our dc coming up this weekend, i hated them and the only thing that kept me going ,was the reward of booze at the end of each day.my then wife, zelous judgemental pioneer, you know the type, not only droned on about my drinking, but about everyones drinking, a real barrel of laughs not.
anyway, one year we went to another dc, in newcastle, all seemed to be going well, until lunch.we went over to a hotel for lunch,i ordered my fresh orange and food, a few minutes later, the local jw,s arrived for lunch, they had all pr-ordered drinks, alcoholic drinks, and not one drink but many !!!
they were buisy getting boozed up for the afternoon session, way to go, i was about to join them, when my wife told me " dont even think about it ", anyway she was outraged, but there they were ,with thier little convention badges, men and women, young and old, getting merry, they dont even do that here in scotland, !!!.
I never drank at the Newcastle assembly, but the one year it was across the river at Gateshead stadium (1995) I'd just turned 18 and the choice of a pub right next to the assembly site or sitting in the baking sun bored out my skull was too much.....
Drinking too much is frowned on round here, but many people do it and as long as nobody complains or gets stumbled then a blind eye is turned.
its about a year since i was last on here so i thought i'd come and say hello and let you know how i'm doing.
i think my last post was announcing that my children, emily and christopher, had just been born over 3 months premature.. life has been a rollercoaster since then, emily spent 3 1/2 months in hosptital and christopher spent 5 months.
they were very very ill for a long time, and christopher in particular was very unstable often needing to be resuscitated several times a day until just a few weeks before he was discharged.

They were very very ill for a long time, and Christopher in particular was very unstable often needing to be resuscitated several times a day until just a few weeks before he was discharged. They both have a lot of ongoing problems because of this and so I've had to leave work to become their fulltime carer. Christopher has a trachy so can't be left unattended with anyone other than me, Claire, or trained medics, as well as development delay and movement problems. He is expected to go on to develop cerebral palsy. Emily has movement problems and is effectively quadraplegic. Both are oxygen dependant and have brain injuries.
Both are vey happy babies and spend a lot of time laughing. Christopher finds every new thing he sees as hilarious, and at the minute particualarly likes watching Tom and Jerry. Emily loves her cuddles and being held.

soft sentences for child killers has sparked prison protest plans.. around 100 people are expected to turn up at the demonstration outside low newton prison in county durham, where notorious inmate tracey connelly has been caged for her part in the death of her son, baby p.. the protest by the abused babies and children (abc) foundation was prompted by revelations connelly, her boyfriend steven barker and his brother jason owen have launched appeal bids against their sentences.. peter connelly, baby ps real name, died after suffering months of abuse.. haringey social services, doctors and the metropolitan police all failed to remove him from his mothers care despite evidence he was being abused.. tracey was ordered to be held indefinitely a minimum of five years after pleading guilty to a charge of causing or allowing the death of a child or vulnerable person and was transferred to low newton prison after receiving death threats in styals womens prison, cheshire.. as it emerged connelly had lodged an appeal, the abc foundations organiser mandy francis, 52, said: we were disgusted with the sentences handed out to these killers and then they decided to add insult to injury by appealing against their sentences.. we want to help get peter the justice he deserves and for the government to realise that people are fed up with the paltry sentences handed out by the courts in cases like this.
life should mean life.. the abc foundation, who will stage their protest on october 4, are also furious connelly, barker and owen could be given new identities for their protection.. barker, who was also convicted of raping a two-year-old girl, was jailed for life with a minimum of 10 years for the rape and a 12-year sentence for peters death.
I'm off work this week or I would have seen the demonstration, I drive past Low Newton prison every day to get to work.
If its true that Barker has converted in prison does that mean that somebody preached to him while inside? And if he starts preaching while inside the only people available for him to do so will be others who are in for similar offences to his own... Assuming that jws are one of the only groups inside prison that requires its members to actively seek to recruit others, could this eventually give a disproportionate amount of people like Barker becoming JWs when they are eventually released?
i've been reading the topic about how garrido met his wife while in prison, and the discussion about how prison inmates are preached to by jw's.. has anyone done any research into how many people claiming to be jw's there are in prison?
in the uk it should be quite easy to find out because of the freedom of information act.
it could even be broken down to how many are in dispersal prisons (and so for much more serious offences), and how many are covered by rule 43 (segregated for their own protection), and how this measures as a total of the prison population.. the last time i looked it up, there was 1 jw to approx 300 people in the uk.
For an inmate to be classed as a member of a particular faith they have to fill in a declaration at reception (In which they can put down whatever they want), but this must be verified by the prison chaplain. This was brought in to stop inmates making spurious claims to be of a particular religion to be able to have more rights/time out of cell/ect. This is explained in PSO4550 ch1 par1.8 on the prison service website. We know there are arrangements for witnesses to go into prisons and visit people like these.
Carla, I was more thinking of what sort of things JWs got sent to prison for. Before I was df'd, I only knew of 2 witnesses that got sent to prison. Both were for sexual offences. If these people were recruiting new JWs in prison, then the only ones they could have contact with would also be in for sexual offences because of rule 43 and being segregated from ordinary prisoners for their own protection. Whether an inmate is a jw when convicted, or converted while inside it makes now difference to the fact that they would be in congregation after release.
I wonder what the proportion of people in prison for sexual offences who are witnesses compares with the proportion of people who are witnesses in the outside community.

Those figures are from 10 years ago, and only show data for the prison population as a whole rather than seperated for offence and seriousness. Has anyone ever looked into that?

Blacksheep, where do you get your prison population figures from? The total prison population for England and Wales is over 84,000 as of last week. Or do you mean the dispersal population or r43 population?

The last time I looked it up, there was 1 JW to approx 300 people in the UK. How do you think this would compare to the ratio held in prisons?
