Are there any former dubs who were petrified by the demons?

How did you get over these phobias?

Was there a Christian or bibilical based explanation that helped you to get over these phobias?

I'm not quite over "that" phobia yet.

I know in my mind that there are no demons but I still can't help being afraid

If anyone in our house starting fighting, had questions about "the truth", didn't want to go to a meeting or out in service, was caught kissing a boy, bascially ANYTHING deemed wrong or sinful, my mother would start to quiz everyone about what they had brought into the house. Everything used or given to us by someone else was immediately thrown in the garbage as it 'clearly was demonized'.

I grew up with a fear of demons and the power they had over us. I would have nightmares about my walls opening up and them coming through to get me.

I am over that fear entirely. Once I realized that fear is a necessary part of the JW religion, it started to leave on its own. I started watching scary movies as well to make 'evil' 'demons' more hollywoodish, less real and more entertaining. It worked for me.

I definitely had demonitis, everything could be demonized. I knew logically that everything wasn't, but on a whole other level I thought they just might be. Churches in particular, dens of demons!

I don't know where I stand on the idea of beings that exist that could be construed as ghosts. But I've yet to see a documented case of a person harmed by a ghost/demon/apparition/whatever. Until I do, I can't justify worrying about it.

If a person is a hard-core bible believer, I think they'd have every reason to be concerned about demons and possession.

This is kind of embarassing, but...I was still checking under my bed, well into my twenties. And I was afraid of the dark, and used to sleep with a little lamp on. The funny thing is, so did my mother, and she was just obsessed with the whole demon-thing, and spoke about the constantly. So, eventually I dealt with it. The thing is to challenge yourself, I figured that out on my own, and only later realised that that was actually how psychologists deal with phobias. I was afraid of the dark, hence, I had to start sleeping in the dark, no lamp anymore. At first, it was scary. Eventually, it got better. It`s like that with a lot of things. But still, when I catch myself thinking out loud, I think "oh no, what did I just say, the demons must have heard me". (Cause they can`t read minds, we were taught to believe, only the big J can do that). Cause they would "use" any information they got about us. It`s just ridicolous I still have a bit of that, after so many years. Well, my next project is to watch horror movies late at night, when I have the appartment to myself. And then go to sleep in a dark room. That`ll be fun. Nightynight.

    ME! ME! ME!

I can still remember when I was studying out of the live forever book on the chapter on demons. I could not sleep in my room alone for a whole week! And to think they could actually rape women????

I ended my masturbating for a whole month afraid that they'd be in the room with me wathching.

My husband was real big on the demon theory since he was raised by spiritistic parents. The whole JW/demon BS fit right in. We wouldn't accept anything from his parents or have pics of them because they could be possessed. He would get weird feelings about objects from yard sales and we would get rid of them. And of course, anything of any religious nature that wasn't JW oriented was infested with demons. Several months back he was having trouble sleeping at night and thought it was demons and asked me if I had any anti-JW books in our bedroom closet. I told him I thought there might be some in a bookbag somewhere. He asked me to get them out and said I didn't have to throw them away, but he wanted to take them outside the house to store them. WTF! I told him I had read them all and they had served their purpose so he could dispose of them.

I've recently sent of for religious material to be sent to my home so I could start doing some research. I'm sure this will bring up demon-possessed accusations. I think it is only fair that I can have the same concerns about WTS literature and ask him to not have them around too. Ya think?

Challenge yourself... interesting. I guess the trick to that is recognizing you have a phobia and not a legitimate fear. I don't think, "See, play with the OUIJA board! Nothing happens!!!" would go over very well.

I guess I have to do more research into the nature of this phobia.

AA, I am trying to keep a lower profile on the boards these days.
