"Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated [us] into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, [even] the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist." (Colossians 1:12-17)

Know thou that every fixed star hath its own planets, and every planet its own creatures, whose number no man can compute.

    (Baha'u'llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, p. 162)

Creatures are to be Found on Every Planet

"Regarding the passage on p. 162 of the 'Gleanings'; the creatures which Bahá'u'lláh states to be found in every planet cannot be considered to be necessarily similar or different from human beings on this earth. Bahá'u'lláh does not specifically state whether such creatures are like or unlike us. He simply refers to the fact that there are creatures in every planet. It remains for science to discover one day the exact nature of these creatures."

(Compilations, Lights of Guidance, p. 478)

As you rightly state, Baha'u'll'ah affirms that every fixed star has its planets, and every planet its own creatures. The House of Justice states however, that it has not discovered anything in the Bahá'í Writings which would indicate the degree of progress such creatures may have attained. Obviously, as creatures of earth have managed to construct space probes and send them into outer space, it can be believed that creatures on other planets may have succeeded in doing likewise.

Would life on other planets pretty much destroy much of Earth's religious myths?

I would say no, mainly people on earth want sometype of religious belief system. It would take some hard physical evidence to convince people to believe differently. To me our physical bodies are not ment for space travel, our spiritual being is to figure out what path we selected.

It's interesting you mention that movie Contact in that movie Jodi Foster's character, her physical body did not leave the earth but her mind took her to a different universe. Maybe thats what we as human beings need to achive without mind-alternating drugs and alcohol.

I did a (extremely unauthoritative) paper on Coyote myths of the southwest, and my impression was that the nature of the activities or aetiologies for which Coyote was deployed changed over time to reflect the increasing presense of the white man. That is to say, simple aetiologies like how life began, how the sun came to being, how men and women are different, do not make reference to the white man. The myths that do have some discernable mercantile or exchange activity. This would suggest to me that human myths would hardly be destroyed by the demonstration and visitation of alien life: they would alter rapidly in a race to find the best way of accounting for these advanced newcomers.

It dawned on me the other day: what if in solar systems and galaxies there are all kinds of planets with intelligent life on them? What if we were all banished to be out here on this wacko, wicked planet as some punishment for not behaving?

What if earth is just some Six Flags/DisneyLand where people from other planets go to amuse themselves? Like being born into this human form and living out this life on earth is really just some amusement ride we chose to get on. And the catch is that we don't recall why we are here.

It's just a bizarre thought. My last bizarre thought along that line is that the Mormons really do die and become gods of their own earths and this is why our planet is so messed up.

These are just brainstorms I get when too many bad things happen in my life at one time. Not really serious, but it is taught in Eastern religions that life as we perceive it is but an illusion.

This is my take on it. Might sound crazy, but I do believe that life is elsewhere in the universe. I believe that "aliens" are demons. Crazy?

About 10 years ago my brother-in-law, an elder, said there were definitely no planets outside our solar system, the bible proved it. The sovereignty issue, etc. Literally a few weeks later they discovered the first planets in other solar systems. Did he stop believing the bible? Of course not. Cognitive dissonance made sure of that. He conveniently forgot he had ever thought it was an issue and came up with a new explaination.
ET, doesn't matter. JW's will say how that proves how important humans and the ransom are, since the ET's are so unimportant to God that he couldn't be bothered even mentioning them in the bible. JW's are the test case for the entire universe, "join quick in this monumental occasion before Armageddon kills everyone else, just leaving ET's and JW's"!!!

i think a lot of people - especially JWs - would have to reconsider their faith and most probably lose it. because all their belief-system is centered around one god, one creation, one first human couple, one plan... not much space for aliens there.

then there would be those who'd say "thei're demons! they are just testing our faith". those folks would never change their mind anyway.

then there would be the evangelists who would be the first at the UFO and tell our visitors they'd be saved too! would be a problem though if their bodies are water-intolerant.

then of course there would be the new old myths. like the pyramids have been built by alien space invaders and god was actually an UFO and jesus lives in the pleyades.

depending on where the UFO lands first some might even pray to the aliens.

if there's extraterrestrian life and they have plans to visit us i sure hope they wouldn't land in bible-land.
