that it is not true, then why have a problem with it?" I don't, I've a problem with all the hatred of various sorts that goes with it. And there exists no rational way to separate the two.
Also, a side-note from earlier - "The bible is not the word of God". Do you object to any part of the bible being refered to as the word of god? Because Jesus called at least some scripture something pretty close (Mark 7 v 13) (Matt 15 v 6) depending on your translation. (I ask because I at no point capitalized it, so no John 1 v 1 mix up in meaning or whatever... if you follow me? I'm curious that you seem so concerned by it)
Peace back at ya.

I know the bible is full of lies and error (though I'm glad we agree).
You are right, I don't throw away a book simply because it does not claim to be inspired, I throw away a book if it contains things I know to be lies... I find sifting through lies for truth unrewarding after spending most of my life involved in the task on some level.
I asked how someone could know the lies from the "truth", or "Truth" if you prefer, without christ telling them. (your reply seemed to be "ask him")
Simply reading the bible and believing only those parts which are loving would be nice, but hardly seems like much of a test of validity or truth. (Assuming testing them against love and christ are as you say - the same)
I do find it curious that you say to test the inspired scriptures against uninspired accounts of things he is supposed to have said... which I guess you also test against "the spirit", or love? (If so it comes full circle?)
Shalom back at ya.

I guess some people love the truth more than "The Truth".
Some love their family more than the truth.

Tammy: You seem to be saying that god could inspire something full of error?, or COULDN'T inspire something inerrant.
If we take your definition of what "scripture" actually is (though I've no idea how you decide that) - and then we take your definition of what "inspired" really means... Are those "scriptures" inerrant?
Help me out here...
(And it seems [to me] that the warning in revelation is there so that an inspired and inerrant book stays that way? [By book I mean revelation, not the bible]... So do you believe that the bible would be inerrant if the writings were still in their original form? If not, how do you chose between the writings?)
How does one choose without christ telling them? (I'm not actually sure how to describe the direction you say you get without sounding flippant or mocking, but I guess you know what I'm asking)
Salaam back at ya.
