Announcement to print from JW.ORG in service meeting
by suavojr inyes, you read that correctly.
last night during the service meeting, the cobe gave an announcement that we should start printing or using jw.org for any special literature such as the daily text, the yearly calendar, etc... he also mentioned to please cancel any orders of the wt and awake on cds because no one is picking them up and they are piling up.. .
my question is, where did this elder get this info from?

Were the first Christians a high-control cult?
by Freedom77 inafter i left the borganization, age 21 going on 22, i stopped praying and was totally uninterested in any religion, and for about 10 years i was at best agnostic.
then, omitting a long story, i realized i missed spirituality in my life and eventually felt gently but definitely led to a mainstream protestant church, which suited me fine at first.. but i discovered that church is just not the place for a single man, especially a single gay man: despite what anybody may say about being welcoming to all kinds of people, the kinds of people who go to church (all churches) are overwhelmingly straight couples with kids, their grandmas and grandpas, and little old blue-haired widows.
very nice people for the most part, and totally undogmatic or pushy as the jw's are, but i have nothing in common with them outside of sunday service.. yes i tried going to sunday school classes, bible studies, church suppers, etc.

Originally they were not a high control cult. In fact they were trying to seperatefrom the high control Jewish religious leaders. There was no ecclesiastical structure, therefore no real way to project authority or control. Eventually as the religion grew, leaders with strong personalities began to assert their authority and promote their doctrines. There were creeds or statements of beliefs. Debates arose over the nature of Jesus. Soon church leaders were demanding adherence to particular doctrines for salvation. There were councils where beliefs were hotly contested. Those who didn't agree were denounced as heretics. Eventually the Catholic Church began to rule with an iron fist wielding the power of excommunication and death sentences. Basically the transformation from harmless sect to high control authoritarian group mirrors that of jehovahs witnesses. JWs started as harmless independent groups of bible students. Then Rutherford came along and developed an ecclesiastical authority structure. Disfellowshipping which is the same as excommunication was born and the JW religion became a high control group.

I grew up in an all black congregation, but attended an all white school. I have also attended Spanish congregations. This has helped me to understand and respect totally different perspectives and narratives on race. Please be respectful during this discussion. No labeling please!
One poster yesterday talked about how the Watchtower attempts to whitewash or force everyone to conform to white western cultural norms. I would agree with this sentiment. Especially in the United States. Speaking from a black persons perspective, many converts who used to attend church were not used to the lack of emotion showed at JW meetings. Black churches often have choirs and bands. My non JW relatives participate in such activities. But at the KH such things are not allowed. Most kingdom songs lack emotion and are drab. In contrast black gospel music is very soulful. The watchtower used to imply that only classical music was acceptable to Jehovah in worship. It took forever for them to even record melodies with a beat! Why can't god be praised with other forms of music, even country or Latin? Also many blacks are used to bombastic entertaining preachers who work up a sweat on the stage. Instead watchtower outlines are very drab. So black JWs were forced to deny part of their cultural heritage to be acceptable.
Also Jehovah hates people who are late. But if you were to take a psychology course, you will find a not all cultures view timeliness as important. blacks and Hispanics don't seem to be as rigid about timeliness.
Blacks and Hispanics cultures love to dance. However, most watchtowers condemn or discourage loud music and dancing as if it were evil. One article says that spiritual fellowship and association should be the highlight. Sorry, but nobody wants to go to a party that's not gonna have good music and dancing. Of course there's no need to be obnoxiously loud, but trying to force blacks and Hispanics to party the same way certain white bethelites do is silly.
We were also taught that certain handshakes were imitating the world. JWs taught from the platform that wearing your hat backwards or sideways was worldly and bad. Even if the lyrics were clean, rap music was frowned upon. Non vulgar black slang was frowned upon as worldly. Until too many people complained, shaving your head was worldly. You were accused of trying to imitate and idolize Jordan.
Now if you grew up in an all white congregation, you likely had a different experience. This doesn't make you racist. We all have different perspectives based on our upbringings.

1. No fun
2. Doesn't teach good decision making. JWs cannot choose the color of their underwear without first consulting watchtower publications. This stunts emotional development.
3. Discourages secular education. When young ones leave, they often missed out on opportunities to go to college. With no parental support, they are forced to begin working and cannot afford college immediately. This sets them back a few years.
4. Poor marital prospects/lack of understanding the opposite sex and relationships. Watchtower teaches that holding microphones, going in service and giving talks turns girls on. Flirting is evil. Thus young ones have no idea how to deal with the opposite sex. JWs have a fake public persona. Thus when they get married, they have no idea who they are marrying. Sexual repression also causes some to marry only for sex.
5. Complete abandonment if child doesn't choose watchtower. In modern society more and more young adults rely on the resources of their parents into their mid twenties. However, if you leave watchtower this support system dissolves.
6. Only acceptable prospects is bethel and pioneer service. JW youth are not encouraged to explore their interests or talents.

Something Big is Coming...
by notsurewheretogo inthe annual meeting of the governing body of jehovah's witnesses will be in october 2014.. .. in november 2013, just after the last one they published this now famous statement in the 15th of november 2013 watchtower page 16 paragraph 17 says:.
"at that time, the lifesaving direction that we receive from jehovahs organization may not appear practical from a human standpoint.
all of us must be ready to obey any instructions we may receive, whether these appear sound from a strategic or human standpoint or not.".

Strange story from Assembly
by Clambake ini am at the assembly and the last speaker of the day is doing some boring and cliche talk about trusting in jehovah and not being anxious and stuff.
then he starts into this story about this 11 year old boy named nigel who has cancer and is going to have a court ordered blood transfusion.. i am getting up to leave because i am thinking he is going to start into some story about he managed to get out of it and died for jehovah or something like that.
the speaker never finishes the story about what finally happened.

Great baptism numbers. Discounting deaths and disfellowshippings, that makes for a less than 1% growth.

At RC, Splane says 1000+ new KH's needed, last year only "60" new one's built.
by oppostate inso there are now regular, full time "construction servants" and their help is much needed along with regional rbc volunteers, who better get working because over a thousand kh's are needed and last year only sixty were built by the u.s. branch.
.
splane also said that just with the new baptized this weekend all over the u.s. we had one whone new circuit, so we better put more work into building needed kingdom halls..
