An interesting article on the Nigerian email scammers, their culture and their mentality.

    'We Will Eat Your Dollars'

  • To the cyber scammers in Nigeria who trawl for victims on the Internet, Americans are easy targets. But one thief had second thoughts.

  • By Robyn Dixon, Times Staff Writer FESTAC, Nigeria — As patient as fishermen, the young men toil day and night, trawling for replies to the e-mails they shoot to strangers half a world away.

But the few who actually reply make this a tempting and lucrative business for the boys of Festac, a neighborhood of Lagos at the center of the cyber-scam universe. The targets are called maghas — scammer slang from a Yoruba word meaning fool, and refers to gullible white people.

    Maghas are avaricious and complicit.

magha has to send a series of escalating fees and payments. In a dating scam, for instance, the fraudsters send pictures taken from modeling websites.

Like nearly everyone here, he is desperate to escape the run-down, teeming streets, the grimy buildings, the broken refrigerators stacked outside, the strings of wet washing. It's the kind of place where plainclothes police prowl the streets extorting bribes, where mobs burn thieves to death for stealing a cellphone, and where some people paint "This House Is Not For Sale" in big letters on their homes, in case someone posing as the owner tries to put it on the market.

Kinda puts things in perspective....not to excuse them completely but a lot of these cyber-scammers live in areas that you and I would never want to spend a single day in.

I just can't understand how people can be so gullible to fall for this stuff.

I know a doctor who fell for a Nigerian oil deal scam - it was crazy.

lmao... and this is why I love to Scam Bait.

Their greed makes them stupid and easy to jerk around.

Those scammers are predators. Tired of preying on fellow citizens, they turn to the outside, looking for new prey. Their living conditions shows the end result of that kind of attitude.

I don't think that is quite fair, Satanus. Which came first, the predator or the poverty, the chicken or the egg? It is much easier to be generous when your belly is full.

The fastest way to end the predators AND the poverty is to help these third world countries build their basic infrastructure and services. When people are well-fed and content, they start to get tired of the civil strife and tell the bullies to go home.

Greed may be bad, but stupidity born from greed is worse. When you combine the two, as evidently some do, you have a recipe for an empty bank account. The scams are soooo transparent that I have trouble feeling sorry for anyone who is scammed. But then again, I should take care with my sympathies; the JW scam is pretty damn transparent to me now as well.

Actually, the two scams are similar.

Nigerian: Do what I tell you and $300 million will be in your bank account soon.

WTBTS: Do what we tell you and everlasting life + paradise earth will be yours any day now.

How about the people with marginal reading or comprehension abilities?
