Wow such a sad story. He had no real way out. This is something we would have never known or heard about had it not been for posts like these. Does anyone know if this story was caught on by the press? -

bethel joke.
three guys are sitting around, each drinking a large glass of beer.........a publisher, a pioneer and a bethelite.......just then, a fly lands in all three of their glasses of beer........the publisher....pushes the glass away and says....."i can't drink this now"...........the pioneer looks over, and picks the fly out of the beer and keeps on drinking............the bethelite.........picks up the fly by its wings and holds its head over the glass and says "spit it out......spit it out!

Where's part 15? Or maybe it was a typo. Nevertheless, I enjoy reading these bethel stories, and any stories from the past. Really gives a different perspective to us from future generations. -

Double life
by Esmeralda001 inis there a way i can successfully live a double life?
don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to get engaged in activities that are condemnable according to the *bible* (not the *wt*) standards.
i figured that the only way i can get the brothers and sisters to leave me along is by pretending that i am an unemployed drop out.

You could try and live that way but could only do it for so long. Sounds draining. Also someone could, by some chance, find out the truth. It'll be a challenge to go against the current but it's a more honest one. Plus aren't they always telling us at the Kingdom Hall to be different and not follow the crowd? (Even though I know in this sense they're taking about worldly people). Like others said, tell them it's a personal affair and try putting a stop to them. -

Elder continues serving as elder after his daughter got disfellowshipped!
by hardtobeme inthis is what is happening in a spanish congregation in our area.
this happened 3 weeks ago.
this brother conducted the school and after the school was over, another elder gave the announcement: "( name of the person) is not longer a jehovah's witness".

I find it strange that this elder wasn't removed from his position. Usually that's what always happens. I've attended a Spanish congregation for most of my life and I've never heard of them letting someone slip by. He's probably favored or protected by the other elders. Although I have heard of elders where they ride back to position or get privileges back in a short amount of time. -

At my hall, they keep playing the new songs in the background after the meeting is over. When this song came up, my sister started talking like if she was a commercial narrator. We laughed and then we started talking about how weird and mainstream-like the new songs sounds. It sound like church music to me. -

Is the term "worldly" outdated?
by A.proclaimer inyesterday i had to listen to the co from a spanish congregation on the phone.
he said the fds has been gradually moving away from the word "worldly" and teaching jws not to use the term anymore.
has anyone heard this in their congregation or heard the term "non-believers" used before?

1914, leap years, and sticky math situation
by A.proclaimer in360 days x 2520 years = 907,200 days.
365.25 days x 2520 years = 920,430 days.
920,430 days - 907,200 days = 13,230 days in difference .

@ St. George
i actually didn't know that a year wasn't exactly 365.25 days a year. It's an approximate number from what I read so far. Makes the whole think more complicated
Nevertheless my point was to show how complicated the whole thing is and to disprove the leap years excuse. Of course we know that 1914 isn't true and can be proven in other ways. But can you imagine people In the distant past sitting down to do the math if this was the formula?

I thought I'd make this thread to accompany Blondie's post on 1914. Might be helpful to some, especially if you like math. Reading the post will help gather more information to better understand this.
http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/topic/6036297403596800/if-year-really-365-1-4-days-why-360-days-calculate-1914
I'm also crediting this page for the first calculations:
http://www.jwstruggle.com/2012/01/a-problem-with-1914/We know that in order to get from 607 b.c.e. to 1914 (spanning 2,520 years), the solar calendar of 365.25 days is used. Yet the Watchtower used a 360 day calendar when talking about the prophecy.
This doesn't work because if we calculate the number of days, it doesn't add up:360 days x 2520 years = 907,200 days
365.25 days x 2520 years = 920,430 days
920,430 days - 907,200 days = 13,230 days in difference
Divide 13,230 by 365.25 days to find out the years in difference.
13,230 days / 365.25 days = 36.22 years.
Since 2520 years from 607 b.c.e. equals 1914 c.e., then 36.22 years difference lands to 1877.78 which is quite close to 1878, the original year Russell and Barbour believed for Christ to have return.
Okay, but what about the leap years mentioned in adding an extra month 7 times within 19 years for a 360 day calendar?
Under what was just calculated, we didn't added the 30 day leap year counted 7 times every 19 years. So to find out about how many times we should use it, let's first see how many times 19 years will appear under 2520 years.
2520/19 = 132.63 times
Therefore 19 years will happen 132.63 times within 2,520 years.
To simplify our calculations, we have to first find out the total number of days within the 19 year span. To find out how many years will be normal years within the 19 years, we must subtract from 7 because 7 years in total will be leap years:
19 years - 7 years = 12 years
12 years will be the amount of normal years. How many days will there be within 12 years?
12 years x 360 days = 4320 days
How many days will there be in 7 leap years?
7 years x 390 days = 2,730 days
Now add both numbers:
4320 days + 2730 days = 7,050 daysEvery 19 years will equal 7,050 days in total.
Since 19 years will appear 132.63 times (or years) within a span of 2,520 years, we multiply the numbers to find out the total number of days:
7,050 days x 132.63 times = 935,041.5 days
935,041.5 days is a large difference from 907,200 days (360 calendar) or 920,430 (365.25 calendar).
If we were to find out what year we land in:
935,041.5 days - 920,430 days = 14,611.5 days in differenceWithin a 365.25 day calendar:
14,611.5/ 365.25 = 40 years
1914 + 40 = 1954, so in reality if we follow the 360 day calendar including its leap years, we land on 1954. Far from 1914 or any significant world date.
If you notice any errors, feel free to point it (or them) out down below. -

If a year is really 365 1/4 days why 360 days to calculate 1914
by blondie indoesn't that throw off the date?.
*** w51 6/15 p. 383 questions from readers ***.
in establishing the length of the seven times of the gentiles, a time or year of 360 days is used, to give 2,520 days, which become 2,520 years when ezekiel 4:6 is applied.

Adding onto this problem, the Jewish lunar calendar isn't strictly 360 days but rather 353, 354, or 355 days and every 7 years it's 383, 384 or 385 days. Months aren't 30 days each but could be either 29 or 30.
"The Jewish calendar is based on three astronomical phenomena: the rotation of the Earth about its axis (a day); the revolution of the moon about the Earth (a month); and the revolution of the Earth about the sun (a year). These three phenomena are independent of each other, so there is no direct correlation between them. On average, the moon revolves around the Earth in about 29½ days. The Earth revolves around the sun in about 365¼ days, that is, about 12 lunar months and 11 days.
To coordinate these three phenomena, and to accommodate certain ritual requirements, the Jewish calendar consists of 12 or 13 months of 29 or 30 days, and can be 353, 354, 355, 383, 384 or 385 days long. The keystone of the calendar is the new moon, referred to in Hebrew as the molad."
