  i've always wondered that.

  recently i asked that question on another thread and didn't really get ananswer.

  cofty made an excellent point that we often hear what it isn't, but that really isn't useful.. so, what is it?

  Viv;...All made possible by the air we breathe, is a statement, it is NOT trying to identify the type of spirit as in gods, demons etc, but rather identfies the ancient concept of the physical air which without we would not be able to communicate as we are now doing, with great spirit I might add.

  The ancients had many things they called spirit. You are picking thing arbitrarily out of a hat and pretending it's everything. It's a metaphor, picked at random. It gets us no closer to an answer.

  Am I right in believing the spirit you are trying to identify is of the supernatural kind? As I have said previously I don't believe there is such a thing.

  The ability to make higher order abstractions has nothing to do with intellect. I was not insinuating posters are stupid, just not as able as others in this area.

  Since you have yet to explain why accepting a non-answer is a good thing and a sign of being able to perform abstract thinking, you really are just telling people they don't have the ability to get it, that they are lacking. Should you be able to connect the dots and demonstrate WHY this answer requires any form of abstract thinking, you may be approaching the state of "having a point" at that time. So far, we have a non-answer your stance that others just don't have the ability to get it.

  You'll need to do better than that. Assuming other people aren't capable is a horrible, ignorant and usually wrong starting position.

  By saying my comments are off topic, you indicate I have failed in my explanation.
  To assist, please read the entire post, since it is easy to extract individual sentences and project them as being off topic when in actuality they are merely smaller parts of a larger whole.

  You were asking biology questions. Start a biology thread if that is what you want to discuss.

  Why does it seem that some see emotion as an enemy ?

  Completely off topic.

  Spirit is intertwined with of all the above processes giving rise to things like love, hope , trust , purpose, fulfillment. Trying to capture the essence of spirit is like a cat trying to catch a flashlight beem you shine at it

  You still haven't said what it is and, in fact, have said we can't know. Is your answer still "don't know"?

  So we can identify the chemical cause of an emotion and observe the physical consequence of an emotion, but the emotion itself, what is that comprised of?

  Chemical reactions in your brain. Off topic, however. Please strart your own thread if you want to discuss biology, Snare is quite good at contributing to those.

  I only added this question since it seems to be of a similar composition to spirit.
  We know it's there because we can observe the effect of an emotion, much like the spirit manifest itself at pentecost.

  So far no one has offered any as to what spirit may be comprised of. We are no closer to an answer than when we started.

  All the EFFECTS you so well describe S&R , and even the chemical-electrical SITUATION of the brain that give rise to them, can or should be possible to be detected, but the word is give 'RISE' which implies that the way we perceive information, conditions are a notch above the mere physical, material domain in which they occur, because how can you say that your's or your patient's or your reader's feelings, thoughts are not real, only queer, meaningless arrangements of matter,energy in time?

  As I have stated earlier on in this thread, I believe spirit is the animating force within living things, I also believe the memory animates living things. So I have my answer as to what spirit is. I doubt it will satisfy everyone, but I am satisfied.

  What is this animating force made of? Where is it? Can we detect it? So that that gets us no closer to an answer as of what spirit is made of.

  So the spirit is the combination of factors that animate living things.

  Can be summed up as "evolution, chemistry and biology", making it a metaphor.

  All made possible by the air we breath.

  Why are many not emotionally satisfied with this answer ?

  It has nothing to do with emotions. It's just a non-answer that tells us nothing new.

  I think it's because many are concrete thinkers and need answers in black and white terms. Some are not able to make higher order abstractions and read between the lines.

  Kate, please don't insinuate other posters are stupid. This has nothing to do with an ability make higher order abstractions. So far, no one has been able to say what spirit is made of except to claim it's a metaphor for something else. There is no abtraction to make so far.

  Viv ....SPIRIT is a group of christians, singing them selfs in to heaven " we are so happy, we are so happy" But that answer those words, that song will not satisfy...." We are so happy, we are so happy" A silent empty answer for you but for many christians a fully satisfying and complete answer....actually the arrival of answers is an answer.

  Please do not presume to have any intelligence regarding what I will think about things. Having said that, your answer is that it an emotional high of happiness. It's a metaphor, in this case.

  but this debate doesnt seem to get large only smaller as many opinions are dismissed by Viv in a way posters feel "our voices, our opinn the anwers we have offerd our " sincere" answers .....thix thread has lost so many people that could have contributed to " your answer"

  The debate is wide open. Quite the contrary from dismissing anyone's answers, I have summarized and presented every answer as accurately as possible. If you feel someone has told us what spirit is made of and it was dismissed, please let me know.

  So im my above inarticulate way, the answer is Spirit is a word, something better than a feeling.

  That would fall under "it's a metaphor" as an answer.

  But in this post the question " what is spirit" was not asked in team " spirit" ...it was a question looking for words such as atmosphere, indefinable, something that defined laws and rights...something that wanted to be heard as an individual.

  It was just a question. You are are reading more into it that is there. There were no "rules" or expectations around it.

  Spirit was a question that produced a controversial thread and lost those who had the questions to your question...viv i say EGO is your spirit.

  So far no one has said what it's made of. You can say whatever you like, of course, and join the growing crowd that ignorantly pretends to know anything about me and present that error as fact. I've noticed that a common fallback position amongst those claiming to have and failing to present an answer.

  Ruby, wherever would you get such a ridiculous notion? It's the furthest thing from reality that "getting called for pretending to know made up BS" is even close to te idea of saying you can't disagree. You can disagree all you want, I encourage it.

  the classic debate between those who believe that consciousness is merely the result of the operation of the brain, and those who believe that it is apart from the brain, like the idea of a soul or the classic dualistic distinction between mind and body, is a well-known one.. however the thought has occurred that when people try to convince me that the soul cannot be real; soul in the sense of consciousness being a separate thing to the operation of the brain, then really the materialistic non spiritual view is in fact a rehash of animism, strange as that might sound.. animism is the idea that soul, spirit, consciousness, or whatever it might be called, exists in plants, animals, things, objects, places or basically in everything and anything in the material world.

  the view of some is that very primitive cultures had this wide category of spiritual belief, which eventually evolved into the all the religions, faiths and spiritualties of today.

  some of the faiths of modern times are not defined as animistic because these draw a distinction between soul and body or in modern parlance, consciousness and brain.. so in very ancient times, at the dawn of human spiritual belief, the sun, for example, rising and setting was seen not so much as being caused by the proverbial spaghetti monster but as being the proverbial spaghetti monster.

  You did. It's not, though. It's anecdotal. Actual evidence shows a burst of activity in the brain after the heart stops and oxygen levels drop. All physical, no spirits involved.
