OC - nice work! This has been federal law for decades. When I took my training (working with rape crisis), that was back in '95. It was the law then. Just a heads up, and good to see this thoroughly presented. :)

Mandatory Reporting Laws in Canada - Child Abuse
by OrphanCrow inthe issue of whether or not the elders have a duty to report is clear cut in canada.
this will make it impossible for the wts to wriggle out of the wrongs that have been exposed in quebec recently.
the elders in those situations have received their instructions from the wts lawyers and they have been advised wrongly.. for several years (can't remember when this was made law...years back), it has been mandatory for everyone in canada to report suspected cases of child abuse, which, naturally, include the sexual abuse of minors.

If John Redwood wants to report on the case every day surely that is a good thing. Better than not. I don't see where shes not been transparent.
In my little world, we need to have credibility. Do you know who John Redwood is/was? Obviously not. The use of John Redwood for a pseudonym is inflammatory, at the least.
There IS no John Redwood reporting. Are you getting it? YET?
Seriously. *eye roll*
FYI, from Wiki, and also FYI , there is no "John Redwood" in the exJW movement, such as it is.John Alan Redwood (born 15 June 1951) is a British Conservative Party politician and Member of Parliament (MP) for Wokingham in the county of Berkshire. He was formerly Secretary of State for Wales in Prime Minister John Major's Cabinet and was an unsuccessful challenger for the leadership of the Conservative Party in 1995. He is currently Co-Chairman of the Conservative Party's Policy Review Group on Economic Competitiveness. He is employed by N M Rothschild & Sons.

Was Ray Franz Playing The Long Game?
by rory-ks ini'm just making my way through crisis of conscience for the second time and once again i am struck by the presentation of such detailed records.
letters are shown in full - copies of letters from the branch, and to the branch.
reports are quoted vebatim.

To me, Ray Franz seemed to be genuine, and as an uneducated man, used his natural logic. He saw the corruption; he saw the crazy - in his own relative. The book, CofC, is dry and poorly written, but shows an earnest man's attempt (and he succeeds) to expose the fraud of an organization that he once believed in.
I don't feel he was playing any game; he was more of a naif, and just telling the truth as he saw it. He did what he felt was right, that's all.

To BA reporting, I find this a bit off-putting.
The Trial is expected to last 5 or 6 days and John Redwood from JW Survey will be reporting on the developments each day.
John Redwood is not a journalist - that is a pseudonym, and really, if it's Lloyd Evans, or some other person who is reporting developments, should we not know who they are? Why the fake name?
I don't like this obfuscation, Barbara. We need to be transparent. Completely.tal

darkspilver, you said
Yes, exactly - and I understand that breaking the mandatory reporting laws is a criminal offense? - therefore why doesn't the State of Pennsylvania, who wrote the law, prosecute when the criminal law is broken? Maybe they have? I'm just going by what's been reported - or not - in this case.
Indeed.
This is another example of authorities paying lip service to the protection of children, but not following through with prosecution. I see law enforcement as especially lax when not charging teachers, clergy and others who are charged with caring for children, knew of the abuse, and failed to report. Failure to report is a *crime* in Canada. Maybe Orphan Crow has some stats on this, or another poster. I was unable to find instances where adults were charged with 'failure to report' in Canada.
(edit: sorry, the format's a bit messed up)

So, the Womens March ... What Is It For?
by Simon init seems like mobilizing after the election, which seems pointless.
i keep hearing demands for equal rights but don't understand what rights they are missing exactly.. normally a march is to show the support (and potential votes) for a cause, but ... votes for what?
... and the election happened already.. is anyone else confused?

Glenster - just signed in to say 'goodbye' to a legend.
As a young child, I remember her saying "Oh, Dick!". As a 20-something, I remember her throwing her hat in the air, and her wonderful friend, Phyllis.
An icon, for sure. RIP beautiful lady, who championed her cause (alcoholism), was an amazing comedienne, and the best since Lucy.
The best of the MTM show would be, for many fans, the "Chuckles the Clown" episode. I leave you with this. x

WoMD ... so where are they?
by Simon innow, the war is over, the weapons were not used and of course have not been found.. how threatening could they be if they did not even use them when being invaded by a massive force (of the countries they hate)?!
perhaps, as many suspect, they didn't use them because they didn't have them?.
now we're being told that we'll have to be patient and give them time to find them.

David Kay: WMDs That Never Were, A War That Ever Was
In 2004, almost a year after the start of the Iraq War, David Kay resigned his post as the United States' chief weapons inspector in Iraq. Kay said his group had found no evidence that Iraq had stockpiled chemical and biological weapons before the U.S.-led invasion. His findings were at odds with assertions from the Bush administration at the time. Host Liane Hansen talks with Kay about the conflict in Iraq since then.
