That's very scary, Dan! Glad you figured it out so quick and took steps to protect yourself.

When I get any emails purporting to be from PayPal needing update info. I close the email and use my own link to get to the site to check it out. I'm paranoid. LOL

    Good info Ingenuous!

Will anti-spyware programs catch the key-loggers and malware, or do I need a virus program too? I don't have any anti-virus software running on my machine. I know, I know...

I get at least one of those emails each week.

The thing is I don't have a paypal account. I always forward the emails to an email at paypal. Paypal always sends me an email back telling me that I should change my password. I guess paypal doesn't know I don't have an account with them either.

I have been getting some too and ignoring them. I think you can forward your bad emails to [email protected] or something like that. Ebay owns PayPal.

Yes, that scam has been going around. At least you caught it before you were really screwed.

I have never, ever been legitimately contacted by any company through email to "update account information". It just doesn't happen. And if the email looks the least bit suspect, close the email and go directly to the company's site in the way you normally would. If everything looks okay there, the email was most definately a scam.

I followed one of those once, then when prompted to enter my info, I put in words I can't use here.

I got one the other day that had the last four numbers of my credit card AND the expiration date.

That one scared me. I did the spoof@paypal thing and yes, it was a fake... but how did they get that info???

Man, I got some of those e-mails too, and the first one nearly got me. I was just about to put in my info when I noticed that the address bar changed and I got suspicious. Those bastards must be cleaning up on that scam. My parents, who are not up on too much technical stuff, called me when they got that e-mail for help on how to respond. They had no idea it was not for real. Whoever perpetrates that crap should be flogged in public.

    Dan,

    I recommend downloading

    AdAware, http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

It's free for personal use, and detects most spy-ware.

After that, if your still a little scared you may have some residual nastiness hanging around download and run, cleanup from Stephen Gould. http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/download.html.

    Then, go to symantec http://www.symantecstore.com/dr/sat1/ec_main.entry25?page=HHONAV2006pd&client=Symantec&sid=49997&CUR=840&DSP=&PGRP=0&ABCODE=&CACHE_ID=194919

and use your paypal account to but Norton Anti-Virus, its $40.

I know you feel silly for this happening, but really... thanks for sharing what happened. It's all too easy to forget that people are relentless in trying to steal from you sometimes. Thanks for the reminder.

I don't have antivirus on my computer either. I'm bad too! I do virus scans every week though by going here-

    http://housecall60.trendmicro.com/en/start_corp.asp

It does both spyware and viruses now.
