Skype is software that allows you to make phonecalls from computer to computer anywhere in the world for free, via the internet.
I Skype and it is brilliant. With a set of headphones and a microphone it is better quality than a telephone. I made a 2 hour phone call to a very expensive Arabic country a couple of weeks ago. It would have cost $200 normally, and didnt cost a cent. Definitely worth using if you make long distance calls and the other person is connected to the internet.

That sounds great!! So does the person you are calling have to be logged onto the internet in order for you to reach them? Or can you call someone's home number?

The principle of Messenger, Yahoo and the free version of Skype are similar, though Skype is designed to look and feel more like a phone.
The free version of Skype only allows computer to computer calls.
If you buy Skype credit you can call from your computer to anyones phone, the charges are usually quite a lot cheaper than a normal phone call.
You can also get a phone number so a regular phone can call you, though it does mean you need to have your computer on and connected to the internet to receive calls. It costs 30 Euro per year, so is also cheaper than a normal phone line.
I have been told it uses about 4kb per second, so less than 1MB every 4 minutes, so even the cheapest 200mb broadband accounts will allow a large number of phone calls per month.
    The address is http://www.skype.com/
(I sound like a Skype sales rep)
