Do remember also, that the Hutu have suffered since in retaliatory violence. My SIL says the fighting will never end until there are no Hutu or Tutsi, just Rwandan.

The most tragic thing is that the rest of the world knew and did nothing to help. Simply scrambling the radio signals could have saved thousands of lives. May those that have gone R.I.P. It's kind of hard to celebrate when ALL genocide hasn't stopped.

Nick Nolte spoke one of the best lines in any movie to date in Hotel Rwanda (paraphrasing):

    'You're not even a nigger, you're African'

Sums up the situation to a tee.

Part of me wanted to see Hotel Rwanda. I just couldn't though. I was afraid it would be too sad. How did you find the movie, Del?

My advice watch it. Not to spoil it too much for you though. One thing I will say is that it did not deserve the Hollywood ending it got. If it really ended how it did thats fine. Don Cheadle is fantastic in this.

Great post. So much for the 'worse than ever' routine. I can't wait to bring this up at the hall.

As a side note, I thought Hotel Rwanda was a great movie. Hard to believe that sorta thing happens. Best sequence I thought was the comment about how we see it on TV at dinner, say "too bad", then go back to dinner waiting for the next headline.

Hey there FlyingHighNow: Who's celebrating? Not me. It is always tragic that any kind of killing of humans occurs anywhere at any time and when it takes the form of genocide it is especially repugnant.

The report's aim was to measure the frequency and severity of wars. Given that the media and end-times religions milk tragedy, including wars, for all they're worth, and also imply it is getting worse, it is helpful to compare the current frequency and severity of wars with earlier decades to see if it is getting worse.

It could be compared with "road toll" statistics that measure the number of automobile deaths. These statistics are routinely collected by governmental agencies in many countries: For example, when a headline positively declares that there's been a significant decrease in the number of deaths reported in the last quarter compared with the previous quarter, that seemingly "good news" is extremely hard to hear when you're still coming to terms with a loved one who was killed in an automobile accident in the last quarter.

I agree that statistics don't capture the human pain and suffering, but nor do they pretend to do so. However, they remain helpful measures for a variety of purposes .

    Steve2,

I thought that your last post on this subject was right on the button.

You also handled very well those that were trying to change the subject (Talk about a mouth full of razor blades!)

It was just fortuitous for the WTS (and only for the WTS, mind - for those that might be trying to quote only part of what I am saying) that WWI broke out when it did:

    - They were able to then successfully camouflage the failure of their prediction of 1914 being the date for Armeggedon.

    - Instead, they were able to twist the facts around - and present it like they always predicted 1914 would see the beginning of the "last days."

While dubious about much of the content of the book "Thirty Years a Watchtower Slave", it was certainly correct about one thing - i.e. the WTS capitalised on the upheaval that WWI caused in Europe.

    Jack.

PS: The JWs always have an answer to everything. Unfortunately, it is usually the wrong one!
