split enz was the first band i ever saw...when they were still wacky and got dressed up and stuff they played a gig in a glasgow university...i arranged to stay at a friends house and we sneaked out to see them..unfortunately we were underage so they wouldnt let us in the gig cos there was a bar there...unless we were on the bands guest list..so one of our group went in and spoke to the band who put us on the list..i didnt know too much of their stuff but i distinctly remember a spoon solo...a few years ago i went to oz on holiday and split enz had reformed and were playing with the oz philarmonic orchestra...they played all their old stuff... including the spoon solo..twas brill

I'm really huge into the Canadian indie music scene right now (Broken Social Scene, Metric, the Dears, Tegan & Sara, Feist, Hayden, P: Ano, Buck 65, New Pornographers, Stars, etc.), so all that is worthy of a thread by its own.

Well, in the '80s I liked Men at Work and INXS (yes, the old stuff...love that song "Original Sin"). I thought it was an embarassment to see that "Rock Star INXS" reality show, sorry to say. In the late '80s, bought two Midnight Oil albums and liked them a lot (haven't listened to them in a decade tho).

I'll be honest, I'm loving our Indie Harcore/Emo scene right now. But on the subject of Australian Music, not rock but, since my cousin visited from down under over the summer, I've been obsessing over John Butler Trio, I absolutely love everything I've heard from them so far.

Yep, John Butler Trio Rock, they've got a great folk thing going on. I'm real surprised they've made it to the UK:)

Yeah, Tik, I used to love Split Enz, too. I always wanted to see the Hoodoo Gurus, but every time they came through my area something stupid kept me from going. Are they still around as a band?

I forgot about the Hoodoo Guru's. Big fan.

Also forgot "brother" and Colin Hay from Men at Work's solo stuff is amazing.

Sadly the Gurus have called it a day but never fear theres lots more happening.

Yes, John Butler Trio are hot.

We can't claim to own Jeff Buckley though, as he was the son of Tim Buckley the god of vocal stretching.

    All U.S .

I like the song "treaty" by the band Yothu Yindi which has a mixture of Australians and Aboriginies

A bit of music history here, what caused some of our greatest bands to surface was in the past, I think it was about the 70's there was a huge competition on for bands and Australian artists to work on writing songs that really reflects the Australian Culture, there was this huge performance held I think at the Sydney opera house not sure, with all the Australian songs, at that time Australian Artists were very much encouraged.

I have been learning about Australian artists in music.

Anyone heard of Crowded house? I think thats a band with a mixture of Australian and New Zealanders. I am performing the song "private universe"

They haven't really, I think they had a small slot at Glastonbury, but I've only heard of them because of my cousin... (Although saying that, they did get a mention in a guitar mag last month)

Colin Hay, yeah, totally, I saw that episode of Scrubs he guest starred in, and I've been looking for his material ever since.
