I'm really glad you posted this topic because two Mormon boys are calling on my husband, Clyde, right now. They have actually studied with him, and I sat in on one of their sessions. I agree the doctrine is nutty, but strangely I am intrigued by them. I like the fact that they are encouraged to get a college education. One of them plans to become a dentist. I also like the fact that they encourage people to lay aside food and supplies in the event of a disaster. Ever heard of the WT doing this?

Clyde and I have talked about how we would like to go to some church. We are a bit lonely because most of our "friends" were witnesses, and it's hard to develop new relationships after so many years. We've been invited to go, but probably won't. Two things holding me back are, 1) the chance that someone in the family will find out (my daughter and my father are still strong dubs), and 2) why would we want to exchange one high-control religion for another one? But, judging, from your comments, they are not as high-control as the WT.

Unless it has changed, they do encourage wives to stay home with their children and not work. Agnes

That's pre- 1980's... it's changed. I have several mormon friends - most of the adult women in the families work - ya gotta do what ya gotta do to get by nowdays.

I just wanted to make a point that they are very unlike JW's in some ways. There doctrines are every bit as unscriptural as the WTBS. We are members of an independent Christian church - it is not part of any larger group. I find it to be a refreshing change from the WT, we've been going there since we got out in 1989.

Witnesses are not happy. Period. I thought I was, but I was not really happy.

Ow can a 'Christian' be happy when he is denied a relationship with the 'Christ'.

    Happy Jehovah's witness = oxymoron.

Their lives are entirely different from what JW's go through. Mormons are encouraged to get educated, get good jobs, and be members of their communities. They don't do (or not do) so many things that set dubs apart. They celebrate holiday's, stand for the flag salute, vote, play sports etc.

I know a Mormon family and the comment above describes them to a tee. Outside of being Mormon, which some people consider cultish, they are an ideal family. But are they happier than JWs? Happier than some I know, but not as happy as other JWs that I know. They do seem more content in everyday life. They aren't living in fear or expectation of some cataclysmic event.

If I am not mistaken, don't Latter Day Saints keep a 2 year supply of food in their house in case of the End?

Mom studied with them before she became a JW. She stopped studying with them because she didn't agree on their explanation of why they practiced polygamy. Not long after, a JW knocked on our door!

The Mormons I have met are sweet people. One of my current co workers is LDS, very nice and very beautiful. She just got her doctorate from school.

So when did the dubs get happy?
