So smiddy.... lets say you had your way and somehow every firearm disappeared from the world tomorrow. Would murder stop? Do you think violent crime would really be reduced significantly? Was the world a more peaceful place before guns were invented?
Did Cain need a gun to murder Abel? The problem is in the human heart. The object used to carry out the act doesn't matter. People with violent inclinations will find a way to do what they do.
Now before you say "well guns make it easier to kill more people quicker" are you paying attention to the news? Violent people have become very creative lately in how do their damage. As a matter of fact even if you look at the biggest cases of mass murder in the USA the object of choice was something flammable and or explosive. Lately autos/trucks have been the preferred tool of carnage.
In the USA guns are not the root cause to our violent inner cities. There are many social/economical/racial/cultural reasons. Yes our over all violent crime rate is relativity high compared to much of the world.... MOST of that takes place in just a handful of metropolitan areas. Most of the USA is very safe and peaceful. Fix the issues that plagues our inner cities, and gun control becomes unnecessary.
I support gun rights because it is the only thing in the world that can take a little old lady and put her on the same level as the most hardened gang banger. If you can not forcefully protect your own right to life, you have no guarantees of ANY of your rights.

What do You Think About Hybrid and Electric Cars?
by Village Idiot inbattery technology has been making leaps and bounds in affordability and energy output throughout the past decade.
while pure electric cars currently have limited range, the near future holds prospects for longer ranges.
hybrids, and recently plug in hybrids, have a mileage of up to 50 mpg* giving them a range of 500 miles from a ten gallon gas tank.

Of course burning fuel in power plant instead of in a car is more efficient... However the actual building of electric cars is very toxic/bad for the environment. So on balance those cars are probably not better for the environment. -

June 2017 Watchtower - Jehovah's Sovereignty is at stake if you disagree with us
by Listener infour years ago the watchtower made the following demand.
all of us must be ready to obey any instructions we may receive, whether these appear sound from a strategic or human standpoint or not.
they are not content with obedience and in the upcoming june watchtower they have this to say -15. how does respect for theocratic headship reveal our love for jehovah’s way of ruling?15 what is our response to divinely authorized headship?

Two thoughts here....
Obviously the Watchtower writers don't understand what the word "sovereignty" means.
And secondly.... it is truly odd how often verses the watchtower points too, when read in context, actually mean the opposite of what is claimed and frequently actually condemns the specific teaching alluded to.

Why I believe the quality of my posts has improved.
by The Rebel in" thinking fast and slow" is a self help book by d kahneman.. according to my simplified understanding of the above self-help book we have 2 brains, which the author calls system 1 brain and system 2 brain.. system 1 brain is the brain that make the decisions, that we do as routine.. system 2 brain is the brain that uses conscious reasoning.
thinking that requires conscious effort.. now the interesting thing is system1 brain is often making decisions system 2 brain isn't even aware are being made.
this is because system 2 brain requires conscious reasoning, and thinking that requires effort.

Should a Priest ,Elder ,Pastor withold a crime from the relevant authorities because of a confidential confessional ?
by smiddy inwhat do you believe , is a confessional something that is sacred between the the two parties involved ?
or does it depend on the severity of the crime/sin.. or is their a responsability of the recpient of the confession to divulge what he/she knows about the crime.?.
what we see in movies ,tv, etc shows it is a no no .but is that true ?the confessional is only between the two involved.?.

If someone confesses to something in the past..... and they have made an effort to actually repent of what ever the issue was it should stay between the clergy and the person.
Now on the other hand if it is a currently happening crime, or there is reason to think any one might be in danger due to the persons actions... the clergy member has a very clear moral obligation to go to the authorities.
The clergy going to the authorities should never be about making sure the person was punished... it should solely be to protect the innocent.

Election Post-Mortem
by Simon ini'm sure many people, republicans included, are shocked at the results of the 2016 presidential election.
really, wtf!.
the polls were wrong and although it's tempting to blame voter suppression and fbi interference, that would just avoid looking at the real issues for the loss.

I think people are still getting it wrong... People voted FOR Trump not against Hillary. If you watched MSM all you saw was all the crazy antics that Trump did. HOWEVER if you really paid attention.... it was Trumps campain that was issue based and talked about things that mattered to average Americans. In one simple paragraph I can tell you what Trump stands for and what his important issues are.
Hillary never had a clear message. For all the "plans" she had, what was she passionate about? What did Hillary stand for? Her two biggest things where, more of the same (4 more years of Obama and the status quo). and secondly she wasn't trump. She wanted to be president because she thought it was her turn. Not because she had some great vision for this country.

Origin of Life
by cofty inin recent years significant progress has been made in solving the question of how life originated on our planet.. how do you think theists will respond when it finally happens?
as a former christian i know my reaction would have been something like "well that just goes to show that it takes intelligent life to make life", but for two reasons that defense doesn't work.. firstly it would prove that life is not an ethereal force that originates with god.
there is no 'ghost in the machine', no elan vital.

Understanding the physical processes that operate and shape our universe will not the eliminate the need for meaning and purpose and will never answer the question of "Why".

There was a day when if there was a wanted man hiding in a residence... the police would just stake the place out, and wait for the suspect to emerge and then apprehend them in the least confrontational way possible. Now a days they come in at 3 in the morning on a no knock warrant and fill your house with a swat team with military weapons. Yea who thinks that is a good idea?
