What do Mark, Luke, and Paul all have in common?

I was a born-in, and was forced to study WT publications from sunrise to sunset when I wasn't in school, cleaning offices/home, or preaching, for the first 17 years of my life. I was never taught that, and even now, it's NEWS to me! Of course, I haven't picked up a Bible in over 35 years except to reference some posts here, and tear out a couple of pages in the back to use as rolling papers. :P

I did know about Paul, of course, being converted on the road to Damascus. Who could forget Paul? The first Xtian misogynist, and a leader of the movement! I wonder what Jesus would have thought of Paul's hatred of women? Paul probably would've had Mary Magdalene receive 40 lashes less one, or whatever the punishment for prostitution that he deemed fit.

Would you convert to a religion for love?

i also bet many convert simply for love.

would you to assist " true love" if it required converting to a particular faith?.

I felt secure in my belief as a witness and finished with a girlfriend because I was a witness and now I'm not a witness I think there are similarities between all the Abrahamic religionswhich I think make up 54% of the worlds population.

Ucantnome, yes, you are so correct. All branches of the same tree, imho as well.

New Hope, yes, one of my life teachers explained some of the Four Truths to me, in bits and pieces, but it was far too much for me to take in at the time. May I ask which 'school' of Buddhism you relate to? My teacher practices Shambala, for I live in the city of the Shambala Prince, and it is here that Shambala Buddhism has its headquarters. I like some of the ideas of Buddhism, and though I will not embrace it as a religion, would love to study more once I can concentrate better.

I do love the Myoho-renge-kyo chant (not part of the Shambala school), and was speaking to a friend a few weeks ago about perhaps trying the chanting to help with my focus. I find that mindful meditation helps a lot, but still, the pain intrudes on my thought processes.

Though religion is not my thing, I embrace the philosophy of Gaia. And that, well, it feels right. I've always loved nature and animals, druidism, all that stuff, much more than people, so go figure! :D

Glenster, I have a friend who would LOVE your site, I'll pass it on. He likes the different cars and such, and was just showing me some stuff on his GTA 2 weeks ago when he was working on my system. I really enjoyed GTA and Vice City, too, Morrowind was a pretty good RPG, but for me it was kinda 'meh'. I am a WarCraft III lover! It's really the only PC game that I really got into. Diablo2 is pretty good, and I have a copy of NeverWinter Nights that I'm going to start. It's an older RPG, but has so many levels and facets that there is a lot of game play there.

It would be kinda fun to 'go retro' and play that old paper and pencil game, but I think, hard to find a group of folk to do it with.

I checked out Toegoff's vids ..... interesting, and I'll pass that youtube channel on to another friend who enjoys trying out the older games.

i had a look in the library last meeting and my hall still has all the bound volumes going right back to the beginning.

including studies in the scriptures.

i thought the order from on high was that these were to be destroyed or taken away?

My father has quite a collection, from Studies in the Scriptures, and most, if not all, of the old Judge's books, right up to the latest CDRoms (well, up to 2010, we haven't spoken in a couple of years). He has all the bound volumes, books and yearbooks, etc. from 1950 forward and more. They are 'family heirlooms' that his JW son and grandsons, ironically, have no interest in owning, which was very disappointing to him. He granted me permission a few years back to catalogue and sell them, but then I got sick, and by the time I was 'up' to doing it, I had cut all contact with my parents. I wish I had done that now. *sigh*

i look at the words that are found john 6:66-70 and picture a delusional person faced with a huge loss in followers because he wasn't able to make his words pleasing to some and he lost them:.

53 so jesus said to them: most truly i say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in yourselves.+54 whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has everlasting life, and i will resurrect+ him on the last day; 55 for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.

Someone said that to me about 5 years ago; my only family member with whom I am secretly in touch. *grins* I get strong vibes that he has never really 'believed', and he said to me once, rather wistfully "But where would I go?"

And when I think of it, with a lifetime of being in the b'Org, marrying young, never 'readhing out' to be an MS, but faithfully attending and going in FS only the minimum, yeah, he doesn't believe. But it would be daunting to go out into the world, at 50+, and leave the KH (his spouse is a True Believer, as is most of the family), and all that you knew behind.

They truly do drill this scripture into our heads from birth (yes, we are born-in, my family), and by their isolation of the cult members, reinforce the very real fear of being alone in a world of scary, untrustworthy strangers.

This is not happifying.

Consider the "outcome" when elders apply the two-witness "rule"

jehovahs witnesses two-witness rule is applied by elders when a witness member accuses another member of a sin, even if that sin is a criminal act.

if there arent two witnesses to the accusation, it goes nowhere, including not being reported to the authorities.

and in the case of an allegation of child abuse, the accused is free to molest again.. watchtower attorney, jim mccabe, recently stated this about jehovahs witnesses two-witness rule which he described as a bible-based belief :.

BA, I have some answers, but have been threatened in the past to keep my mouth shut. There have been others on the board who know what i'm thinking of, but hell, I would never bring it up here. First off, few would believe me, and second, I want to be left alone by my former abusers.

"Those who talk, will have their mouths shut for them."

PS, the threats had NOTHING to do with JWN. They were made in person, and locally. You seem to have been well-connected in the b'Org, and perhaps you know what I am alluding to. If not, that's okay as well.

Mental Disorders among JW's

hi everyone, im begining to notice patterns of mental issues in the congregations and among the witnesses as a group.

do you think this is a trend in the entire world or is it exagerated in this organization?.

Spectre - whoa, you have been through the fire. And I agree with your conclusion "It tells them what they want to hear." I see that in my family ,, oh yeah.

You've also reminded me of a boy I grew up with, a JW. He was a sweet guy. Then, one day we heard on the news that he had stabbed a local girl to death, like 15 or 20 times, very brutal. We were the same age, around 17/18 years old. He was found guilty, and sentenced to life in prison. Of course, this was big news and all over the press at the time (mid-70s). He had been hearing voices that told him to kill the next person that came along. I went to see him while he was still in the local jail (he had to do federal time, of course, in another province). By this time, several years had passed, as it takes time for these things to go through the so-called justice system.

Anyway, he had grounds for appeal because of the voices, so I asked him why he didn't appeal. He told me that he did it, and wanted to go to prison and pay for it. He was never diagnosed with anything. I feel sure that the upbringing in the WTS had a lot to do with his psychotic break. So sad.

Thanks, Oubliette. It's just old skills, having been a teacher at a community college years ago, writing my own courses (personal computing in the 80s, it was a new field back then, and hey, those were exciting times!), and corporate trainer for a while. I really admire teachers like yourself, though. It is truly a calling, and if you are teaching in the public school system, underpaid. Take care of yourself and don't get burnt out.
