"No jury likes people that use religion to cover up for the fact that they were protecting child molesters," said Tim Kosnoff, the plaintiffs' lawyer. "It was clear they wanted to send a message to the Mormon church with this verdict."
Can't wait for the day that the name WATCHTOWER BIBLE TRACT SOCIETY/ JW'S replaces the word Morman church in above statement.
Looks like Tom got Fryed. LOL!!!

If only the victims who bring the WTS to court for letting the child abuser stay in good standing while they were disfellowshipped, will complete the trial and not except a payoff, that will be a good thing. It will open the eyes of the dubs. Some of them anyway.
This is a fantastic result; hopefully however an appeal wont arise

Of course we are appealing.
The law is very confusing - in the US - several states make it illegal for a minister to reveal to the police things told in confidence (LDS church has been sued over this as well) , things told in confidence don't make a church culpable - let me swing it another way.
I tell you that I've abused someone - should you be sued for not going to the police? The churches are taking a big hit because they are easy targets and people are greedy as hell - you have a litigation mad culture in the US that is sadly drifting over here.
The LDS church teaches against abuse as a sin and advocates going to the police where it is legal to do so over major misdemeanours - that should be enough - but what would you say a churches policy should be?
1/ Go to the police over every law broken by every member or public person etc.. that confesses to ANY member of said congregation who holds any position within that church even though it is a non-paid voluntary job.
2/ Don't treat the church as a whipping boy when perverts get away with crimes.
Now while I have sympathy for those who have gone through this ordeal it is not right for them to start blaming every official organisation that the criminal has any dealings with. Where shall we stop - let's claim if needs be that we confessed to the local school, a college, the Mcdonalds store owner, the corner shop owner - they all have money and as we know money is the answer to past abuse. Sorry - I think this case will get overturned if your legal system has any hope at all.
Once you make the churches culpable for confessions you better start watching your backs because it won't be long before you start being sued over any confessions given to you by any of your friends that you didn't dash to the police and inform on.

I could'nt care less. Mandatory reporting of child rape should be the norm everywhere. As a state law. If churches have a contrary policy, I don't CARE!!! Protecting children means more than the reputation of a church or a member.
It's your kind of attitude, Qcmbr, that has allowed the cover ups to happen for centuries in various religions.
All that is needed for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing Edmund Burke
Avishai - you just crossed a boundary. Don't.
My attitude does not cover up sex abuse be very careful.

Qcmbr's statements aside........this is a wonderful piece of news and hopefully justice for the victims from these "hide-behind-the -apron" religions that further victimize these by their selfish actions.....will be forced to face the facts that people are fed up with this nonsense.
BRAVO!!!!!!!
