No one understands all the consequences of quantum physics.

Nobel prize winner eugene wigner said “While a number of philosophical ideas may be logically consistent with present quantum mechanics, materialism is not.”

I certainly do not believe quantum physics as presently understood gives irrefutible evidence for a higher power. Nor do I endorse all views in the video. I believe in keeping an open mind. There are many diffent views on this matter and to prematurely negate one view because it doesn't line up with one's worldview is quite rash.

Being a true skeptic is not only being dubious about things we don't agree with it is also questioning the status quo. It is questioning the establishment. Scientific thought has changed many times over the years and will continue to do so. To accept unquestioningly that current establishment thought is right in everything but perhaps a few details is quite short sighted.

Can anyone explain love?

we have had a variety of theist vs atheist debates on this forum.

usually, it devolves (or evolves?

) into a debate on what can or cannot be proven.. so let's step back a second.

Good points flying.

Most humans intuitively know that love isn't caused by chemicals released by the brain. These chemicals are correlated but are not causitive.

I would illustrate it like this. Suppose a skeptic remains unconvinced that the images appearing on a television set are coming from somewhere else. He believes they are due to the internal material components of the television set only. He messes with some parts and the images become fuzzy which strengthens his belief that they are only due to the physical components in the set. He moves another peice and a line begins to run thru the image. He cuts a peice out and all images stop. Because of his experimentation he now is completely convinced that the images that appear on the television screen were due solely to the material components and nothing else is necessary for them. As we know he only has part of the picture. Those images were streaming in from some other place but the physical components were correlated but did not create the images.

How to accept the actions of the Old Testament God

how are we able to do this.. this is not an attempt to stir the pot or cause confusion but i was sitting here thinking of all the really horrid things that the old testament god did to people.

when i was a jw i just purposely put it to the back of my mind always trying to make an excuse.

when i was in field service and someone would ask me about it i would just change the subject.. however i have been reading alot of info lately here about how wonderful jesus is and how he is a direct representation of what god the father would be.

If a christian has an open mind he will have to agree that how Jesus described God is quite different from how God is represented in the OT. The problem is when someone takes the bible to be infallible. Then he tries to completely reconcile what Jesus said about God with Jehovah from the OT. This can not be done.

Cofty, I have no desire to engage with you in any conversation on this topic. I am not a person with a lot of free time at this point in time. You obviously are convinced of the infallibility of your beliefs and using the small amount of time I have in a useless debate with you is not my cup of tea.

If I said that yes you're points show a small degree of understanding of Dr. Stevenson's research you would ask, In what way? I don't have the time or inclination to debate closed minds.

You're a big boy, if you're interested you can read his books and make up your own mind without resorting to pseudoskeptic websites to get your opinion.

Is is interesting what you say Cold Steel. I read a hypothesis that deals with memories not residing as physical traces in the brain but being connected in an unknow way. The brain would act like a radio or television that could tune into these memories. This would be a possible explanation of children remembering having lived as another person. This could also explain 2 people having the memories of a deceased person.

Actually coldsteel I. Stevenson's research is not based whatsoever on hypnosis.

Stevenson's cases are well-documented. Dr. Tucker a former associate of his has continued his work since Dr. Stevenson is deceased. It is best to read Stevenson's books which are mainly directed toward other scientists rather than the layperson but you can find information on some of his cases online.

The important thing is to keep an open mind. If somebody has already decided something can not be true because of their world view then there is nothing that will open their mind.

I'm not saying to just believe anything but when there are 1000's of eyewitness cases you may begin to believe that there is something behind it. I am also not talking about proof beyond any doubt. I am talking about the preponderance of evidence. If a non-biased jury were presented with an unbiased account of all testimonials for both sides and whatever proof there might be would they rule that there is indeed something behind it or would they believe it's all deceit, incompetence, and wishful thinking?

At this time there can be no 100% assurances that the afterlife is real or unreal.
