Why Are You Here?
by Believer ini'm wondering why believers remain members of this forum which is clearly hostile to believers.
as one member said, nonbelievers pounce on any semblance of belief like piranhas on prey.
as former jws we should have had our fill of judgmental know-it-alls, but here we are.

Phizzy,
I disagree with you. We can't generalise about posters like that. We don't know who will sign up next.
Also you can't say that there have never been posters who break the posting rules and name call and use condescending tone.
Most of the time Simon does address it. But you can't say it never happens.
A poster made an accusation against me yesterday for trolling. So these things do happen.
Believer, you have my support.

I am here to give balance to this forum. To show new members that you can leave WT and still remain a believer.
I am sorry you feel like you have been mistreated by some posters.
Is there any way I can support you?

My son is not sure about what he has been taught about the common ancestor
by KateWild inthis week my son expressed he is agnostic as he is not sure what to believe about evolution and the common ancestor.. i thought any jw hang ups were gone.
i told him that what they teach in school is trustworthy and he can be rest assured that there is evidence to support that the common ancestor was the real link to the evolution of humans.. he has got critical thinking skills.
and responded with "for hundreds of years schools have been teaching things and have changed their thoughts".

Fair enough Cofty I will read all the OPs since you put so much effort into them.
But I am looking to explain to him about the common ancestor and cantleave also wrote this https://www.jehovahs-witness.com/topic/244307/common-ancestry-thread which I think is worth reading too. I will prioritise as I see fit.
And as I have already said I am thinking about reading the Dawkins book cantleave recommend.

Gargamel
Thanks for your post and welcome to JWN or JWD.
I had a phone conversation with Angus today (cantleave) and he said the same thing about Dawkins earlier books. So I might look into them.

GT,
My son is not having trouble with biology. He just isn't sure of what the school is teaching is true.
Also just because someone is qualified and specialises in one subject it doesn't automatically mean they can grasp everything.
You can't understand why I don't do everything in my power to learn about evolution. How do you know I haven't?

GT,
The following is something Cofty wrote in response as part of the thread. It's completely incomprehensible to a 14 yr old. If you think that's what they learn in the US or the UK you are wrong. But feel free to provide a reference showing me the contrary.
I also expect that you don't understand it either because you didn't contribute in this part of the thread.
Eukaryotes are a result of a chimera of an archaeal host and and prokaryotic symbiont

GT,
You're incredibly condescending and disrespectful. Not having an interest in biology is not a problem in my opinion.
My son is learning osmosis in biology right now and I actually find it interesting and remember what I learnt at school.
I have the courage and strength to admit what I don't grasp and the intelligence and ability to explain the complex things I have knowledge of that I do grasp. Such as chemistry. There is no shame in admitting what you don't know. It's actually very arrogant to expect everyone can learn everything because it puts you in a place of never being able to admit you don't understand something.
My point about the amoeba is that it's in cofty's thread which I don't understand which is not high school biology. So his threads are not suitable for this purpose.
