is it my imagination or do some witnesses overthink things a bit too much?
although this is most likely meant as a joke, it well illustrates jw thinking on a lot of matters.

my elderly father wishes for me to be his sole beneficiary when he dies.
he doesn't have much money, but i am not inclined to want my half brother and sister (ages mid 20's) to get anything.
they never call or come to visit him, and have made it clear he is just their birth father.
When my father had his will done it cost about $50 but it was a cheap lawyer. You could probably expect to spend around $300.

I'm not sure about the laws in your state, but in Ontario parents are not obligated to leave anything to their children. If there is no will present they would probably get equal shares though. I'd recommend getting a lawyer to draw up a proper will. Sometimes the wording can change everything. I know of one family where the two daughters got almost nothing in favor of a charity that chose to contest their fathers will because of the way it was worded. They lost out on a lot of real estate, and basicly could only take personal effects.

most europeans have more than a little difficulty in telling a us accent apart from that of a canadian one.
it's a bit like ozzies and kiwi's, until you've met a few, the differences aren't that apparent to the untrained ear.
some folk even think that the us and canada are simply interchangeable terms for what is basically the same place.
I wasn't aware that Americans had a problem entering Canada, but I used to be refused entry into the USA from Canada because of a minor marijuana conviction in 1977. ($1.00 street value). Last month I made my first visit to the USA in many years.

i saw my niece last night and she told my wife, daughter and me that since she's been reinstated, she's only gone to a few meetings and part of a special assembly day.
she complained how everyone still avoids her and how people just aren't nice in the "truth".
she's totally bored at the meetings and doesn't want to go out in service ever again.
I know of one girl who only goes to meetings and remains a witness because her grandmother buys her clothes and other things. None of the other grandchildren, who are not JW's, get anything from her. (You can imagine the bitterness this has caused between the siblings) So she is essentially being bribed to be a witness. I wonder how many others are in for similar reasons.
The last few years at assembles, it seems the vast majority of people getting baptized are raised in JW families, and probably feel forced into it. I've seen so many leave once they reach 18 or so. The few I have seen reinstated never became 'zealous' witnesses. They seem to come back only to restore family ties, and then slowly become inactive again.
I think once many older witnesses die off we'll see the org decrease at a much greater rate, except perhaps in poorer countries where access to the internet and information may not be as readily accessible.
That is, unless they come up with some better lies with which to mislead people.

in my experience with elders in the past i was counseled for many things, most trivial and stupid, but some were serious issues.
one thing i noticed was that the elders always seemed to approach issues with some preconceived ideas, or they would try to read between the lines rather than actually listen to what i was saying.
others i know have had similar experiences.
I sure wasn't referring to the former elder I had some beers with last week! He was one of the good ones! Which probably explains why he's no longer there.
As for the tall blonde, I'll let him know if I find one. That is, after some quality assurance testing of course.

One thing I noticed was that the elders always seemed to approach issues with some preconceived ideas, or they would try to read between the lines rather than actually listen to what I was saying. Others I know have had similar experiences. A few elders I knew were skilled tradesmen, but most were unskilled workers or cleaners. I have nothing against those lines of work, I've done some of these myself, but they don't qualify someone to offer counsel on serious mental, emotional, or spiritual issues. All the elders ever seemed to do was parrot something anyone could find in their own watchtower library. When you combine that with their haughty attitudes, I felt that they weren't qualified to kiss my left asscheek.
Did anyone ever really meet an elder that was actually qualified to give counsel on things like child abuse, depression, marital problems, etc? Has anyone ever heard of an elder who actually had enough initiative to go out and get some REAL training on these matters? Or are they all just flying by the seat of their pants?

simon, i have to also hand it to another one of our 'newest' members, who has not only been instrumental at keeping ol' rayzorblade on-line, but helping me, as well as a few others in-the-know when it comes to computer wizardry.
if you haven't met iiz2cool, trust me, he's an excellent person, and great to be around.
walter: thanks for your kind and generous assistance with my computer (others too...you know who you are) and assisting me with getting on to the new server.
