I am so sick of witnesses reserving catchphrases for themselves.

Talking to my wifes mother today she kept referring to "the friends". "The friends came over today, we went to lunch with the friends". Well if they are "the friends", then what the hell are everyone else? What would you call a friend if they werent a witness? Or is it not possible to be a friend if you arent. And if only witnesses are friends, what is everyone else? An enemy?

Also calling their faith "the truth". I find it very annoying because that implies everything else is untrue.

So next time she comes over, I am going to make references to "the friends" when refering to my friends. When she says something im just going to say that they are my friends, so I can refer to them as the friends. They dont hold a copyright on that term.

Maybe I will talk about "the truth" in reference to my athiesm. I think this could be really fun.

Remind her that the Quakers call themselves "the Friends."

That is a hard phrase to ditch, "the truth." I usually call it "the Lie" now. In order to break a bad habit you must substitute a good one.

You know I always find it strange when people refer to the JW's as 'The Friends'. Its a term we just didn't use in Australia...

'The Truth' though is definately used... and abused.

    hey gg,

I think that's a super idea;) Although personally I think if they're yabbering drives you this nuts (and I can fully relate and understand that) then the best thing you can do for yourself is to get yourself away from it. Personally it makes me what to bash my head on a brick wall when I come into contact with typical dubspeak, just makes me want to slap the person to their sense. I do think though that it would rock their little worlds though to think that someone who once knew the "truth" could possibly see and feel as strongly about an alternative "truth". But don't let them get to you too much matey:) frog x

amen soledad. i think the word "imply" is a real understatement.

the first univ. i attended was a quaker school. guess what it was called? Friends University. It was like i couldnt get away from the friends!! LOL. tragic. anyone that is not a friend? well they are worldy folks, associates of the satanic ruler of this wicked system. its either friend or wicked agent provocateurs, making every attempt to seduce "the friends" into joining their life of sinful indulgence. and gringojj, im afraid there just is no in between.

Those terms serve as emotional triggers in language. Without actually saying it aloud, it identifies outsiders as the opposite of what JWs claim to be:

Basically, if JWs are The Friends™, then everyone else must be the enemies.

If JWs have The Truth™, then what everyone else believes is a big fat lie. If you leave The Truth™, you become an Apostate™.

If JWs are the Only True Christians™, then everyone else is a big fat hypocrite.

That's why I use the ™ symbol on JW buzzwords whenever possible - it shows how the language is loaded, and when jargon is being employed to hinder logical thought in the JW.

And how about refering to everyone as "brother johnson" or "sister smith"? Black people have been calling each other brother and sister for a long time regardless of religion thats not exclusive to dubs. I am going to start refering to all my friends as "brother and sister".

    Resplendent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
