If they had genuine, sincere concern for people they wouldn't need a printed article to remind them. It would come naturally, without even thinking about it.

just had to share some lovely points from this week's service meeting.
the article "imitate jehovah's goodness" has the following paragraph:toward unbelievers: one way we can imitate jehovah's goodness is by showing sincere concern for those not related to us in the faith.
(gal 6:10) showing goodness in practical ways can have a positive effect on how they view jehovah's witnesses and the message we bear.. .
If they had genuine, sincere concern for people they wouldn't need a printed article to remind them. It would come naturally, without even thinking about it.

Well, it's after 3 in the afternoon and the power FINALLY came back on! Maybe I can unplug my laptop from the truck now. But we're still expecting rolling blackouts for a couple of days.
Getting home from work yesterday was NUTS! I walked for 3 hours - I think it's about 15 miles to get home. But there were some nice people along the way. One Starbucks opened a stand and were handing out glasses of ice water to people. One guy bought out the entire stock of a store's Freezies and started handing them out to passers-by. I did my cooking on a camp stove when I got home.
It was all kind of fun, except for the trouble getting online.
Walter
With this blackout going on, do you think the JWs will go out in service full force on Saturday saying it's another sign of the end?
I'll keep my garden hose ready.

Are you sure the Legislative building at Queens Park was on fire? I work there and didn't notice anything. Maybe it happened after I left at 4:30.
It's Friday morning and still no power here. I'm running my computer off my truck battery.

at the district convention i attended, i had an excellent view of the stage.
especially those contribution boxes.
every so often, paticularly near the end of the morning and afternoon sessions, those sisters were doing the contribution box walk.
It's not only at conventions but at the KH as well. At the KH there are contributions for the worldwide work, kingdom hall building fund, and for the local congregation too. In my last hall they instituted a renovation fund for an upcoming renovation. No, they don't pass collection plates like some other religions do. Instead they just place numerous donation boxes in prominant locations, and nag people from the platform to donate.
You're right about the creature worship too. When I was new in the org I was sometimes impressed with these ones who pioneered for 30 years, or spent so many years in bethel. But as I got to know them better I found many of them probably COULDN'T do anything else. Some lacked the skills to have a real life in the real world. Many of these pioneers were notorious for mooching meals rather than getting a skill and a job, and many had the habit of asking for "pioneer rates" when doing business with another JW.
Uh oh! Am I beginning to rant? Sorry.
Walter
since before a witness gets baptized, they are told to "be no part of this world".
that is beaten into everyone's head.
now that you're not a jw or are on the way out, how does being part of the "world" feel?
How does being part of the world feel? Something like this:
It's nice to have the free time, freedom of thought, freedom of expression, freedom of association, without guilt.

this old fart is now officially 39 years old.
this old fart will be over the hill next year!
ah, life!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY YIZUMAN!!!
Don't do anything I wouldn't do! Walter
Cake in the face? Sure, I've done it and would do it again. Before I was a JW it was a regular thing at birthday parties that the birthday boy/girl would wear their cake! Sometimes it even got eaten off the person.

it is evident that publishers are growing in the us branch, but pioneers have not kept pace.. consider the km reports from january this year:.
2002/03 service year (pubs include all pioneers).
sep - pubs: 971,346 pioneers: 88,341. oct - pubs: 972,450 pioneers: 91,101. nov - pubs: 973,067 pioneers: 89,083. dec - pubs: 895,241 pioneers: 90,654. jan - pubs: 986,419 pioneers: 89,325. feb - pubs: 983,963 pioneers: 89,251. mar - pubs: 1,003,431 pioneers: 87,878. apr - pubs: 991,499 pioneers: 87,377. may - pubs: 992,412 pioneers: 86,884. jun - pubs: 963,000 pioneers: 84,900. figures for jun are approximates as i only glanced at the sep km and do not have it yet.. but there is a clear indication that despite all the talks to do more and pioneer, and the aug km talk on.
And the decrease shows that it's not only the hour requirement that was an obstacle to pioneering. The requirement was lowered from 90 hours a month to 70 a few years back, but the numbers are still decreasing. But then, when I pioneered many were lying about the number of hours they got anyway. I did sometimes. I guess there's just less interest in pioneering now, or maybe more people are seeing the org for what it is.
I'd be interested in seeing some other statistics. Too bad they're not available. Something like:
How many minutes per hour of service time are spent in coffee shops?
What percentage of the JW's that leave every year become members of this board?
What percentage of JW's really believe in the org compared to the number that are in because they feel trapped?
