  Have you ever paid for a bible study?

  one of the funniest claims made by jw's is that they offer free bible studies.

  i have taken countless bible studies and i have lead a fair amount myself.

  never once was money involved.. sure if you want an academic level study you will have to pay for it(i am sure though i will not be getting a scholarly level study with local jw).

  Sure if you want an academic level study you will have to pay for it(I am sure though I will not be getting a scholarly level study with local JW).   Also I have payed for materials to be used in a study.    However I have never payed for the study itself.  As a matter of fact I think the vast majority of spirit minded people that I know would consider it a sacrilege to pay for a bible study.
  

  Do they really think we are so small minded that we will see "free" and then just demand to have it because it is free?  Have you ever actually payed for a study?

  The problem with most gun control laws is that they limit the access of peaceful law abiding citizens while doing little about the criminal element.

  It is about playing to the fears of the populace while only giving lip service to the real issues at hand.

  A perfect example is the assault weapon ban.  First of all the VAST majority of gun crimes are committed with hand guns NOT rifles.  Even still the ban had to do with how a gun looked (playing on fears again) and not on how it functioned.   There is little evidence that the assault weapon band limited crime or that crime went up after it expired.

  For comparison sake lets compare causes of preventable death....

  126,000 people die every year from various injuries

  106,000 people die from bad medicine reactions

  80,000 people die from hospital acquired infections
  

  36,000 people die from poisoning
  

  33,000 people die from traffic accidents
  

  27,000 people die from falls

  20,000 people die from hospital errors
  

  10-14,000 people die from gun related homicide

  Where is the called to ban Doctors?  Medicine?  Cars? Ladders? Poison?   All of them kill more people every year than guns.

  The united states is much safer than it appears to be.   Yes we do have a gang problem.   The majority of gun crimes are related to this.   However almost half of all gun crimes happen in just 5 cities, LA Chi NY Philadelphia and HOU.
  

  
  

  If you have no associations with gangs and you don't happen to live in those 5 cities you are safer than you are in the majority of the developed world.   Yes in certain specific places gun crime is very high but in the vast majority of the country you are VERY safe.

  Simon I whole hardheartedly agree that gun owners need to be held responsible.   The question is how would it have prevented this tragedy?  She paid the highest price for her decisions with her life.   Unfortunately the toddlers life is also messed up and that is very sad.

  I think it would fair to say that people who carry personal guns with them haven't shown any factual proof that doing so protects them from violence.

  If I was as gun owner... why do I have to prove that owning a gun makes me safer? 

  If it makes me feel safer, it is my constitutional right.   End of discussion.  Others here want to limit constitutional rights.   The burden is on them to prove their case.

  While it is difficult to prove that concealed carry reduces the crime rate,   there is NO evidence that allowing it increases the crime rate. People who fear guns assume if you give the population more guns you will automatically get more crime.  The evidence suggests the opposite.

  I fail to see how a peaceful law abiding firearm owner negatively effects the life of the greater community.

  
  

  I also fail to see how passing laws would keep guns out of the hands of criminals.    As it is even with our current regulations for buying firearms I would bet that the VAST majority of crimes where committed with illegally acquired guns.

  An Airplane is private property.   The owner of that property can deny you access to said property for what ever reason they want (including you carrying a gun).

  However if you don't let me carry my gun (I don't personally own one but i believe in our rights regardless) YOU have a responsibility for my safety.   Airlines do a reasonable job with security.    If I walk into a courthouse, I understand I have to check my firearm at the door but again I can trust that I will be secure there.   However haven't you noticed that virtually all these mass shootings have happened in "gun free zones"?   I think the owner of a property or business takes on a HUGE responsibility when they put up a guns free zone sign.

  While I also have right to free speech I realize that that right might be abridged while I am patronizing a business or I am on private property.   I can't just walk in to a store and start spouting off the craziest nonsense.   If I don't like I don't have to go to that store.  However when I am in public I am free to say what ever I want.

  You might think I am crazy but if we where allowed to carry firearms on airplanes I don't think we would ever see another hijacking.   Yes occasionally individuals might be gunned down but you wouldn't see mass shootings or hijackings.

  Guns are not the problem.   The problem is our rowdy violent American culture.   Even if you took all of our guns away people would still find ways to be violent.  As a matter of fact if you goal is to kill lots of people quickly, guns aren't particularly effective.   Automobiles or even a gas tank and matches are much better ways of killing lots of people.   As a matter of fact our worst cases of mass murder in this country where committed with incendiary devices and bombs.

  This site is all about doing what is in your own self interest.   It is about living your own life how you see fit.   It is about the courage to be independent from any one or any organization that seeks control us.
  

  
  

  Then when it comes to protecting your property, family or your very own life, you want to hand over all that control to somebody else,  be that a security organization or a government.
  

  
  

  I say you are not a free man if you are unwilling to do what it takes to defend what is yours.    This is why rather than just being a talking point I truly believe the right to bare arms is a universal right.  It is not a platitude.  It is the fundamental right that all the others rest upon.  If you are not willing to defend your right to live you will give up all your other rights.
