It's really fun, and easy, you can play for free or buy in and lose all your money like I have. Anybody else play there?

    No it isn't.

There are events that we have less control over but anyone "gambling" their life is a fool IMO.

Anyone notice the explosion in gambling over the last year - maybe its a UK thing. There is a concerted effort by the industry to win over lots of new gamblers especially the poker stuff.

This is going to financially break an awful lot of people and families.

Yup ... the only way these big companies are going to grow and prosper is if people start gambling and losing more with impact on families.

... kind of like the warning about gambling when the national lottery started - it made gambling more mainstream and accepted.

Like alcohol, it's fine for most people who can use it properly in moderation ... there are those who cannot though.

Well, I would say that just about everything in life is a gamble. Just recently, Simon, you took a gamble on one job being more suited for you than the other. I was of course joshing about losing my money (like I have much anyway). There are free tables to play on, and they can be fun, if only to hone your skills. For a home-bound recluse like myself, I get some entertainment that way. But yeah, gambling away you month's grocery money is a pretty bad idea.

Nope, it's a U.S. thing to - with local and state governments feeling it's the "silver bullet" to fight poverty. As good paying "blue collar" jobs are leaving the U.S. (along with companies closing plants) politicians are scrambling for tax revenue, so they've re-written the city and state laws to allow casinos to be built. Local and city governments love it because there is a 65% tax on gambling revenue. But just like the state lottery was suppose to be bring in millions of dollars for Illinois schools (but didn't), local casinos do more harm then good for a few reasons. One, the vast majority of casino users are local people - not out of town tourists. Two, this takes money away from local businesses and three, there are LOTS of people who re an enable to spend every dime they have at the casinos.

It's too bad a fraction of this money isn't used to re-train people for today's jobs.

And Cyg, I don't mean this as any slam against you or anyone else who gambles online or at casinos. I have plenty of friends who can afford to gamble and do so in a responsible way. To them, it's just another form of entertainment. I'm just disspointed that so many politicians have blindly supported casinos without first studying the affects on the community.

I got to say.....Warren Buffet, one of the richest men said it best " gambling is a tax on the stupid "

I was stupid for a while.

I disagree. If I gambled on which job I took then I may just be sat at home jobless. As it is, I have only ever been out of work for a couple of months over most of my working life, mostly by design (ie. a contract finishing and deciding to have a break). The fact is that I don't get contracts by 'luck' ... I work hard, train myself in the latest technologies and then decide which one to go for based on a number of factors (money, travel, work interest, company reputation etc...) Only losers believe that everything in life is by chance and that they can't affect things ... in which case I would be sat at home with no qualifications or skills, moaning about how unlucky I'd been to never get the right breaks etc ... Have fun on the free tables but I think most proper gambling games rely on the gambling as part of the fun. ie. betting in poker is an intrinsic part of the game and if you remove the risk of loss it negates the gameplay completely.
