Do you remember the 15 minute break at the Sun. meeting?
by 3rdgen ina poster on another thread reminded me of when there was a 15 min.
break between the talk and the wt study on sundays.
the break was supposed to be to allow jw's time to drive their bible studys home from the talk.

As I recall, the 'reason' was so that those worldly TM people who attended the Public Talk could say their goodbyes, as the WT study was mainly for the JWs themselves.
It was also a great opportunity to put a few welts on the rear ends / legs of fidgety kids like me, to ensure that they would SIT STILL during the WT study. Break time sucked for me. ;)

glenster, do you remember the first D&D for computers? It was on DOS, and text only - you had to draw your own map. :P I worked for a softwae consultant on the F-18, and we had 22 young engineers, most of them from the RMC (Royal Military College here in Canada),. They were soooo into it! We had one wall of my office papered, and all played the game, charting the 'dungeons'. Mid-80s, and omg now I feel old.

OC - two points.
Non-Jews who are tourists, do not have to serve in the Israeli army. They are tourists. EDIT: I don't know if it's true now, but I had a friend who visited Israel in the 80s, and he was an Orthodox Jew who had a visa to stay, I think it was 2 years. As soon as he arrived and was through Customs, he was conscripted! Within 2 weeks, he was shot by a tracer bullet, hospitalized, and returned to Canada. SO, yeah, if you are Jewish, that may be a possibility.
The paper you quoted has some really awesome stuff, but it is about 1st Amendment rights - ie, people serving in the US, "where the need is greater" TM , not missionairies who were/are sent abroad from the USA. We do not want to be like the WTS and quote things 'out of context' in order to make a point.

Heaven - how interesting. I wonder if we had a province-wide curriculum or governed by the school board? I only got through Grade 10 (went back to school later) before my parents took me out of school, but the only "required subject" in NS was English after 1972 - before that, it was English and History. Of course, if you wanted to go on to university, that wouldn't cut the mustard. I was taking Biology, physics, chemistry and of course, my first love,,, Math! :D

And this, from the U. of Ottawa ...
http://www.med.uottawa.ca/sim/data/Religion_Jehovahs_e.htm
Mental Health Mental illness may be viewed by Witnesses as spiritual weakness, or as a result of evil influences. Witnesses may therefore distrust psychiatric therapy, preferring to treat mental illness within their own group. Nonetheless, an issue may be that the strict nature of the religious practices demanded by members, the focus on imminent cataclysmic disaster, and the shunning of members who have left the faith, may form fertile ground for the development of mental distress

The mental health of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Spencer J .
Abstract
The function of religion in human society is complex. The part played by religion in psychiatric disorders is even more obscure. Previous literature and theories are divided into two groups: one school believes that intense religiosity is a symptom-complex indicative of psychiatric disorder, while the opposing view is that religious belief in some way acts as a defence mechanism protecting the individual and his psyche. The present study of 50 Jehovah's Witnesses admitted to the Mental Health Service facilities of Western Australia suggests that members of this section of the community are more likely to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital than the general population. Furthermore, followers of the sect are three times more likely to be diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia and nearly four times more likely from paranoid schizophrenia than the rest of the population at risk. These findings suggest that being a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses faith may be a risk factor predisposing to a schizophrenic illness. Further studies would be interesting in investigating whether pre-psychotic people are more likely to join the sect than normal people and what part (if any) membership has in bringing about such a breakdown.
